I plan to live forever, of course, but barring that I'd settle for a couple thousand years. Even 500 would be pretty nice.
I suspect if we really wanted to get an understanding of people's political alignments it would be better to know what orgs they affiliate with, what work have they done, than their online opinions.

What's the point of calling yourself a socialist if you're not contributing to the cause of socialism?

E: this isn't about grandstanding, it's a deeper philosophical problem.

Another centrist Marxist. Basically I want to replace capitalism with a democratically planned economy but I wouldn't say I know enough theory or have enough practice to have a set opinion of how best to get there. I'm open to ML or demsoc or anarchist positions.

Other ones in the 90s are Orthodox Marxism, Left-Wing Nationalism, Council Communism, and Eco-Marxism.

I have participated in the DSA and volunteered+donated to the Bernie campaign.

Quiz's like this are so dependant on definitons:

"It is necessary to establish a dictatorship of the proletariat as a transitionary stage between capitalism and socialism."

If this is the leninist line then gently caress right off with that poo poo,

... but if it''s Kerensky style worker co-ops and enhanced democratic control of the means of production it is a very different question.

Certainly there is a lot of disagreement about what a DOTP is supposed to be. Marx and Engels themselves used the Paris Commune as an example of a DOTP. The commune was a democratic workers' state.

The USSR was... not quite that. There was democratic management of workplaces in Lenin and Stalin's time - workers could vote to remove their bosses for instance. However, the larger governmental structure was built around the idea that the common people lacked class consciousness and needed a vanguard party to lead them and indoctrinate class consciousness into them before they could have democratic control of the state.

Regardless of what people think of Stalin's intentions, this idea failed in the USSR, as Khrushchev and later on had no real intent in ceding power to the workers, even crushing an attempt at doing so in Czechoslovakia, and workers became disengaged from the political process leading to eventual uprising and collapse of the USSR.

Certainly MLs could point to different examples, maybe Cuba or Burkino Faso under Sankara. But the ML paradigm is not without criticism. That being said, the democratic socialism model is not without criticism either, it keeps getting overthrown by foreign and bourgeoise powers as was the case with Allende and Evo and maybe eventually Maduro.

Does the average worker lack class consciousness today, particularly in America? Yes. Is the revolutionary vanguard party model the best way to unite workers in this country? Probably not.
