Yo ho?

Gen V has a whole lot of my favorite pokemon in it. Some astoundingly good bug types and the raddest mono-fire pokemon in the series, especially. Really the only 'mons in the entire Unova dex that I actually dislike are the disgusting monkey trio and the Timburr line. Everything else (that I can remember) ranges from "okay, I guess" to great.

On the ones we've seen so far: I don't hate any of the starters, but I think Tepig's final form (and the fact that it's fire/fighting) is pretty disappointing. Oshawott gets one of my favorite middle forms ever, and Snivy excels at being a smuglord even if it's not the best battler.
Lillipup and its evolutions are A+ normal types, very good dogs. Patrat and Watchog kinda stink, but not offensively so and at least they have an interesting gimmick with Hypnosis.
Purrloin is a really good design (until they decided to make it bipedal, what the gently caress were they thinking) that's badly undercut by being really fragile and not hitting hard enough to take good advantage of its speed. Every time I try to use one it just gets beaten up until I feel bad and bench it. :(

Seriously though, send the elemental monkeys to prison and/or hell. Only Ambipom is worse than them.

I feel like the elemental monkeys would be better if they weren’t all variations on the same design and they didn’t show up once a route.

...what I’m saying is that a grass-water-fire family of monkey Pokémon would be ok if they weren’t the exact ones we got.

Honestly even all being variaitons on the same design would be fine if they did not do the thing of ALL THREE OF THEM showing up EVERY SINGLE TIME. Sometimes multiple times on a route throughout the game. They're either all on the same team or you find one with a monkey and its just wandering the trainer minefield until you find the other 2.

Otherwise they'd just be those samey monkeys they force on you at the start of the game, that's weird. Like in BW2, where they cut back on it drastically.

Yeah, the monkeys being on every route is the big issue. In a game with 150 new dudes to show off, they hog a ton of the real estate and make things annoyingly samey instead of letting the big old roster shine

One of the things I liked most about DPP was that you could see the entire Sinnoh Pokedex through playing the game and battling almost everyone. With a new completely new Pokedex in Gen V it would have been great for them to have done this again to showcase everyone.

They get close here. I think the only ones you dont see are...Tornadus/Thundurus (depending on version), Landorus and, for some reason, Vullaby. & Kyurem, I suppose, since that's psot game.

Hmm actually might as well figure this out to refer back to later. If you battle every trainer, you will only miss out on:

Audino, yes seriously, only Nimbasa sport court trainers have them.
Crustle has one trainer on Route 18, very easy to miss
Zorua
Foongus
Ferrothorn
Rufflet in Black
Vullaby/Mandibuzz in White
Durant
Zweilous
Larvesta

Plenty of Pokemon have just one trainer using them, like Golett, Stunfisk, Karrablast, but they're on the main path and pretty likely you'll come across them.

They were all in for hiding Zorua, weren't they? Can't see it in regular play, and the only way to catch one was either an event activated when you transfer a Celebi from Gen IV which could only be obtained during a one time event, or by breeding Zoroark which needed a specific roaming legendary which was only available from a one-time event as well!

At least you could see Zoroark in battle...

They tried to make Zorua/Zoroark the new Lucario including it having fake legendary status, and what better way to do that than making it an event mon?

Turns out, you can't force something to be liked, and Zorua ended up mostly forgettable and they had to make it normally obtainable in the following games.

I actually like Zorua and its evolution’s design and gimmick, even if they aren’t that useful competitively.

That said it’s very confusing they decided to make it an event when part of the reason Lucario was able to become popular is they gave you one in DPPt for free.

I do wish that they'd try that approach again as well, if only because there are a non-zero amount of the player base that doesn't want to waste time evolving/trading 'mons for what amounts to unlocking an expansion pack. At least BW takes the sensible route and unlocks the National Dex after beating the main story, instead of say, needing to catch and see everything before unlocking.

I'm one of those players who take the time to create a team where I can cover most if not all matchups, so having a game where that's encouraged is a nice change of pace.

They really thought they did something with those drat monkeys. I would almost like them more if they were more restricted? Like the one at the Dreamyard would feel more interesting if that was the only way you could get one, or one of the only opportunities. Though I don't know if making pokemon that mediocre restricted to that extent is a good idea.

I really do love this dex in general though. The team I used for my first run through of White is one of my most fondly remembered ingame teams for sure.

Huh? Unlocking the National Dex never worked like that...
RS: trade with any of Colosseum, XD, Emerald, or FRLG
FRLG: That longwinded post-game sidequest that also kept you from trading with RS and evolving your kanto pokemon
DPPt: See everything in the Sinnoh dex.

Emerald, HGSS, BW1 &2, XY, ORAS just have them unlock after beating the game.

The national dex is unlocked by defeating the Elite 4 and having 60 pokemon recorded in your dex. Said longwinded sidequest requires you to have the national dex as a prerequisite to starting it because it takes you into areas with Johto mons.

Part 2: Triple Tactics

New city, new items to grab and buy, definitely want a Heal Ball for something coming up.

Striaton City

Striaton City: Three Stand Together As One!
From striation, a series of paralell grooves in cloud formations, and tri, numerical prefix of three.
Sanyou City: Sanyou refers to three aligned stars.
From 三曜文 san'yōmon, a pattern of three packed circles that represent the three stars of Orion's Belt.

My advice is that when you use a better Pokeball, it's easier to catch Pokemon!

"Here's one for you."

Plus, its name is excellent! The Dusk Ball. Dusk!

Always good to get some ball variety, Dusk Balls are still amazing.

Gah, Giovanni again?!

He is not here. He could be in the Trainers' School. If you want to challenge him, please go find him. The Trainers' School is not far from this Gym.

We'll go the Trainers' School in just a sec, there's a few things to do first, very important of course.

This also includes goofing off to a side area!

Dreamyard

Not like Hamlet needs more experience, but I don't really have a choice.

So I hope you've liked the Pokemon we've encountered so far, you're going to become very familiar with them.

I want to win against Gym Leaders, but I want to win against you, too!

Yo is this a reference to Gen 2 Joey? Well yes actually, they have the same Japanese name, Gorō, and this won't be the last game we'll find a Youngster named Joey.

Not gonna do much with that Burn! When Pokemon get low on health, or have a status ailment, their animation slows down slightly, which is pretty cute. If Frozen, the animation stops completely, while putting a Pokemon to Sleep gives them a different sprite with their eyes closed, or some variation, depending on the Pokemon.

I have a goal! My Pokemon are there for me! That's why I can keep trying!

Tepig! Really? Then Pansage could be a big help! Your Tepig does not do well against Water-type Pokemon! Say, do you want this Pansage of mine? OK. Here you go! It can use Grass-type moves, so that makes it great against Water types!

Thanks to mateo360 for the nickname, it'll make a little more sense when he changes his voice in a few episodes.

If you have many types of Pokemon, something will work out, no matter what kind of Pokemon you have to face.

"This Pokémon dwells deep in the forest. Eating a leaf from its head whisks weariness away as if by magic."

Alright, here we go, I'm gonna talk about the monkeys now, so strap in motherfuckers!!!

Hmm, this nature isn't great and he has 3/28/13/19/17/28 in IVs, so I guess Speed will balance itself out.

Let's talk about the same Pokemon three times! The elemental monkeys are very similar and not particularly interesting, but those Pokemon work perfectly fine, you can take all 3 to the postgame with little issue, but you won't be excited about it. You cart them around a little while, get their strong move at level 22, and then evolve them so they don't fall behind. Since they're stone evolutions, they'll need TM help after, which works better for some than others, but you could do worse, I guess?

So Pansage is notable in that it's the mostly physical one, but that's due to movepool than anything, all 3 have the exact same stats throughout and can be mixed attackers with little issue. Its move before evolution is Seed Bomb, which is nice dependable damage and helps because Energy Ball is postgame. It learns few special moves otherwise, so you're kinda stuck with whatever physical coverage you can scramble together, but in a region with few physical Grass types, it's somewhat different, even if, again, it's really nothing impressive.

This monkey has a slight reputation we'll talk about later, but as far as a special Fire type goes, it really isn't anything special, though it won't get competition in that department for a fair while. It's very good competition though, but anyway, its move of note is Flame Burst, which is weaker than the others, great start, but does some effect damage in Doubles/Triples that acts as residual damage, so isn't affected by abilities or weaknesses. Its main issue, like most Fire types, is lack of coverage, which isn't helped by being a stone evolution, so it'll be using Flame Burst for a long while and will have to use some physical TMs to stay relevant, since its special options are very limited.

The final and best monkey, not that that really means much. Being a Water type is always a positive, especially since its important move is Scald, which is a ridiculously good move that can even supplant Surf if you were so inclined. It still has a few issues, such as the Water type's main draw, Ice moves, are limited to Blizzard until postgame. Yikes! Also it has competition with plenty of other Water types throughout the game and really doesn't do much to stand out, especially since it gets the same limited pool as the other monkeys. Also it means you chose Snivy for a starter, which is in itself a slight issue, but anyway, Scald is enough to pull this mon up, even if that's all it really has.

Before we talk to the nerd by the blackboard, let's be a nerd.

Ah, drat, if only the name of the item gave a hint!

Hrm... Paralyz Heal was gonna be my answer...

Since we can get all the various status heals, we don't need this just yet, but might as well.

Only a couple things to note with status effects: Poison no longer deals damage outside of battle, thank god, Flash Fire will now work when a Pokemon is frozen, and the biggest change is Sleep: it lasts 1-3 turns, but the sleep counter is reset when you switch out, which is pretty lame, they reverted that back next gen.

Hey, Touya. Have you come looking for the Gym Leader? He was here talking about Pokemon types until just a few moments ago... maybe you walked right past him? By the way, Touya, will you have a battle with me? I want to test how important items are in battles. Well, let's see how effective my items are... or maybe I should test how well I can battle without items...? Anyway, this is an indoor match, so let's battle without getting too rough!

Rival Battle

The giant VS will devour us all! Anyway since we now have a Grass type this won't be a problem.

There sure are a lot of different moves.

Cursed image.

Losing to you means that I still have a lot to learn.

So learning to use items well is definitely important, then. Oh, here. Touya, I'll give you these Berries.

If you give a Pokemon this kind of Berry to hold, it will eat it to heal up when its HP goes down in battle. But if you give Pokemon man-made items like Potions to hold, they can't use them. Well, good luck, then.

Right. You want to challenge the Gym. In that case... what was the first Pokemon you chose? Tepig... I see. It's weak against Water-type Pokemon. I think you need to prepare to face that type. I'll be waiting for you inside.

Pokemon Gym

We appreciate your challenging the Gym. Take this to commemorate the occasion.

One basic element of Pokemon battles is the relationship between types. If you choose Pokemon with effective types and effective moves, victory is just a step away! In this Gym, you proceed by stepping on the switch with the type that is effective against the Pokemon type shown on the curtain.

Nice and easy, fight fire with fire! Oh, uh, guess not then.

I ain't tipping, that's next gen.

Everything feels a lot more fragile due to how attacks are getting thrown out more often and Lillipup getting 50BP STAB doesn't help.

I think it is all right to move ahead with Pokemon you've trained well, even without thinking of type matchups.

Let's boil some water! Oh, uh, guess not then.

"I'm your second course."

Ooh, Bide on the first turn. That's a problem.

Sorry, Hamlet, Tristan needs the exp.

Purrloin with Sand Attack and Growl makes for miserable fights, at least we won't have to fight many more! Haha...

The speciality of Straiton Gym--the full course "Trainer de luxe!" To complete your repast--a Gym Leader.

Only WHO can prevent forest fires?

"Pleased to make your acquaintance."

And my name is Cilan. I like Grass-type Pokemon. Um, you see... as for why the three of us, um, are all here is, well, er...

Oh, enough! Listen up! The three of us will decide whom you'll battle! It'll be based on the type of the first Pokemon you chose!

That is indeed the case. And the partner you first chose was Fire type, it seems.

It shall be I and my esteemed Water types that you must face in battle!

Aww, man! I was all fired up, too!

...uh hm. I always seem to lose the timing of... of the dance. Like that. True enough, I did want to... want to have a Pokemon battle with you.

What incredible luck for you--you get to battle the best among the three of us.

Gym Leader Battle

Cress/Corn: Triple Trouble!/Trial triangle.
From watercress, and, well, Corn, which requires a lot of water due to shallow roots.

Alright, here in this Normal Gym, we're finally facing our first Water type, just need to get this drat dog outta the way. Work Up is the main move the AI spams, which raises Atk and SpAtk by 1 stage, terrifying this early.

Bit of healing back and forth and we come out on top, even with the strong Tackles coming our way. I guess I'll give Hamlet Defense Curl over Odor Sleuth, but I know I'll use neither anyway.

Victory is Right Before Your Eyes!

Now it's monkey battle time. There's dynamic music within battle too, as this will play on the Gym Leader's last Pokemon, no matter what it is. Unfortunately, I actually prefer the regular leader theme to this, but it's still a cool addition.

If you get the free monkey, then this fight isn't a challenge, the AI will specifically only use the not very effective attack if you use the monkey in this fight, meaning you will always be able to beat it with little issue. You don't have to take this option, but since Tristan will be a permanent team member, sorry not sorry, let's get lots of juicy exp for him.

Why, you're quite remarkable. It's the Pokemon League's rule, so--please take this Badge.

Back in my day we got the badge in the battle and that's the way we liked it!

If you have one Badge, Pokemon, including traded Pokemon up to Lv. 20, will obey you without question. We also want you to have this.

TM83 contains Work Up. If you use Work Up, the Pokemon's Attack and Sp. Atk go up! By the way, TMs can be used as many times as you want. In the Unova region, we are still novice Gym Leaders. Which means the other Gym Leaders are much stronger than we are. We'll need to work hard and improve.

I can't believe TMs can be used over and over! If you wanted, you could use one to teach all your Pokemon the same move!

If there were 17 siblings in the Striaton City Gym... there could be a specialist for each type of Pokemon.

"this Gym Badge."

A little bit of a complicated set up for the first badge, but I guess we won't be able to fight the other two siblings. Unless...? Ah, but that would require me playing the same game twice, you'd have to be crazy to do that! Haha, unless...?

I doubt any of you weren't expecting this, of course there will be a small window into how Black version differs, there's a fair bit to show here and there!

Problem with starting this later is it looks a little dark outside...

Again, I really don't fancy using Snivy in these games, if only there was another situation picking it would be an interesting idea. Such fantasy... let's beat up a pig!

Oh no, turns out I made the wrong choice, if only the opponent would have mercy and only go for status moves when I'm low health! Sounds like rampant casualization to me!

Snivy didn't get the opportunity to go easy on me. Here's a pink video chat.

Gah, Modest?! That's gonna make Megahorn and Waterfall a bit annoying to use. Won't complain though!

Is there a little too much pink?

Maybe, but hey, I can get my second team member much earlier!

We're gonna battle, come what may.

How exceedingly lucky for you that you do not have to face me.

So, um, if you're OK with me, I'll, um, put everything I've got into being, er, you know, your opponent.

Gym Leader Battle

Cilan/Dent: Triple Trouble!/Trial triangle.
From cilantro which, uh, what is that... it's what Americans call coriander? Why the gently caress does it have a different na- oh whatever... and dent corn, named so due to its dented kernels.

This feels all very familiar, but we're not gonna get much variation this early.

This time we won't use the monkey, mainly because no one likes the Pansear line, and also because we'll reduce its Defense before it knocks us out, letting my second mon secure the kill.

That was SUPPOSED to be the plan, but just to really make sure you can get past this fight, if you leave your starter in against the monkey it'll just spam Work Up. If you don't beat it before it gets to +6 it'll sweep your whole team, which is RUDE and also something I found out from a friend, haha...

Since Pansage is at +2 now, I don't think I would've won without that crit since it 2HKOs me. Who knew these monkeys were so good!

...what a surprise. You... are very strong. Seems like not even Chili or Cress could beat you...

We'll see the adventures of Touko in Black, y'all, later on, but I guess we should use the red-headed stepchild to beat the red-headed stepchild.

You've got 5 minutes.

I think we got low enough in Defense since this was a 6HKO that Oshawott was never gonna attack lest it accidentally knocked me out!

There's no way we'll win this unless... yeah, it just never attacks like before. Making me really feel like I made the right choice huh game.

Modest again??? Man if only it got any special moves to use that with.

I'll give it a monkey, what more does it need?! Though having just Snivy is pretty risky, since battles take longer due to lowered offenses, especially with my lowered Attack, it also means your take more damage despite higher Defenses. And when you get crit for 20 damage and faint, you black out for the first time in like, years. Not that I would know.

Yeeeeooow! Time to play with FIRE!! I'm the strongest of us brothers!

Chili/Pod: Triple Threat!/Trial triangle.
From, well, chilly, brr! Nah, it's from chilli peppers, from the nightshade family, originally from Mexico. And from pod corn, which forms leaves around each kernel.

Well Snivy can do some damage with Growth, which is basically Work Up now.

But if you're really not interested in using the monkey on your team and don't want to struggle with this fight, no biggie, you only have to use it once, no training required.

It really is that easy, especially if you give it an Oran Berry to hold, though this fight is a bad example since Incinerate, uh, stops that. Now you never have to use the monkey again.

I am... burned... out...

Whoa ho! You're on fire! Well, it's the Pokemon League's rule. Take this Gym Badge!

Well wasn't that fun, three fights, three strategies, boy do I know how to make content! Anyway, let's pretend most of this didn't happen.

Striaton City

Professor Juniper asked me to give you something. Please, follow me!

Oh, the stairs are right here!

In fact, the subject I'm researching is Trainers! Professor Juniper is my friend from college. She asked me to help you guys. So! I'll give you something to help you. This is a Hidden Machine for you!

With this Hidden Machine, you can teach your Pokemon a move called Cut. It can cut down a small tree. And you can use the Hidden Machine as many times as you want, like a TM. Isn't that great? But it's difficult to make a Pokemon forget a hidden move once it learns it.

There is a place called the Dreamyard on the outskirts of Striaton City. I'd like some of the Dream Mist that a Pokemon there called Munna gives off. With that, I'll be able to use Game Sync to collect save filed of various Trainers!

Did Juniper ask you to complete the Pokedex? It is a challenge to update the Pokedex regularly, isn't it? Oops! I got distracted! Please bring me some of the Dream Mist that Munna gives off in the Dreamyard!

Do you use the PC at Pokemon Centers? I am Amanita. I maintain the Box system. Do you know about the Battle Box? Please do use the Battle Box. You can register Pokemon in the PC over there, too!

Mmm, early Repels. Whatever Game Sync is, I'm sure we'll need to pay respects to it.

Now that we're getting a variety of items, registering multiple pockets is a great way to quickly heal mons out in the field, or lay down another Repel. This list will be growing soon enough.

Next time, we're gonna get some mist... no matter the cost.

As much as I like this game the decision to railroad you into the type triangle is just absurd. 2 routes of nothing except Patrat, Lillipup & Purrloin because can't let you have any variety so the gym leader has to trounce you so you can use the free monkey. It opens up almost immediately after this but yeesh, this is complete overkill. Thankfully they never do this again

The best way to sum it up is that the idea is sound (giving new players an explicit lesson on typing and weaknesses), but the execution absolutely faceplants hard. It's not helped by the fact that out of the monkeys, Pansage is probably the best of the lot by a slim margin due to being able to carve out a niche, as Crosspiece mentioned. Panpour and Pansear have to compete with other 'mons in their type class for the job, and poor Pansear really has an uphill battle because Unova actually has a good selection of Fire types to work with. Oh, and its evolution has a dumb looking sprite; seriously, a permanent "kiss the rings" pose does not work as well as you think it does.

Wasn't Simisear's evolution voted the least popular pokemon ever, too? :allears:

I swear, by my sword and capote, that I will once again prove victorious!!
Simisear is the evolution.

And yep. Yeeeeep.

...I actually liked it enough to use it through the entirety of X. What does that say about me...?

Wow, the English names for the gym leaders are so much better than the JP ones. I know this region is based on the US - but water corn and fire corn, really? Or is there a great pun hidden in those names?

Woo, I was right about the first rival fights being impossible to lose. Is me getting that right consolation enough for how dumb that is? I don't know!

The Japanese names would have been better if Chili had been named Pop instead of Pod. Then we'd have Corn, Dent (corn), and Pop (corn).

I personally like the Simisage line since one was on my first nuzlocke championship of White, but I do think the other two monkeys get a bit of a hard rep. I know Simisear is competing with a few other good fire types, but it's not a bad Pokemon to use and Simipour can be handy with Surf/Scald.

gently caress everything about the monkeys.

Mostly it just annoys me that the game treats you like you're really, really stupid. The starters are fire/water/grass. The trainer school almost certainly explains fire/water/grass matchups (I don't remember but it usually does). You get given a monkey along with an explanation of fire/water/grass. We're going to encounter so goddamn many monkey trainers demonstrating fire/water/grass. And then the normal type gym has a fire/water/grass theme and makes sure to explain it yet again in case you've suffered severe brain damage in the ten minutes since someone last told you. Yes, okay, we loving get it, please show us literally any other type matchups if you insist on staying in tutorial mode.

I cannot believe it took them 5 generations until they finally called your rival the N word themselves.

Looking forward to another LP, i kinda skimmed the tail end of the TCG thread because it got very samey. Unlike gen V, my return point to the series after gen 2. I never had a GBA and got a DS a bit before launch of this game. Played it a lot, what I really like is that gym leaders here are more then just dude in a dojo, they really took effort to make then feel like characters this time. Also the region is pretty and the big twist coming right before the champion was enough to make this one feel fresh and intense, instead of the big bad thing happening right before and the E4 being an afterthought like in gen 6.

It's probably something that sounds less dumb to Japanese speakers? You know like how Sandshrew is just "Sand" in japan.

All 3 of them being named after different kinds of Corn is probably just because they're triplets and they wanted the same motif for all 3

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

Its the same kinda reasoning that led to the Kanto legendary birds being named Thunder, Freezer and Fire in Japanese, or how FF6's Terra is named Tina in Japanese, or how the rival prosecutor in Apollo Justice is named Klavier (German for keyboard); the names sound more exotic to a non-native speaker so they end up getting used as names and stand out a little more.

Part 3: Meet the Team

Dreamyard

Whatever it is, we're about 6 years too late.

Hey! Did you hear a sound coming from the other side of that wall? Come on! Let's go see!

Who's that Pokemon?

Team Encounter

...Mu!

Huh? Who are you?! What are you doing?

Are you talking about us? We're Team Plasma. We battle day and night to liberate Pokemon from foolish humans!

What are we doing? The Pokemon Munna and Musharna emit a mysterious vapor called Dream Mist, which shows people's dreams. We're going to use that to make people want to release their Pokemon... we'll show them dreams to manipulate their hearts.

You're kicking a Pokemon to make it give off Dream Mist? That's mean! Why? You're Trainers too, right?

That's right. We're Pokemon Trainers too, but we're fighting for a different reason. Unlike you two, we're fighting for the freedom of Pokemon!

And setting Pokemon free means that we win Pokemon battles and take Pokemon by force! So, on that note, we are going to rescue your Pokemon from you!

Whaaat! Don't hurt Touya!

Plasma Battle

Hey you can't take my Pokemon, I like at least one of them!

Let's use a slightly less accurate Tackle, hell yeah HMs!

Were you not taking them seriously because they're kids? Well, whatever, I'm next!

Well with Pokemon like these I don't think we have to be too worried about this villainous team.

...I can't believe we lost! But we have to obtain the Dream Mist!

Come on! Make with the Dream Mist!

Knock it off!

"from foolish people!"

This is getting out of hand, now there are two of them.

T-this isn't... Ghetsis when he is trying to gather followers... or Ghetsis when he is trying to control people by tricking them with speeches!

Yeah... this is Ghetsis when a plan has failed and he is about to issue punishment... at any rate, let's hurry and say we're sorry so he forgives us!

...what was that just now? That person called Ghetsis appeared all over the place, and it wasn't real, right?! ...could it have been a dream? And that Pokemon...

...is that Musharna?!

Musha?

Munii!

Did something happen?

Oh, Fennel. Well, you see, Munna was here... but Team Plasma and Munna... and Musharna came... and it showed us something like a dream? And then, Team Plasma...

I think I followed that... see, Musharna evolves from Munna. So, seeing Munna in trouble, it used its power--making dreams into reality--to save Munna. Which means... wait a second!

With this, I can complete my research! You two come to my house later, OK?

Phew. How random was that? Touya, why don't you go to Fennel's house? Me? Well, I'm going to go look for the Pokemon we saw just now.

Let's pick the place clean, seems there's a cone blocking my way into the rest of the Dreamyard, wonder if there's a HM for that...?

Now we can hunt in the grass for something new!

This little piggy is showing off that abilities display themselves quite profoundly now, so you should never forget it! Munna is an interesting Pokemon held back by its evolution method. It hits alright but will hardly ever outspeed, and have to manage with Psybeam for a very long time, since it won't learn any new moves when it evolves. The best time is around level 25 I guess, for Synchronoise, though that's a terrible move since it'll always be resisted. Keeping Munna around until level 37 for Psychic isn't worth it, but Psychic TM is postgame, so evolving leaves you stuck at Psybeam. Not great.

"Munna always float in the air. People whose dreams are eaten by them forget what the dreams had been about."

Psywave might make some rude damage early on, but it'll soon be replaced by Psybeam, which hits just as hard.

Now that we haven't forgotten anything, let's head back to Fennel.

Striaton City

Thanks to you, I got some Dream Mist, and now I can collect save files of various Trainers! Thank you very much! As a token of my appreciation, I will give you this C-Gear to use! The C-Gear is a device related to communications, such as Infrared Connection or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Hmm, okay, but just this once!

If you touch the "?" icon at the bottom-right of the screen, you can read about the C-Gear.

I'd like to explain a little more about the system to collect Trainers' save files. Now Game Sync can retrieve memories of sleeping Pokemon using Dream Mist! That's right! We can collect save files of Trainers from all over the world! What's more, we learned that if you use Game Sync to make a Pokemon sleep, it will have dreams. Then, when you wake up that Pokemon, its dream becomes the reality in a space called Entralink in the middle of the the Unova region. Isn't Game Sync interesting? If you like, please send your save file.

This is from me. Please take it. Don't be shy.

After you register, you can link with those friends over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to do all kinds of fun things! You can trade Pokemon, challenge your friends to a battle, and so on. You can either input your friend's code directly by using your Pal Pad... or you can use the IR Connection feature of the C-Gear.

Alright, fine, the drat C-Gear, it's practically useless these days unless you want to physically connect with friends nearby, since all Gen 5 online features closed May 2014, which need I still remind you, was EIGHTEEN MONTHS after B2W2's release. Ridiculous. Anyway, there's 3 main tabs to the C-Gear, Online lets you sync your save file with the Dream World, stuff I'll go into much more detail in later, so you can skip it if you wish, ain't I nice?

IR is when you want to connect with someone nearby without the hassle of trading friend codes and the like, it's pretty quick and easy.

The Wireless mode is something we will use later, mainly to show off a dead, inaccessible side mode, you know, most of the stuff I've been showing off in these LPs! We can't use the Entralink just yet, but soon...

Using the screw in the corner you can tap on the different cells to change what colour they are, or nothing at all, you cycle through things one at a time, so it's a bit of a pain to get things juuuuuuust right.

The pie chart in the corner are Surveys... we'll talk about these later... just know it's related to the:

Tag Log! The cylinder along the bottom is the Streetpass before Streetpass.

Again, we'll go into most of this stuff later, because for 99% of the LP, the C-Gear will be off and completely useless, mostly because I'm on an emulator, but also because most of its features, when not tied to dead servers, RIP, are for local play only, something hardly any westerner with Pokemon does. Did you have a friend who played Gen 4/5 Pokemon during high school? No, of course not, I didn't and I assume everyone had the same experience as me!!!

Meanwhile, the girl gets the pink C-Gear with hearts, yaaaaaay!

Last couple of things before we head out, since the C-Gear is useless, you will have to say no, turn it off, whenever you start the game back up, it's super annoying. And we get 2 NEW! menu options that only have the NEW! go away when you connect to the internet through them. Battle Competition is part of the Pokemon Global Link, which is where the Dream World was accessed, therefore something we'll go over later, shocker I know. Game Sync settings let's you set up a Game Sync to your Global Link account and then shows your Game Sync ID thereafter.

Very important hidden item to grab, Balm Mushrooms don't do anything, like other sellable items, but are so rare they sell for a BOATLOAD, definitely wanna grab any you can.

Route 3 Spring

Don't get too excited, we can only put 1 Pokemon in right now.

Double battle, double trouble. Still the same, just much faster!

Maybe I could have won if I had used a Potion or something at some point? It's hard to win in a Double Battle if one Pokemon faints.

Hrmmmmm, it's barely been 5 minutes, why are you challenging me to my SIXTH rival battle???

Oh right, you've grown 6 levels in around 300 images. Seems legit.

He won't lead with his starter starting from the next fight, thank god, but Purrloin still channels its spirit via Assist. Like man, when was the last time you saw Water Sport used effectively?

It still has Growl and Sand Attack too! Absolute hell.

We have the same number of Gym Badges. We should be equals in strength... I see. So that's how you battle.

Here Comes Trouble!

What was that about? Bianca? Why are you running?

That way, but... why are you running now?

Oh, seriously! They run so fast!

Miss... oh... my Pokemon?

It'll be OK. It'll be OK. Don't cry.

Bianca, really, why were you running?

You have to hear this! Those people stole this girl's Pokemon!

You should have spoken up sooner! Touya, we're going to get that Pokemon back. Bianca! Please stay by the girl's side.

Team Plasma took that Pokemon. Get it back!

Oh, why do they take people's Pokemon?

Me and Cheren are on the case! Police, never heard of them!

Touya, your Pokemon's HP is fine, and you're ready to go, right? Then let's go.

Team Encounter

These bothersome bunch don't really listen to reason.

That child cannot use a Pokemon to its full potential. Doesn't that make the Pokemon sad? It's the same for all your Pokemon, so hand them over to us now! Better yet... we'll just take them!

Plasma Battle

Cheers for taking the Bide, Munna, man I need to stop that happening.

Wha...? How could we lose when we have right on our side?!

Not bad, Touya. OK, go return the Pokemon to that girl.

Not only do you fail to understand, but you actually got in our way, to boot.

There's two of you and two of us. We'll show you our combined power and teach you that we are right!

So, there were more of them... still, why are Pokemon robbers acting so self-righteous? Touya! We've been friends our whole lives. We've got each other's back when it counts. Let's show them how it's done!

Cheren is exactly as useful as his starter is, which hey, Oshawott 2HKOs with Water Gun, nice!

Of course he doesn't go for it on the next turn.

Still, just gotta focus one down while Cheren acts randomly and you'll be just fine.

In order to liberate Pokemon from foolish people, we will take their Pokemon!

Whatever... what a waste of time. Come on, what reason could possibly justify stealing Pokemon from people?

Pokemon Trainers like you are making Pokemon suffer...

What do you mean, Trainers are making Pokemon suffer? I don't get that at all!

But be aware of how this Pokemon suffers from being used by people. Someday, open your eyes to your own complicity.

Pokemon believe in their Trainers and respond to that. I don't understand what about that makes Pokemon suffer! OK, Touya, I'll return the Pokemon.

Wellspring Cave

Mmm, some deep stuff to think about maaaaaaaan. But while we mull over whether we're an abusive owner or not, let's take another animal from its home and pit it against others for money!

Alright, first encounter, very nice! You'd look great in a Heal Ba- gently caress! Guess I should've brought more than one...

"Its habitat is dark forests and caves. It emits ultrasonic waves from its nose to learn about its surroundings."

Cute and woolly, how I like them! Woobat evolves via friendship, so getting one early is very nice, especially since it adds a Confusion kick our team currently lacks. Unlike Munna it'll learn more moves as it evolves, but you will be relying on Heart Stamp and Air Cutter for a while. Hey, most Pokemon we've found so far are miserable to use midgame for some stupid loving reason, what can ya do. At least it'll learn Psychic before postgame, but it'll still be pretty late and while it can hit just fine from both sides, it's speedy to the detriment of its other stats. No matter, it'll do you just fine, especially if you give it lots of love.

While we don't have all the right characters, Corazón is a very good suggestion, by Angel, one of the patrons of the good Etrian Odyssey Discord, don't worry, they get the one cause they're cool peeps, there's plenty of nicknaming and voting to come! This let me record a bit more, always good to have a buffer.

...Jolly, that's uh, that's not great. With 2/30/8/6/2/10 IVs we have our third mixed attackers, it might actually be a better physical mon, which is pretty lovely!!!

Oh hey it's Unovan Geodude. Roggenrola is basically what you expect from a a Geodude clone, low Spd, has lots of Def and lots of Atk. It has some interesting quirks, Sturdy means it'll now no longer be one shot, as it's basically a Focus Sash, while Rock Blast means it can tackle other Sturdy users if you're lucky. It has less weaknesses than Geodude too, making it a little easier to field, but won't get any good moves until Rock Slide, a little bit after it evolves, so you'll be relying on Headbutt for damage. Of course it needs to be traded to reach its full potential, but you've got local friends, right? Anyway, a fine option, but lacks coverage and good moves early.

"Its ear is hexagonal in shape. Compressed underground, its body is as hard as steel."

Can you believe we only covered the 3 monkeys last update? Talk about early game variety...

We've got 1 more Pokemon to encounter, but it's only in a dust cloud that spawns after enough steps. Little tricky to do without Repels, but even if you don't get the encounter, you can get some very nice items and gems.

A Pokemon encounter is a 40% chance. A type gem, which boosts a move of that type by 50% once, is around a 50% chance, so around 3% each, while stones have a 10% chance, so a 0.8% chance each, yikes! This means that there's an infinite amount of evolution stones, they're just rare as hell, best not rely on them.

There we go, didn't take too long. Drilbur evolves into one of the best Pokemon in the game, hell maybe even the series, but as it is, it's... passable. Its high Atk definitely carries, but since it'll be a while until it evolves, you'll be using non-STAB Metal Claw and... DIG for damage until Slash at 26. Since dust clouds let it reach level 31 in later caves, it's probably to good idea to wait, it'll definitely be worth it! Otherwise it learns Rock Slide before evolving and will be great when it gets to that point. That point is quite a while away yet, alas.

"It can dig through the ground at a speed of 30 mph. It could give a car running aboveground a good race."

That's it for this cave, so with our new team member, let's explore some of Route 3 we skipped over.

Route 3 Spring

Uh, alright, if there's new encounters in this grass, guess we'll encounter them after this trainer.

Ah crap all the early game mons get Bite, this is the worst!

Pigeons? Yup we're definitely in New York. Or, Long Island to be precise. Anyway, Pidove is a pretty alright physical attacker, neat. The only physical move it learns until Facade at FIFTY FIVE is Quick Attack, oh no! Seriously are Game Freak just loving idiots or something, why the hell is the best attack this mon gets for a long time Air Cutter? It boggles the mind. Well, nothing Return can't fix, but then why not use Lillipup? Its best options even with TMs are Pluck or Aerial Ace, it doesn't even learn Brave Bird or Acrobatics through TM. This would've been a perfectly alright Pokemon as is, but its movepool is dire, so maybe don't use this, even if Return will carry it.

Please, let your precious Pokemon have this.

"they naturally understand each other!"

Some trainers will give items after battle, which is cool I guess.

Anyway, here's the birb, I think we made the right choice.

"Each follows its Trainer's orders as best it can, but they sometimes fail to understand complicated commands."

Hmm, weren't we in the middle of a sideplot?

I'm lucky to have friends like you two!

Thank you, mister! Please take these as a thank-you present.

Ooh! Those are Heal Balls! They completely heal the captured Pokemon on the spot! How sweet of you! I'm going to see this girl on her way, so see you later, Touya. Bye-bye!

With that all settled, let's visit this preschool, I want some drat lunch money!

Free heal that's only slightly easier to go back to than Striaton's center.

I left this place so Corazon could easily train, but since the first one I found was at the highest level, it uh, won't need much!

At least Corazon can smack opposing Psychics around.

Speak while making eye contact, and express your feelings to each other... it's the same for people and Pokemon.

Young kids are fine to have Pokemon under adult supervision.

Argh! You went all out against a kid! ...actually, that's a good thing. Thanks!

So we've seen one monkey, so you should expect...

The other 2 nearby. Either with the same trainer, or with 2 other trainers. It's as exciting as it sounds.

As much as I would love to fight a green monkey immediately, I need to play in the sandpit.

NANI?!

Hey wait a minute, this can't learn Hyper Beam until it evolves. Why I oughta...!

Hyper Beam? Oh, my Pokemon can't really use it yet. I don't know much about Pokemon, so I just want to use really cool moves.

Well that's enough playing around, even though we're old enough to stand on the slide, next time, we finally leave this drat area and head to the second Gym!
