My count:

Skirmisher: 6
Reaper: 10
Templar: 10

I'll break the tie with a Templar vote.

Skirmisher abilities aren't that useful in the early game, and the hookshot is not very impressive when you get to the later armor abilities. He's in the B-team, while Reaper is just designed to break the stealth game. A unit that can rush full speed forward and provide vision with very slim chance of getting caught? Yes please. Oh and also deploy a hell bomb from hell that can just win missions.

I think the Templar is the most interesting piece on the battlefield. Unlike any other piece you'll want them out there to take a couple of shots. Positioning is everything in this game, and having a Templar in just the right square is some of the most satisfying tactics I've done in this game.

I'll be interested to see what becomes of this because I never bought War of the Chosen - all the stuff it adds that sounds interesting to me is heavily outweighed by everything it adds that makes me scream gently caress no. I thought X-COM 2 in general was a huge disappointment, so maybe this LP will change my mind.

If you didn't like XCOM2, WotC won't blow your mind. It's the same thing with additional anime villains and more crazy guns.

Edit: the photo mode and the mission posters are a goddamn genius addition though, and are alone worth the price of admission.

LOL that advent guy going full stormtrooper was peak XCOM.

What an awful map, you hate to see that especially in the early game where you can't afford losing mission objectives or soldiers. And that flank move that turned out to not flank was really weird. I would 100% have made the same move without checking it, that's a textbook corner flanking position that I think should have just worked. I think you're correct that the problem has to be that ladder being there, those things are mega strange even for this game.

Good job surviving the funlancer ambush, I might have dealt with that one with an alt-F4. I don't usually get angry at video games, but this one is just angry at the player sometimes.

Sharpshooters got hit with a nerf hammer real bad after XCOM 1, where they were the best class by far. Here they are unimpressive in the early game, where they get stuck on some roof taking ~60% potshots at enemies they're lucky enough to see. Later they are capable of incredible burst damage, but it tends to be kinda situational when what you want is consistency. The pistol side is more consistent, but then you're spending a lot of resources developing pistols that nobody else really wants to use.

The Specialist Aid Protocol move is actually very very strong. On the tin it just gives 20 defense, which means that enemies get -20% hit chance. Doesn't sound that exciting. However, the enemy AI really hates taking low chance shots. The actual protection you get from Aid Protocol is that the enemies will choose to shoot somebody else instead. What you really want from a Specialist though, is for somebody to become a very good hacker. Getting there is very RNG based, but the dividends are fantastic.

Slightly related question - XCom:Chimera Squad is half off until May 1st on Steam ($10 instead of $20). Is the gameplay traditional XCom, or is this some other genre in the XCom universe? Trying to avoid spoilers.

From what I've seen and heard, it's the same engine and same squad based tactics. A more linear story and character based take on XCOM, with a set squad.

It's counterintuitive, but in timed missions I tend to use sharpshooters as the point soldier before contact is made. (If a reaper isn't available.) The rationale is that when you make a blue scouting move with any unit, the followup is likely going to be a another reactionary move anyway. Either you see nothing, and push forward to a hard cover likely to be a good position, or you see or trigger something and fall back a bit into a good position. When the sharpshooter is doing the scouting, the fact that a blue move removes most of their combat effectiveness is minimized. The natural scouting moves tend to be good moves for finding a position for the sharpshooter as well.

I've once seen a Psi Zombie 1-shot a 4 HP rookie, but they are so easy to avoid I don't even know if they can crit. If they can, I could see that hurting quite a lot indeed.

The Lost appearing in every other mission might get old quickly, but their animation for jumping down from a roof never does.

Hunker Down is a strong move that protects from a lot of stuff, which the game in true XCOM fashion never explains to the player. There isn't a lot of counterplay against the Assassin, but spreading out enough to avoid the AOE abilities, getting as much line of sight around as possible, and just hunkering down often works. She will end up in an obvious hiding spot, or right in the middle of your squad as happened in this mission. It's still awful to see her when you can't call down an extraction point and bail.

Yeah, sharpshooters are real bad at their job in the early game. That's why I play them as scouts and poor riflemen/pistoliers before they get the grappling hook armor and at least the Lieutenant level ability. Death From Above, which gives them extra actions if they kill an enemy from an elevated position.

That wall shown in the propaganda poster will surely strike terror in the hearts of the alien force.
