I tried the earlier AoWs and they were very Might And Magicish, and I just don’t find that as fun as more free form 4Xs. It's still very Might And Magicish, but less so than the previous iterations. There's more complex city building and it's possible to win via megaprojects, but the focus is the tactical combat.

Yep. At least I did that last time I played Alpha Centauri, which was like 15 years ago? The option to make custom factions is pretty cool too. e: beaten
