Amsterdam:  It's interesting because its origins are murky. The 3 X's are not an XXX for the red light district, it's probably three st. andrews crosses. In sign language, the gesture for Amsterdam is making three crosses with your arms. I was told there that the three crosses stood for the bridges across the Amstel, which supposedly is another origin story.
