Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

My choice for "best female lead" in this generally went to whoever happened to be present at the time. I know I've said it before but they did a great job with the characterization of everyone in this.

So I mentioned previously about the BGM that plays right after that first confrontation between Sephiroth and Cloud. When I first heard it, I thought it sounded familiar, so I tried searching for the title of that track, which I only discovered once the full OST was out. To my surprise, it was actually a remix of this track from Advent Children.

The devs put that particular track at that point of this game for a reason (and there are no other AC tracks in this game AFAIK), and the prevailing theory I alluded to earlier springs from that.

Another reason why "The Promised Land" shows up in Remake is because Advent Children makes it the de facto Lifestream theme and Remake doubles down on that by very pointedly calling its version "The Promised Land - Cycle of Souls", so it very pointed has the theme show up after a fuckton of people have just died after Reactor 1 went kablooey, ie: returned to the Lifestream.

Also yes, it shows up in Advent Children over a montage of Marlene explaining to the audience about what huge rear end in a top hat Sephiroth was in the original Final Fantasy VII.

Hot take o'clock: I really can't stand Aerith's English voice!

I know the VA pretty much sounds like that IRL and seems like a nice youtuber who was super enthusiastic about the part, but she just sounds like generic cloying high pitched unnatural anime little girl and it really grates on me. The mocap being very cutesy anime pose is also not helping.

We're pretty early on here so there's not much to go off, but I seem to be the only one who doesn't think she was a good fit, and I wonder what I'm missing. I think Jessie's voice would fit her better?

But there's also the battle between the confident badass "Are you done?" Aeris of the OG that I remember and am probably overcorrecting for the submissive "staff chick" stereotype the EU made her into. The truth is probably in the middle.

Update 11 - Filler

Previous Bonus Next

Ahoooooooooooooooooooooooo

AhooooooooOOoOooo

They're out to get you
There's Shinra closing in on every side

They will auto-attack you
Unless you run away from the combat

Now is the time
For you and I to skip close quarters together

All through the night
I'll save you from the padding on the screen
I'll make you skip

'Cause this is filler
Filler fight

And no menu can save you
While the enemy's about to strike

You know it's filler
Filler fight
You're fighting for your playtime
Inside a killer filler tonight, yeah

'Cause this is filler
Filler fight
Game, I can pad you more
Than any gacha would ever dare try

So let me hold [Share] tight
And save a killer, filler
Video of this fight

Stretching falls across content
The Third Chapter hour is close at hand
Shinras crawl in search of Cloud
To terrorize y'all's first playthrough

And whomsoever shall be found
Without a save to skip it all
Must stand and face the hours of hell
And sort-of-empathize with Cybershell

The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of 40 Monster Drinks

And tanky grunts in red costume
Are coming in to seal your doom

And though you fight to stay awake
Your body starts to sleep
For no mere mortal can resist
The ennui of the filler!

Alright, so this is a long sequence. I mean, it can be short, but the first time I went through this gauntlet I went through every single corner, opened every box, fought every grunt aaand... well that can take quite a while. There's a lot to unpack here.

So at the end you fight that red guy, the Huntsman, which is sort of a mini-boss. The first time I engaged him I had some trouble - the Riot Troopers and him all wear shields, and if you hit the shield you get stunned. You can either wait for an opening, or, as I learned in my second playthrough, just spam Fire. The Riot Troops die to a single Fire.

I think now's a good time to reminisce this sequence in the original

Good stuff.

Anyway, the first time I played through this I uhh forgot to hit the Record button. Because I'm dumb. So that's why I went through it again. It's long but as I imagined not super long if you're speedrunning. It's obvious padding but I'm fine with it, everything looks so neat and -

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhh.

So uh. Uhhm. What was that?

I mean, that's sort of rhetorical, but I'm assuming that guard knew Cloud, and I'm assuming that it was the other guard who accompanied him during the Nifelheim Reactor mission.

I wonder if we'll see more of him. Also, goddamn at how detailed everything in this game is.

Oh, and before I forget.

I mean, how long was Cloud a Shinra trooper? Makes sense that if you run through enough of them, you'd find one or two that knew him.

It's a little unclear in English (both Dub and Sub), but in Japanese the guard says "Oi, sono ken wa", meaning "Hey, that sword". The implication here seems to be that the guard recognizes the Buster Sword, and presumably he was saying "Hey, I know that sword. Isn't that NOPENOPEYOUHEARDNOTHINGISTHATMYTRAINGOTTAGO."

OK, that scene where the jeep cuts you off and starts the fight with the Huntsman.

That is the first time in this game the classic Final Fantasy VII battle music plays.

This entire sequence has a tense, low-key version of it playing in the background, and it's just slowly building up. Then, the instant you get control of Cloud after the jeep cutscene, the battle music kicks into high gear, and in the words of a close friend of mine, it sounds like the original felt.

Final Fantasy VII Remake: Let The Battles Begin!

Regardless of whether this sequence is just filler or padding, or whatever you want to call it--that moment was goddamn powerful for me, to the point I had to pause the game and curl up on my couch for a couple minutes because I couldn't stop shaking and crying. Hell, listening to the battle music two months later still gives me goosebumps.

Most of what I know about the original game is through osmosis--listening to other people talk about it, hearing the music through filesharing and YouTube, reading Elentor's original LP. I couldn't play the original game. I just bounced off of it, disappointed that I couldn't bring myself to enjoy it because I have a difficult time with old-school JRPGs. As a result I have more nostalgia for what my imagination told me FFVII was than the actual game itself... nostalgia for the concept of FFVII, which has been built up in my head for the last 20 years.

When the battle music hit its crescendo here, I couldn't hold it back any more, and I wept.

I know things are different, and everybody has their quibbles with the presentation and the battle system and whatever else. None of that really matters to me.

After 20 years, I finally get to experience Final Fantasy VII.

Buckle the gently caress up.

Chapter 2 is one of my favorites in this game as well, due to that whole sequence of fights with the accompanying music after Aerith runs off. The way the music builds and almost but not quite hits the same notes like the original battle theme during the battle with the first group of troopers, then settles into a more restrained remix between battles that keeps the tension simmering.

The way it starts building again during the battles at the fountain, then finally crests into the original battle theme during the last fight with the Huntsman, :discourse:

I always figured the trooper guy was recognizing the Buster Sword from when Angeal and Zack wielded it more than anything about Cloud specifically, and Cloud’s brain problems kicked in right before the dude could go “the gently caress are you doing with Zack’s sword?”
