I know Amazon likes to throw around buttloads of cash in hopes of replicating its success with Amazon Web Services, but I really don't think this will go anywhere, and will fizzle out sooner rather than later. RIP OP's job.

cargo cult is overused, but man, does it feel like a good way to describe this current phase of battle royale/esport fps rush.

I'm sure Vino worked hard af on this, as did all of the devs, but sure feels like Amazon is going through the motions on this one.

Hey folks. Lots of negativity in this thread. Goons are a tough crowd. I'll say a few things.

1. Amazon is committed to the long-term success of this game. We're looking for a community of people that enjoy the game. We've been seeing that the longer people spend with the game the higher they rate it and report they enjoy it, and we've been seeing people falling in love it with and coming back to play a lot. I can't say whether the execs are happy but from what I've personally seen a lot of people have found and enjoy it, and as long as people enjoy it, I'm happy.

2. Our marketing strategy is different from Apex. They exploded out of the gate, whereas we're aiming for long-term retention. It may feel in comparison that it means Amazon isn't backing the game as much as Respawn backed Apex. That's not what's happening here.

3. We have fixes and updates incoming for most of the major problems people are reporting in the short term, and for the features they're requesting in the medium and long term.

All that said, my offer to play a game extends to everyone in this thread. If you're skeptical and haven't played much yet, I'm happy to hop into a game with you and explain what I see in it. Friend code 8238 I'll be playing a lot this weekend.

The movement speeds being so low in addition to the map being so big feels really bad. You get killed, have to respawn somewhere on the edges, then spend what feels like an eternity getting back to the action. They could honestly boost the run speeds by like 1.5x without it feeling too fast.

As it stands, its just too slow paced to be a compelling esport. If respawn timers were half as long and people moved much faster, or had some other mobility options to traverse the map (jump pads or some poo poo) then maybe the game wouldn't feel so incredibly slow.

It's good to hear Amazon is committed to supporting the game long term; I very much hope that ends up being the case. I think a lot of the "negativity" is more in the realm of pragmatism. It's a crowded market and a lot of games that don't do well at launch end up dying pretty quick, especially if the financial entity behind it bails. The average gaming consumer has limited free time and wants to know that their time spent learning a new game will be rewarded by its continued existence and growth. Sadly, that often doesn't end up being the case, so people are reluctant to commit to new and unproven ventures.

If you guys are really in it for the long haul then just keep plugging away at it. Some will stick around to see where it goes, myself included.

I do think the movement speed needs to be increased by a decent bit, and maybe have the respawn points a little closer to the center of the map so that it doesn't take so long to get back in the action.

It also doesn't help that respawns take an extra 10-15 seconds because of the drop pod. That feels really bad and needs to be sped up a lot.

I will say that I'm really enjoying my time playing as Drakahl though, even if the hit registration is kinda garbage so it's hard to tell if you're actually doing damage.

It's a week after launch. Less than 500 people are currently watching on twitch and the game doesn't even show up on the steam top games list so less than 5k people are currently playing it.

I still stand by my post saying Amazon doesn't know how to market and is responsible for the thud

Well, PC Gamer also gave it a 48; the game has some serious problems.

Personally, I'm going to give it some time and see if I hear later that it got better, but I'm good on the game for now.

Edit: Sorry, if this is really the end of my time with the game I should give more feedback. I played 5 games.

Pros:
I think the characters are memorable and well done generally.
This game is definitely a shooter, the gun play is better than, say, SMITE. Better than Paladins for that matter. I really do mean this as a compliment, the game on the top half of this weird hybrid genre in terms of basic gun play.

Cons:
The game had real performance issues for me, and I'm not on a bad machine. I've heard the same from others. If the game's not smooth it's not going to be a good shooter.
The shooting mechanics are good but they're not great, compared to overwatch or apex it's not there. A loot of unsatisfying escapes by enemies. I think that might be more of the DOTA influence? Might be a design decision but I did not like it.

Number one thing I'd like to see is a more focused map, or mechanics that focus the current map, combined with smoother framerates.

Edit2: Oh! And I think the lobby music is modified by your character choice? That's a really nice touch.

Performance is the biggest problem. When things are running smoothly the game that's actually there is fun. Good movement, interesting abilities, cool teamfights, etc. But man, the sluggish performance often ruins it.

i think it will take development work, and a LOT more marketing work imo, but it is possible. it feels like 0 hype was built up about this game, and everything i did see about it labeled it as "amazon's game" which didn't do it any favors.

they need to do more trailers and things like that, actually show the production value that we know amazon should be capable of, if they're going to get anyone interested in it. they should have done it from the beginning, and i don't know why they didn't.

the game absolutely has potential. i hope that it's not squandered by corporate laziness.

To be fair, if they hyped it up a lot beforehand the launch probably would've been even more disastrous. I still don't understand the 6-hour beta concept that allowed streamers and a handful of other players to get in the game to show others, because it was followed by the game not releasing on time and the servers being down for a couple hours once people were able to download it.

I don't know if that 24k peak is accurate. I think that's the result of people restarting the game a lot on launch day because the servers were down for a few hours.

What would that have to do with peak players, if someone's constantly restarting the game that still only ever counts as one person

Lost track of this thread because things have been obviously busy on our end.

The Crucible team is committed to improving the game. On Friday we released a large update that resolves a lot of bugs and issues, and updates are going to continue. We have a lot of performance improvements in the pipeline, you'll be seeing them soon. We also have a bunch of updates incoming on UI and UX and new features that players have asked for.

On a personal note: despite the disappointing numbers, I believe Crucible is special and has a bright future ahead of it. We're trying to fix the problems so that others can see what we see in it, and I can only hope that once we do people will enjoy it.

It was probably somewhat of a necessity to limit the game to the 1 mode with the least number of players required, given the current player population. But removing 2/3 of the game modes and extending the 'Pre-Season' indefinitely will likely cause the game to receive even more flack, since this was launched as a final release and not a Beta or Early Access title. It's hard to see how this doesn't death-spiral even further, and it just feels kind of depressing for everybody involved, because the idea of Amazon becoming a player in the AAA games marketplace and competing with other big developers would probably be good for gamers.

Despite also wanting a major player in the competitive games market besides Valve, Riot, and Blizzard, getting Amazon as the big fourth one is a huge monkey's paw wish and I'm glad it isn't coming to fruition as far as we can tell. Would rather it be someone like GD Studio with Diabotical. Also, lol at the 8v8, AKA best game mode, being removed.

E: Even if we expand it to having a competitor against EA and Ubisoft and such, Amazon, the company that refused to give their warehouse workers bathroom breaks, is probably not the company to revolutionize the gaming industry and actually expunge lovely practices like crunch time. (There is an article on their website talking about how they're trying to emphasize the gender equality of their employees, but without seeing the floor for myself it could just be a PR piece.) If you think their subsidiaries like Amazon Game Studios stay separate from the influence of the main company, I'm sure it's true to an extent. However, just look at something like WaPo, which absolutely has been influenced by their ownership by Amazon. I'm sure their second game launch flopping harder than the first isn't doing Vino's work schedule favors, with their apparent attempts to salvage it to save face. I guess the only other thing the Seattle branch could have to work on is the upcoming Pac-Man Twitch game, but to be fair, it seems like the most unique game AGS is making despite being made on a pre-existing IP: https://www.amazongames.com/en-us/news/articles/pac-man-live-studio

(If Pac-Man is being handled by the OC studio, I would be afraid for the Seattle studio's longevity since right now it seems tied to a dead game)

I can't speak for others in my studio, but for me the culture and work life balance at Relentless is moderate to good. In my years at the studio I've had to crunch only in total a month or two, some of that of course being in the last few weeks, generally at critical points where we had no other option. Production does more or less a good job of realistic scheduling. Others have had to do more than I have, but the amount of studio-wide mandatory crunch has been minimal. The studio is also more diverse and generally higher paid than other places in the game industry. I was standing behind the camera for the banner photo of that article, it was a fun day. I would say that most people on the team care a lot about diversity. My last name is Rodriguez so I have a stake in it too. The culture trends toward the better and I hope Relentless does well so we can be a good example in the industry.

We're canceling Alpha Hunters effective soon, but we're keeping Harvester Command around for as long as it's important to our onboarding process, so it may not go away immediately or possibly at all depending on how things go. Internal numbers, which are a bit more accurate than SteamCharts, show the game has stabilized. So we'll see.

And thanks to you folks for being positive and supportive. Relentless is going to keep pushing on this pretty hard for as long as people continue to show support.
