I was going to say that i don't know if the best part of that was that you managed to keep Cop Lady from killstealing the boss on your first attempt, or that you did it only so you could throw away the boss kill exp just to make Ashe suffer, but it's definitely the fact that you threw away the boss kill exp just to make Ashe suffer.

I got you.
Here's something that really bugs me about the writing in this game.

Claude: Yours truly was recently recognised as a legitimate child of House Riegan. They possess one of the Heroes' Relics too, though I've yet to see it.
Byleth: [Just recently? / You haven't seen it?]
Claude: I was raised by my father. House Riegan is on my mother's side of the family.

Rhea: But it was not only her divine protection that shielded you, was it? You are just as skilled as I had hoped.
Byleth: [My students deserve the praise. / I still have much to learn.]
Rhea: There is no need for modesty.

Something like two thirds of the dialogue options in the game are like this, though there are some times where your choice gets you a single changing response line before immediately swerving back onto the single track. For all the lavishness of the production of this thing, it's alarmingly cheap at times, especially where voice acting is concerned. For another example; I feel like they would have had the budget to, for example, have lines that use actual pronouns for Byleth instead of going out of their way to always call them "Professor" or Jeralt to call them "child" or whatever. In a way it's neat that you don't arbitrarily gender Byleth but on the other hand for all the pronoun avoidance and "choose your form" wording they sure do still lock you into one set of romances or the other and keep you from the gender-locked classes which exist for some reason.

Anyway. Y'all're doing fine at this, honestly. But remember where you're posting. We will not suffer suboptimal play quietly.

Keldulas

I don't have a problem with the majority of the cast calling the MC "Professor". It's a fairly decent way of remaining neutral.

I don't like the instance with Jeralt's voice-acting remaining generic like that. He's one voice actor to have to rearrange lines for and whatever, and he should have a more personal touch.

Well, that's part of raising children. Sometimes you just gotta yell at them.

Oh, Ignatz has a mighty thirst. It's kind of hilarious.

Annnnd yeah, prepare to have a lot of C supports not being very supportive. They usually get better.... usually.

Leonie doesn't need bows, you can make her pretty good at just stabbing if you prefer. The later-game bow classes are very good, though.

You can pet the cats, if you have the paid dlc.

It might be easier to recruit children if you don't tell them to die if they don't agree on the first attempt :v:

As you noticed, you can enter pretty much anyone in the tournaments. You can cheese some of them pretty hard by sending bulky motherfuckers like Hilda to casually roll over squishy sword people and such.

And "Boar prince" is Felix's uhhh affectionate nickname for Dimitri.

Tea Parties are - see if you can spot my very subtle repeating pattern here - a good and charming idea in the abstract to add flavour to the game and boost the relationship-building angle but in practice just clunky and vestigial and a bit of a waste of time. Usually it filters down into an educated guessing game where you use your various knowledge of your garbage children to choose topics that will interest them, but it's also full of swerveballs like

The prompt here was "I wanna know more about you!".

vilkacis
Feb 16, 2011

You should buy more batallions! They give stat boosts and sometimes very good abilities. And i think one of your kids (Marianne?) has one that gives the "Stride" ability, you should check out what that does some time.

With the optional battles, they often take place in the same places (the way it recycles maps is one of the big complaints about this game), but there are some different configurations of enemies so it's not always the same bandits on the same map. Also if you just want to kill things, you can cut out the optional battles if they turn out not to be very interesting, i don't think anyone will mind since the optional ones don't have any kind of story or character to them.

Oh yeah, magic and weapons hit different stats! The Def stat reduces physical damage taken and the Res stat reduces magic. Knights tend to have high def, as you noticed, but low res. Mages usually tank magic pretty well but fold to punches.

Avo is avoid. Heavier weapons usually reduce your ability to dodge. Heavier magic does too (however that works).

I remember seeing something about the translation of those options being iffy or hard to get right or something, resulting in the English version being more random than the original. Don't remember the source, though.

The Death Knight! Absolute motherfucker. The thing about him is, it's not just that he has insane stats (relative to this point in the game at least), but also that they put him on terrain that gives him +40 Avoid, and he has a weapon with a frankly stupid amount of Crit on it. On top of that, he gets the important special boy ability the game doles out to people it really wants you not to be able to approach tactically, which makes him immune to statuses and take I think only 10% damage from Gambits. And he has Counterattack, so he cannot be outranged. It's too much poo poo. It speaks to something else I broadly dislike about latter-day Fires Emblem; they really like to give you a ton of tactical options and then suddenly invalidate them more or less any time they'd really be useful in a key battle. And okay he's supposed to basically be an early-game superboss, it's not bad in and of itself that he's so difficult to kill here, but, man, it's like they have no faith in their ability to balance their game. And, I mean, when FE9 wanted to make a point about this kind of an enemy being a very bad idea to fight, they just said gently caress it and made him outright invincible, like, actually in-universe. That probably wasn't even necessary because FE9 plays the numbers far straighter than Three Houses but they did it anyway because they had a grip on this whole concept!

Of course, you can still kill him anyway, if you know what the hell you're doing (or you're willing to send wave after wave of your own men to die at his feet until he reaches his kill limit). To do this for "real", without casualties, does require a little galaxy braining and a little luck, and maybe a few Divine Pulses, because your options are Gambits (which he cannot counter, but will do pathetic damage and won't activate their other tactical effects on him) or direct attacks, which you can mitigate a little but you have a lot of people you need to not die.

Lysithea is uniquely qualified for the job of taking him down because of her magic repertoire; Luna isn't very accurate but ignores enemy resistance. She actually has another spell that's even better for this job but it's basically impossible for her to have this early in the game. But, when she takes that shot, she better not miss, because she's uniquely unqualified to take literally any damage, let alone a Death Knight crit. I think it's possible to have an anti-cavalry weapon at this point, that's another good idea. My own preference is to pull stunts like noticing if he ever counters with a crit, using Divine Pulse, and finagling moves so that the random number used to give him his crit goes to me instead, because gently caress you Death Knight.

Your reward for bothering with all this is a Dark Seal, an item which unlocks a unique class which purports to specialise in Dark Magic. This is unbelievably stupid, because there are three units in the entire game actually capable of learning dark magic (because magic lists are innate to each unit and are unaffected by class with a single, irrelevant, exception), and two of them are women, and the dark mage class is gender-locked to men, also the one man is Hubert, who can't be recruited away from red team, so what the gently caress, game. The class doesn't even really do much for dark magic, you can cast the exact same poo poo in any other magic class, all it gets is a unique mastery skill (which also has no special attachment to dark magic). The whole affair is profoundly weird. I'd love to corner the designer behind this and enquire politely.

In conclusion, Lysithea.

Keldulas
Mar 18, 2009
Not only does the class not really do anything, there's also the massive opportunity cost of not leveling as a mage and getting that skill on mastery.

There's a combat art for Lances that's effective against horses (Knightkneeler) that most of your lance people can at C rank. If you absolutely need to get the full four Dark Seals, you can whittle the Death Knight down with Gambits, then Rally Strength and probably Dexterity too, then position your character for the maximum personal abilities (Sylvain deals +2 damage if a woman is next to him, Hilda gives men +3 damage if she's next to them), you might get a kill on him.

On the other hand, if you're playing on Casual, you can just throw bodies at him to manipulate the RNG, as demonstrated here. Pro stratz! And exactly what the Death Knight deserves.

Minor DLC spoilers, no plot stuff: The Death Knigth even shows up on the second DLC map, for no discernable reason except fanservice. Even he seems not entirely sure what he's doing here. And he's not even the weirdest guest star.

Frankly I'm surprised they never patched out the gender class locks, or removed them as part of the DLC or something. They feel very out of place, and it wouldn't surprise me if they only existed due to lack of dev time.

Hey I only got a couple of the C listers mulched <> all the important people survived.

The fact that this game is so good makes the bizarre choices that much more obvious. I dont regret killing death knight and I'll continue to kill him because he's a coward and I dont respect him, but to make the unlockable bonus class so useless is like how though

Cloacamazing!

Too cute to be evil
The second unlockable bonus class (which you need the first class for as well as a second Dark Seal) at least has a decent mastery skill. It's better than what the regular mage class gets at least.

The true purpose of the Dark Mage class and its follow-up is of course to give Hubert the class path he needs. Which is why on the only route where he's playable, you get one less Dark Seal than on the others.

I got you.
Three Houses is, characteristically, a collection of individually pretty good ideas which just happen to have absolutely no synergy. Fortunately, the most prominent of these ideas is basically just a wall of really good character writing, since at some point they figured out that since they've got this huge cast they may as well try and lean a bit on the characterization side of things, especially when they finally got a writing team and budget up to the task.

Keldulas
Mar 18, 2009
It's kind of funny how not only is Dark Mage just kind of useless/pointless and it stops or delays you from getting Mage's Fiendish Blow, the follow-up class is actively worse in pretty much every way for any mage that can actually use it, it's fantastic.

TheGreatEvilKing
Mar 28, 2016

The poison skill is very situationally useful for fighting monsters.

Dark Bishop isn't bad.

Everything else about it sucks, they really should have had it be gender-neutral and teach the characters luna or something.

Keldulas
Mar 18, 2009
The problem with Dark Bishop is basically the exact same as Dark Mage, opportunity cost and lack of benefit. A character as a Dark Bishop isn't a Warlock with Tomefaire and doubled black magic (admittedly this skill helps 3 characters and that's it). Nor are they a Bishop with extra juice on their healing (hello, super physic for Lindhardt). Even if the ladies could get Dark Bishop, they largely wouldn't want to. The mastery skill being self-healing based is also super pointless.

A Dark Bishop gets Fiendish Blow and Lifetaker to play with. The first one, a character really should have that themselves by this point, and the 2nd is nifty but requires melee range.

Granted, this is probably the least appropriate thread to talk crunch in, but eh.... the point came up at least.

I will say it's funny to see 'gently caress you, dogpile' be a valid tactic for the Knight here on Casual. I loved that you rewound only for Lysithea, only to subsequently sacrifice someone else to burn the numbers. If you see this, in the future Lorenz could've stabbed someone else and that still would've changed the numbers to allow Lysithea another hit chance.

The multiple fish thing is a recurring event (rarely). If you save bait for those events, you can probably get enough fish to last the entire game just in one sitting. But there are other events that get you better fish, too.

If you take too long in the tournaments, you'll lose even if it was going favourably. Good news is you don't have to pick someone who's good with the weapon they're using, you can just pick someone with good stats. A high spear rank helps with spears (you get buffs like +10 hit rate, +5 crit rate or whatever when you level up the skill) but if you have someone who's really fast and strong it's probably a better option to just send them in and wreck shop.

And you absolutely did need to die that realistically, it's what you get for falling for a cop :colbert:
