ShortyMR.CAT posted:Spider eat the mosquitoes near me! SPiders are A OK My apartment building is infested with roaches (I’m poor, I don’t have a choice). I was trying to fix my disposal and discovered that there is a population of tiny spiders helping me decimate the roach population in my apartment. Thanks for the assist, guys and gals! Makes me optimistic that the pesticide I use is not toxic to the spiders when they eat the roaches who have eaten the bait. I was kinda worried about it. https://youtu.be/gEMPLrWh35g https://youtu.be/rLw-9dpHtcU https://youtu.be/CNrF0JbDVc8 https://youtu.be/9qw3lkpa5lY https://youtu.be/KxM_cag99nU I can’t find a decent mini documentary of the ant mimicking spiders that someone mentioned in, I think, the cute thread, but here is a male ant mimic spider. https://youtu.be/qsIqyhJDu1A The males’s chelicarae are held out in front of their face and kept together so that they resemble an ant’s butt, so that it looks to predators as if it is a venomous ant carrying a fallen comrade. The females just look like ants, with them holding up and waving around their front legs so that they look like an ant’s antennae. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrmaplata_plataleoides quote:By mimicking the ants, they are able to stay close to them, thus gaining protection from predators since weaver ants taste bad and have a painful bite. Mimicry is also achieved by stealing from the ant brood and absorbing the smell of the colony I thought they hung out with the ants and picked them off when they were hungry, but apparently that is not the case. Edit: I think I might be confusing the weaver ant mimic with another ant mimicking spider, since this male’s [strike]mandibles[/strike] [strike]front legs [/strike] chelicarae look like an ant’s face. https://youtu.be/KAJzNNxT8Q8 Here’s a video of one eating. But I’m actually just posting it because of the first line in the video description. https://youtu.be/htQObRCRRyQ Just huge Jews, like real ants. And here is a male bathing, I think. https://youtu.be/qguwfezeUQY And yes, I absolutely remember this spider because I thought it had an antbutt face. Ralph Hurley posted:Sort of clickbait-ish but here is a series of macro photos showing that many tarantulas have cute fuzzy kitty toes. Damnit. I just dashed these pictures to post here. These guys/gals are just mad because they accidentally wandered onto me while I was outside, and now that they are inside, they can’t catch that glowing red thing. https://youtu.be/vyG7U9PIlyM Seriously, the tiny black and white jumping spiders around my area forget about me, the scary human, if I pull out a laser pointer for them to chase.

Life sucks but this spider’s great. https://youtu.be/pp2TqFu0heM And since I can’t tell if the spider watching Lucas is a really well done animation, here’s another video with real spiders. https://youtu.be/ru_EXyYHGB4 Oh yeah. redshirt posted:I walked through many spiderwebs this afternoon and for that I am sorry. That’s their fault for putting them somewhere a bumbling human may walk through. We are right to be scared of spiders since their bites hurt and are sometimes dangerous. That should make us leave them alone so that they can eat a bunch of bugs that bother us. But we are capable of a higher level of thought, so we can also enjoy watching the ones we don’t hate. I hate brown recluses because I’ve been bitten by them multiple times, since my old house has set empty for several years, so they were everywhere, and had to go on antibiotics every loving time. So any that are stupid enough to be spotted where I am now will die. Every other spider is welcomed, cause they will eat recluses or their corpses after I kill recluses. I have a picture of my bathroom barn weaver spider eating one I pushed towards him when he was starving. He’s a good boy. He hides every time he notices me, which is right and proper for a creepy looking but beneficial spider to do. He’s also taking up a hidey hole that used to be a recluse hidey hole. I’m broke, so can’t buy my cats nice things. I think I’m making sure the spider is relaxed and happy because I don’t get to spoil my cats rights now.

CaptainSarcastic posted:I handle spiders barehanded with some frequency, and I've never been bitten. Over the years the size I'm comfortable grabbing with my bare hands has increased, to the point that now the deciding factor is whether it's so big that closing my hand around it could hurt it. That said, Oregon doesn't have much in the way of actually dangerous spiders. Rabid wolf spiders (Rabidosa rabida) are pretty huge. Also, not rabid or aggressive, just super fast so kinda scary. Unfortunately, my cats really like playing with them because they are so fast. This spring, there was a dead one in front of my shower that had to be at least 2 inches long. Just a huuuuuge bitch. And I only looked up what they are this summer. I just think their name is funny. Edit: and I just spotted this lady starting a funnel in the corner. She’s a pretty big girl. She decided that she did not appreciate the piece of cardboard I put between herself and my cats, though, so came out even further into plain sight where one of my cats decided it would be very fun to play with her. So she is now back outside where there are no house cats who will torture her for funsies. Also there is more to eat out there for a spider. I thought about taking her to meet the male in my bathroom, but she’d probably just kill him and take over the funnel. And I’m guessing on gender based on abdomen to cephalothorax ratio. I could be completely wrong and maybe they aren’t even the same species or something. Bored fucked around with this message at 11:51 on Oct 6, 2023 |
