As promised in the last thread I luckily have Thousand Sons to paint so was able to take one for the team and watch this movie from beginning to end.

It’s certainly something. The plot follows a priest who ends up getting mixed up with a scientist who due to nearing the menopause (despite the actress looking in her late 20s) has opted to implant an embryo so she can have a child. This embryo happens to be a clone of Princess Diana. Now she could make do with any old embryo but in her words if it isn’t Diana then she won’t get any book or film deals. Apparently Diana was “officially the most beautiful person in the world - inside and out.”

The film is trying to be a web-of-intrigue thriller but goes off the rails with too many plot threads and additional characters, with some downright baffling choices like using hilariously unconvincing special effects instead of using readily available cheap stock footage.

The best way I can describe this film is it’s like one of those porn-with-a-plot movies but without any actual sex or nudity, written and filmed by someone with a real hard on for the royals/Diana. Honestly Neil Breen makes more coherent films than this.

Would be good for a laugh with some friends and booze mind, especially for the helicopter special effect shot which is someone holding a toy chopper with their hand just out of frame in front of some aerial footage.

It's difficult as a white person to know what the right thing to do is to express support.

For example, I'm seeing on twitter PoC people saying "if you're white don't contact your black friends to ask how they are because you don't really care and it's just performative" (well I do care about my PoC friends and if I ask, I'm genuine in asking - and ok, maybe I didn't contact them for a while but I have quite a few friends I only contact now and then when something kicks off - eg friends in Aus during the fires earlier this year, same as friends are prompted to contact me when they hear of flooding in my area or at various other times in my life eg Kings Cross fire when I was working in the NHS in central London or during the revolution in Egypt),

Also some are taking offence at police officers 'taking the knee' or asking to walk with them. I know some police officers are quitting because of what's happening, but in a place like the US when quitting your job means you lose all health care insurance for you and your family, where unemployment is high, it's quite a big ask.

How can a white person best express support without seeming to be performative or patronising? What do thread persons think?

(I remember an incident from school where some white kids were calling one of the black kids various bad names n*, w* etc, so the white teacher told them off, and the black kid stood up and said 'who do you think you are sir, the great white saviour of the black races'. I also remember we had a black student teacher for cookery and most of the class refused to do her lessons and wouldn't bring any ingredients or anything. I was one of the few who did.

You’re always going to get people who are (understandably) jaded and suspicious, and you’re always going to get people who are just assholes. In a lot of ways you can’t blame them, because there’s plenty of folks who will put up a #blackouttuesday post and promptly go on to do poo poo that’s harmful to BAME folks. Or plenty of people who claim to not be racist but promptly tie themselves in knots to try and justify a reason when a cop murders a black person.

So as far as I know the rule of thumb is basically be supportive, listen, and don’t try and talk over black voices.

The Hawaii Five-O reimagining had one of the cops parachute into North Korea to take revenge for a soldier buddy who got killed.

They didn’t even bother to make the enemy soldiers look North Korean or film in an environment that resembled NK. Looked closer to guerillas in South American rainforests.

A guilty pleasure of mine is reading Mumsnet and PistonHeads on my lunch break at work. It’s an often amusing and sometimes infuriating insight into a totally different mindset.

What always gets me about PistonHeads is how the prevailing attitude amongst gammons when another black person gets murdered by the police is “well if they followed the law they’d have nothing to worry about would they?!”

Curiously this attitude does not apply when they get stung with a speeding fine.

I noped out of there last year when I saw the comments on some post related to trans issues. Yikes.

In a similar vein Mumsnet is absolutely furious with Daniel Radcliffe/Eddie Redmayne/Emma Watson etc for their comments regarding JK Rowling.

They’re also pissed about the protests and statues coming down. They’re amazingly fragile people they really are.

Its parked on the street but leaving it there untouched until I get my furlough payment and can get the MOT done shouldn't cause any issues. I live close enough to the garage anyway

Jose, what makes you so sure you’ll fail on tyres? Is your tread down to the wear blocks? Have you got any cuts, bulges or tears in the sidewall? Any uneven wear or cords showing?

Not that I can see but the last MOT had these advisories. Only done about 2k miles since then and not had any pressure issues related to the nail in the rear tyre

Nearside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge Cracked (5.2.3 (e))
Offside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge Cracked (5.2.3 (e))
Nearside Rear Tyre cracked and castellated
Offside Rear Nail in tyre ()

The problem is as far as I am aware once you go below 3mm they'll put it down as an advisory, although the legal limit is 1.6mm so there is a lot of leeway. I can't see you losing much tread from 2000 miles in a year, but its all dependant on the car/tyres/driving style etc, so what was an advisory then could well still be one now. If you could post a couple of pictures where the wear blocks are visible we can advise you.

Personally if you're really that worried about it, or you post pictures and it turns out your tyres are really hosed, I would suggest ordering tyres online from somewhere like blackcircles.com and get them fitted before the MOT. If you fail the MOT on tyres and have to go to a tyre shop on the day, you will get absolutely hosed over price wise. They also do buy now pay later options, so you could get it all done in advance and then just pay them when you get your furlough cash.

I usually use Blackcircles and occasionally ASDA tyres to get mine because they cost an arm and a leg otherwise, and theyr'e legit. Just make sure you pick a decent garage to get them delivered to.

Sounds like a good price. Assuming everything else on the car is good to pass its MOT?

Getting a bit annoyed with people saying why should NHS staff get free car parking, they should have to pay for it like everyone else does, or use public transport.
Everywhere is NOT LONDON with it's amazing public transport system (which until you've lived in the styx you really don't appreciate).

Where I live, it is simply not possible to do any sort of shift work and use public transport. In fact unless you live right in one of the big towns with jobs and hospitals, it is barely possible to do a regular 9-5 job and get there by public transport. If medical staff and ancillary workers are required to do shifts in many parts of the country, cars are essential.

And ps - we are talking daily car parking charges of anything from £15-£35 per day and daily bus fares of £8.80 maybe.

I bet most people saying poo poo like this park for free in an office car park.

I get our broadband heavily discounted through work, but it only comes as a package including tv and a phone line, so I don’t have much choice when it comes to a tv licence.

Can honestly say though since getting it installed at the start of February I’ve watched a total of 25 minutes of broadcast television. The phone line doesn’t even have a phone plugged in.

If anything the various anecdotes people have posted just go to show that there are oblivious and/or selfish people on all forms of transport. I personally have a mountain bike and will visit trail centres on my days off so I can get off road trail riding done without having to worry about cars or pedestrians.

Despite this whenever there is any kind of event on that has spectators, pedestrians will decide the mountain bike trail is a lovely place to stand and chat and get all annoyed when trail users ask them to get out the way. There is plenty of standing room on massive grass verges a couple of feet away and plenty of signage to say they shouldn’t be on the trail. In that same vein I saw some potentially nasty near misses at Hadleigh Park a few weeks ago when a family decided that a steep rock descent was a great play area for their kids just as a couple of bikes were coming down it.

Segregated infrastructure is obviously the best way forward but there would need to be some regulations to go with it (I.e. keep left, let faster riders overtake you, don’t run a red light etc), and mostly importantly they would need to be enforced.

Don’t even get me started on people who ride in the dark with no lights or reflectors.

Mask trip report - stopped off at Tesco to grab some bits from the pharmacy for my partner yesterday and was surprised to see every single customer bar one wearing a mask. Said customer was loudly yelling at the tobacco counter “IF YOU DUN AVE TO WEAR A MASK THEN I DUN AVTA EIVAH!!!1”

Every member of staff had one on except for the ones manning checkouts. Honestly was quite impressed.

I spent £1000 on my hardtail a couple of years back, but that’s like the sweet spot for a hardtail mountain bike as diminishing returns start to bite after that point.

I certainly wouldn’t spend that on a commuter bike for reasons people have already mentioned, and it is only ever left unattended when it’s at home inside my flat. I’ve also got these nice things called Wheel Wellies that wrap around my tyres so when my bike is wet and muddy after a ride like today, I don’t get murdered by my partner.

Since I've been working from home, I've found myself watching dashcam compilations on my lunch break from time to time.
Some of them are good, but the UK ones are just a dumpster fire of poo poo.

Yeah, you've got the Audi/Merc/BMW-driving cunts who treat everyone else as if they don't belong on the road, but everyone knows them.
The real treats are the ~50% of clips from the submitters themselves acting like complete arseholes. You've got morons who launch into a roundabout at the speed limit and then get furious at people who assume they might have some time to get round themselves. Or the morons who don't slow down when a car 60-70m away is going to turn into their lane and then have to break dangerously and pulverise their horn to express their displeasure.
Or, and this is my personal favourite, the shitstain who was so angry that a motorcyclist overtook him on a residential road that he twice rammed the rear wheel of the motorbike and then got out of his car to ask the guy if he wanted a fight. And then uploaded the clip because I guess he didn't think he did anything wrong.

I bet they all vote Tory.

You’re going to have to link us to that last one because that sounds incredible. My personal favourite so far is someone who sees another driver miss a green light and slip through a red at an intersection. The dashcammer decides to jump their own red light so they can floor it towards the offending car, slam their brakes on and lay on the horn.

That not why I find that the UK ones suck though. It’s because the other 45% of clips are all of minor faux pas like changing lanes without indicating or poor driving in a supermarket car park, where the correct response is to roll your eyes and go about your day. Hardly the kind of thing I want to watch a 10 minute compilation of.
