Hello thread, popping in for a super newbie question:

Am playing AoE2 finally, despite hearing/knowing a lot about it and being pretty experienced in RTSs. Did the Scottish tutorial campaign, started Joan of Arc and my eyes are rolling out of my head from mission 3/4 where you start without a base, again. Fired up another, el Cid, started without a base (but that's fine it's mission1), 1st attempted bugged out and got attacked by the allied castle (?) in the first few seconds, second attempt wandered around the map with the army for an eternity until I finally found the caste I was supposed to attack, halfway through all my units getting mulched the event fires that gives me workers which I was supposed to have been building a base with this entire time -_-

Right, sick of that poo poo. Which campaigns have the least amount of loving-around-with-no-bases? It's a really common sin from decades ago, and I have absolutely no patience for it anymore, its not why I'm playing RTSs.

I don't think there's any campaign with more than two scenarios where you don't get a base. If you are enraged by introductory segments where you beat up a small enemy army and take over their starting resources and/or get gifted a their town, this is not the game for you.

Yeah most campaigns have at least 1 or 2 segments without basebuilding, sometimes a whole mission.

New SP-focused expansion has 19 fully voice acted missions with a new expanded OST. Some of these seem to be pretty different from what we've got already: the Oda Nobunaga one allows you to play as 6 different factions, for instance.

There being a 1453 mission for both Constantine and Mehmed looks fun

They also teased Poland-Lithuania and Denmark coming to AoE3 in late 2024. The P-L Confederation was always highly requested, but Denmark was a bit unexpected. I wanted Persia!

The siege missions are actually really loving fun. Well some are. But the good ones are tight and this might be the most famous siege ever

On a darker note, I guess seasonal events are done now though

The fact that it's specifically Temujin (as opposed to Genghis) suggests to me that this could be following his defeat at the hands of former friend Jamukha, at Dalan Baljut. I think currently most historians agree that he had to flee to Jin territory, where he fought for them and eventually re-entered Mongolia with a second wind where he crushed Jamukha at Chakirmaut. This was also the background with Kuchlug, who you kill in the second Genghis mission after he's fled to the Qara Khitai empire following this battle. They may not cover all of this but there's a lot to work with here, especially the melodrama with Temujin's family and allies.

Also, some more stuff on Age of Mythology Retold, not much unfortunately, just showing some of the unit models.

Judging from the description, Retold is only remaking the OG + The Titans, not Tale of the Dragon.

The first is to be born in Joseon.
Age of Mythology screenshots are looking great. Was always my favorite so I'm pleasantly surprised. Considering we already know the gameplay it's the visuals that were more of a concern.

Disappointed by the AoE3 news though. I thought for sure we'd get something non-Western. Persia, Joseon, Siam are all sorry omissions right now and calling for inclusion more than yet more European civs. I was modestly surprised it got a new expac at all though; I guess the euro ones are probably easier to produce considering they can reuse more assets so I wonder if that factors in.

They didn't phrase it clearly (their announcements have always been so mealy-mouthed), but all scenarios in this DLC are by the designer Filthydelphia. 14 of them are updates of his existing Mod Workshop scenarios, 5 are fully new.

The Temujin scenario most certainly is an update of his Rise of Genghis Khan. It's a somewhat abstract representation of his beginning.

Yeah I think it's the fact that the setting would mostly appeal to Europeans + you can just reuse assets. I do still want to see Korea and Persia at some point, but the way they announced this like half a year in advance leads me to believe we could be years away from that, if at all.

We'll see how a campaign only DLC for AOE2 does I suppose, looking at steam I think most people are upset at the prospect of paying €12.99 for this, which is more than the entire base game right now.

Personally, the choices intrigue me, there's a lot of Vikings campaigns, four in total, which sort of implies to me that we won't be seeing a continuous five or six mission campaign for them in the future. There's also two more for Japan, together with Kyoto and Kurikara that makes four, all of these campaigns are purely Japanese vs other Japanese. Kind of an odd way to do things, its also interesting that there are zero new missions for Koreans and Chinese despite them famously having a lack of campaign content in AOE2. I sort of feel that might imply an East Asian DLC might be in the works that gives them fully fledged major campaigns of five or six missions, with the Japanese probably also being given a miss since they have a fair amount of content now? Certainly I'd say that would line up with a DLC to flesh out East Asia some more and perhaps also introduce the Jurchen and Tibetans.

An interview with one of the lead devs previously confirmed Tale of the Dragon, but then the Steam description lacked any mention of it. It's yet to be confirmed whether they've simply changed their mind on including it, whether he was mistaken/wrong/etc, or if they're simply not ready to talk about it yet.

I have three regrets
The first is to be born in Joseon.
Reading Postmortems from Game Developers which is interesting in its own right, but has a couple of articles on AoE1 and 2 by Matt Pritchard (senior dev of both the o.g. games and the definitive editions).

Bunch of interesting stuff but i found this particularly interesting, about AoE1's art:

quote:

The objects in the game were created as 3D models that had anywhere from a couple thousand to 100,000 polygons. The models were then textured, animated, and rendered out to a .FLC (Autodesk Animator) file with a fixed 256-color palette. So far, the process I’ve described is identical to that of many other games. At this point, however, the artists added another time-consuming step. The .FLC files were handed off to a 2D specialist, who took the animation apart frame by frame and “cleaned up” each image with Photoshop. The clean-up process involved sharpening detail and smoothing the edges of the irregular shapes. Since most of the sprites in AOE had screen dimensions of only 20 to 100 pixels in each direction, the visual quality improvement that we realized was significant. When AOE was shown at the 1997 E3, the artists received numerous compliments on their work from their peers at other companies.

quote:

The 256-color palette (actually 236) used in AOE was something of a problem. The palette was chosen and set in stone at the very beginning of the project, before most of the models and textures had been created. As a result, it turned out that some portions of the color spectrum, such as browns for wood textures, had too few available colors to get the best visual quality. The palette wasn’t revised during the development process because that would have required rerendering and touching up every image in the game—far too expensive time-wise. On the other hand, the palette did have a wide and balanced range of colors, which contributed to the overall bright and cheerful look of the game’s graphics.

I've always felt AoE1's art was a head above its peers so it's interesting. I think the lack of browns if anything helped out.

It's interesting because in my now obliterated memory AOE1 was vibrantly green but obviously there has to be a bunch of brown in there right? Muddy fields, river banks, forests, boats, the age 1 and 2 buildings. But no, actually going back and looking at it everything is kind of slightly off from the building material wooden brown you'd expect. Super neat.
