Here's the insane manifesto written in the first edition:

---------------------------

If there's something hard to do in this country, it is to be a comic book artist.

The local publishers sit on their lazy asses and only care to bring American comics. Unaware of what the readers want, they give money to the gringos and kill the dreams of millions of Brazilian artists who, without a place to publish, go wherever their hunger sends them: After money and food.

But every now and then we get a comic book of our own.

And so is this. This comic book was made for the purpose of riding on the success of the MEGAMAN animated series, of course!

The merits of this comic book can be seen from its very stylistic choices: This is the first 100% Brazilian manga that isn't copying Japanese stories; It's the first manga ever made by a woman; It's my first official job as a writer; it's the first to use computer-assisted coloring.

The plot goes like this: I took a look at the animated series and completely ignored the story, because it's so bad! So, this comic has NOTHING TO DO with the tv show, written with the sole purpose of selling toys. And neither does this comic resemble the "plots" of the games, because a videogame cartridge can never tell a proper story: It just strings you along, so you can move that mouse pointer across the screen and get an RSI (???). I'd rather be different and (some insanely old idiom (I don't even know the literal meaning of this (Googling))) be annoying on purpose!

Who am I? I'm not one of those people who writecomic books just to make a few bucks and then be quickly forgotten. I plan to follow an entire plot arc. And I'm not writing this for my friends, nor do I suck Kamen Rider (??????????????). That would be a gross incompetence from my part...

The team and I are doing the best possible job we can. The story is good, within what is reasonable to expect from a comic book, the artwork is also cool and I even ask for your help with the screenwriting! When was the last time a Brazilian writer asked you what it is you want to read?

So in order to write this comic I'm counting on you. Send your critiques, give me your opinion, but do be careful with what you're asking! I'm not gonna accept adaptations from the TV show or alternative timelines from the cartridge "plots". Be creative!

This comic is yours, the writing is yours, not mine. My team and I are just doing our job. Do yours: Buy the magazine, tell your friends to do the same and send us your suggestions.

We need your support. Let's see what's gonna happen.

So if you're wondering about why this thing is drawn like garbage, in the 90's there was a craze about drawing manga here. I think it's safe to say the biggest influence was Masami Kurumada (Saint Seiya) who is not exactly good at drawing faces.

Nevertheless J-stuff were absolutely huge here and 80's manga were a big influence, so there were swarms of "how to draw manga" magazines trying to teach you how to poorly emulate the 80's without teaching you the fundamentals.

That blackman thing is... insane. Like, I don't think the picture is doctored, but I'm pretty sure Kamen Rider Black was cast here with the original name, and Kamen Rider Black RX also kept the same title.

Here are the openings - Notice they say Kamen Rider Black and Kamen Rider Black RX in English (well the RX is pronounced in Portuguese, but you get the idea):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhqdhWcoZTU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeec7NJ7nQc

The video description does mention that it was licensed both as Kamen Rider Black and Blackman. I wonder if it was licensed as Blackman to some other TV channel or state and I never got to see that weirdness here in Rio.

I remember seeing the toys for sale and really wanting them, but I also remember seeing stuff under different name and assuming they were fakes. So maybe those memories are from seeing the Blackman toys and assuming they were pirated.

Also by the way this was A THING.

Apparently buying the last episode cost extra. So what the networks did was simply rerun as much as they could, often stopping at random parts of the show (like halfway, or a third of the way, and so on) in the hopes that no one would notice they were doing that because they didn't have the finale and were just milking for fun.

That happened with most shows. The main exception was Saint Seiya because I think if they didn't air the last episode of the sanctuary arc, people here would actually riot.

It cannot be overstated how much Brazilians like Saint Seiya.

If we didn't have someone in this thread that was involved in the translation, I'd swear the dialogue was fake.

It seems very in line with something a Brazilian would write. After the dictatorship our cultural paradigm shifted away from metaphors - which were the closest we had to an anti-censorship tool, towards being as literal and direct as possible, connecting everything to the government and public figures.

To make matters worse, before the Internet kinda threw off the status quo a bit, our cultural cornerstones were utterly dominated by a really tiny handful of people. Imagine if Elvis was not only still alive, but still the biggest sensation in pop culture, and forcefully kept that way by the media, along with, I dunno, maybe a dozen other names across decades. I have so many :words: about this subject but I've written enough about it in the mestizone thread, I'll leave it be.

In any case, this comic is better understood under the light of pornochanchada. Due to a mix of heavy political censorship and the American movie industry being overwhelming, most movies made here were sex comedies, sometimes featuring famous TV stars naked as a means to attract a bigger audience. There's a certain irony in that these movies were allowed under a strict censorship policy, but they basically avoided as much as possible to contain any politically subversive material.

Cue the 90's, where older people like this comic's writer are still heavily influenced by pornochanchadas, but also finally get to talk about politics as much as they want to. Hence you get the cultural scenario where you see Roll constantly naked and a Megaman villain named after Brazilian politicians.

As a random trivia, Mike Patton is a real big fan of pornochanchadas.

you're not wrong but it's still interesting to see wtf they were up to down there/back then and apparently wild shifts in tone between sexualized child body modification/murder and robo-race hijinks full of one-liners is part of that

Sigh. Anyways, here we go.

In the early 00s all the way back to... I don't know. As far as I'm aware, since forever, there was a strong culture of age gap here. Yes, I'm pretty sure you might be thinking "my Country was the same", but consider that one of most popular songs of 1996 is an R&B song about how a 24yo is in love with a 12yo, calling her a muse and so on. The song is called "Our dream" and plays it as romantically and unironically as possible.

Did I mention Mike Patton before? Oh. Yes. He has a song called Caralho Voador (flying dick) which is an en passant reference to an 80's movie about a father that pimps out his (underage) daughters.

There were dance clubs for young people called matinês here. Here's something that creeped the hell out of me when I was ~12: These places were teeming with 17yos because they were still legally able to do whatever with essentially no age restriction, and 18+ people called papa-anjos ("Angel Eaters") because of the legal age of consent being 14. This is the kind of poo poo I got constantly:

Angel Eater: Wanna do it?
Me: No.
Angel Eater: But... it's legal. - Followed by a confused face.

Also the samba school parade is essentially a long event of seeing nudity either on the TV or in the streets (the latter seems to have gone down lately). Including during hours where kids would be awake.

All of this is the account from the PoV of someone who felt uncomfortable with these things, and like I said, I'm prudish. For these things to be culturally accepted they had to be normalized to some extent, so other Brazilians will likely give you a different opinion or think it was not so bad.

Probably the novelty of it being Megaman-related. Megaman was popular here. Not as popular as Sonic or Street Fighter, but still pretty popular.

Also it being a local production probably earned it enough novelty points for people to stick with it for a few editions.
