I'm still not sure there being two evil fox ladies is supposed to be a twist (to the cast at least) or something we are just sort of expected to understand as a given.

Good enough ending. In hindsight it kind of makes sense I suppose that all of the game aspects as a story reveal would be downplayed as this adaption just wasn't really interested in using it as a central pillar at any point so it can instead more or less just stand on its own, but it does leave a few character arcs and story beats as sort of just unexplored/glossed over.
