One thing that the first got perfectly was the battle banter. There's just so much personality coming from it and it doubles as non-visual information. E.g. when Seven goes "Ha, you missed" you know your dodge-tank is dodge-tanking.

Then a future sight goes off, you break it and the future is OURS to decide :black101:.

X is an underbaked mess with what I think are great ideas with potential but, you know, the game is almost literally unfinished. Not Chair Zone Xenogears unfinished but close. Charactirization is also kinda hard with a western-style nameless protagonist.

2 is mechanically the soundest game but the gacha system utterly breaks characterization. There's no point in having too many calls and answers if there's a one-third chance at any given time that Rex has Pyra out instead of a generic.

I don’t particularly like using Riki, I get that his gimmick is to do continuous damage with Burn/Freeze/Poison all at once but eh he can kinda fill a bunch of roles but doesn’t seem to excel at any of them.

On the other hand, tagging a boss with one of his DoTs as fifth attack in a chain means said boss loses half their life in a few seconds.

And as he's a big Heropon, he can actually tank the resulting aggro until an actual tank grabs aggro back you build another chain attack for the other half of the life total.

Maybe this will be the playthrough where I finally figure out chain attacks, because I’ve always found them too confusing. Same with XCX, I know there are some infinite overdrive builds but I just wasn’t able to do it.

Chain attacks in XC2 were simpler though and hitting max damage made you feel like the biggest badass so it was good.

XB1 chains:

_You get the first three attacks for free, then the primary way to extend the chain is high affinity between current party members. there are other modifiers I'm forgetting about but whatever. The maximum chain length is 15.
_Party members cannot die during the chain (spike damage is still a thing, but it won't bring people below 1 HP).
_All arts have a color. Using arts of the same color in direct succession massively increases their effect. This caps at 5 and resets if you switch color.
_Talent arts (the bigger one in the middle) are a jolly. They count as all colors for the boost I just described, and they allow switching colors mid-chain without dropping the boost.
_Killing an enemy mid-chain refunds half a bar. Extremely relevant against any boss with summoned adds.

I think mechanically XB2 is the best one, as long as you ignore the gacha (I do concede that's an hell of an asterisk though). Special shout-out to the nameless battle commentator.

1 has the best story, presentation and characterization and gently caress they needed to carry over the future vision mechanic in all other games because it was simply perfect. I was all excited when Mythra first came out because she has future vision too, but it turns into a boring 30% accuracy/evasion aura. OP as hell, but it's not :black101:the future is OURS to decide:black101:
I hope we get a battle commentator in 1DE though.

X has an unfinished story and the skell system needed a lot more time in the oven. Still, I did get a WiiU for it (and because it's also a Wii) and I don't regret it.

E: oh right, -spike damage is a blue colour gem ability in 1. Refine two level 4(or 5, it's been far too long) gems per character for 100% spike reduction when you can.

At that plot point, you should still have a fixed party of Shulk, Reyn and Sharla IIRC. I'll be honest, I think that's kinda an underpowered party, because that last member is underpowered in my opinion.

I must have missed it in the tutorial - what exactly is the purpose of getting a quality (?) above 100% when making a gem? I made a few rank 1 gems of varying quality yesterday but their effect was all the same.

Each gem rank has a range for the effect. At 100% quality, you get a gem with the minimum effect for its rank. Going up in quality you proportionally increase the effect, up to the maximum for the rank at 200%. Not so coincidentally, maximum effect for a given rank is equal to the minimum effect for next rank, so the game ranks up the gem mostly as a reminder.

Between 200% and 299%, nothing happens. At 300%, you instead get two ranked-up gems.

I'd say your gems were too close in quality to have noticeable differences in their effects.

Could someone give me a better explanation what I should be doing when Shulk gets his future visions? I get the idea that you should warn a character, or put up a shield, but sometimes it happens right after I use up a Monado action and the cooldown won't end before the enemy attack happens. It makes me feel like I'm playing wrong.

Deified Data posted:

I've just been saving shield for those moments personally.

A better question is what do you do if you're not controlling Shulk? Just hope you're near getting a chain?

You can:

a) use any of your controlled character's arts to avert the future.
b) go next to a party member and spend a single chain gauge to use ANY of their arts, outside standard cooldown timers.
c) blow the enemy up before the attack goes off. When a future tag is active, the enemy responsible for the attack takes more damage from arts of a different kind than the one depicted (I don't remember exactly the details)

While Shulk is going to be the future averter specialist (the Monado is kinda built for that) until midgame, be creative. Examples:

_Break -> topple delays the tag and forces a re-roll on the accuracy RNG; so if a dodge-tank gets targeted it's usually enough to turn the attack into a miss.

_Progressing further into daze clears the attack and forces the enemy to pick a new one at random when they recover, with a fresh timer. The future tag stays active.

_Just heal the afflicted character out of kill range.

_Tell your slacker tank to taunt and face-tank the attack. In general, aggro manipulation can force re-targeting.

Keep in mind that a future tag utterly cripples the enemy under prediction. They can't do ANYTHING until the tag fully clears, and they take conditionally more damage from your arts.
It's why adds are even more devastating than normal in this game. If an add triggers a future tag, the boss is free to wail on the party with impunity.

That's a decent idea. Basically make her overheat usable during a chain (and not a pure drawback) and we're good. Sharla main problem is that she's a full time support that can't actually do support during chain attacks.

As an example, part of what makes Melia good is that her main offensive option is her talent art and you can charge it up beforehand, so during chain attacks she can stack and keep the multiplier going across multiple art colors.

Does this game get some broken damage into HP items like XBC2 had that makes her redundant or do the other characters get better heals at higher levels?

You have so much passive healing Sharla quickly becomes redundant, and her cooldowns are way too long.
In addition, she's a liability during chain attacks; she doesn't have a talent art; revives are cheap and plentiful, especially any team with Dunban, Riki and/or Seven; a lot of characters have some off-healing, hell Riki is almost a good an healer as Sharla because his 1 (one) healing art has a reasonable cooldown and it's AoE.

When you can carry 8 arts in battle, 5 of them being dedicated healing is at least three too much. Especially when you don't have the ninth art everyone else has. It's the reason healer blades in 2 do their thing by having most their moves spawn healing bottles in addition to "gently caress the enemy" effects. Sharla has very little "gently caress the enemy" effects, and they're in mostly the wrong colors.

Her good thing is that she can cleanse and proactively prevent debuffs. That's it.

E: some unrelated random thoughts, involving some endgame spoilers, probably without answers: why does the Monado have the safety measure preventing it to cut Homs, High Entia and I presume Nopons? Was it something by Zanza to manipulate Shulk down the line or was it something by the High Entia to try and kneecap Zanza?
Also the Monado worked fine against Telethia before the unlock, so are High Entia protected because by the time of the game basically every one of them is half-homs? Or does the safety measure check for self-awareness?

Agility gems up to +50 for the dodge tank, strength or ether for the others. Hybrids attackers should probably get ether gems.
Skip anything with damaging spikes until you have some appropriate gems of that type. I'd wait until Seven for those though.

The mythical part where Sharla isn't needed starts when Dunban joins. Riki later on helps a lot because his healing art is almost as good as Sharla's whole healing toolkit, but you can make even a negligible healing party like Dunban, Reyn, Melia work.

a) Even a couple levels are a massive difference. If you have some exp banked in expert mode try using up some and see if anything changes. Make sure you're up to date on all the art manuals from the merchants so you can level them up if needed.
b) Don't sit on chain attacks. They're the bulk of your offense. As a reminder, killing an enemy during a chain attack restores a bar. It's how the party can vaporize big groups.
c) Outside of when you're forced (some plot battles against face mechons), don't bother with break/topple/daze during chain attacks. Spam same color arts (red) to build up the multiplier, that thing is exponential.
d) Skill link all the passive healing you can spread around.

I still want to know how Dunban got to Sword Valley without visiting Makna forest. Did he fly using things that the Mechon blew up when they attacked? Or did he go...via the front of the Bionis rather than the back? I guess we've not seen the front or the other leg.

Game starts in Colony 9 and we visit Colony 6.
One would assume there are (or were) Colonies 1 to 8 and an Homs main settlement somewhere.

If I kill a unique before getting all party members do I have to go back and kill them later to get new members that Affinity Coin?

I just checked, in my current file all party members have about the same amount of affinity coins (with a variation of 1 or 2 to account for maximum level reached). It's surprisingly good on this.
