Hitler built the autobahn and people still drive on it.

Lowtax can be a piece of poo poo but people will still post here but doesn't mean they agree with him.

These are absolutely comparable scenarios and you are a smart person for making this post.

In fairness to the wifebeating shitstain, that's a temporary restraining order. IIRC, aren't those granted basically 100% of the time, on the basis of "oh poo poo, a kid might be in trouble so let's do this while we sort it all out?" No judge wants to be the one who denied a restraining order request and then a kid goes missing/is found in a ditch.

Please don't take this post as actually defending the horrid piss-stain on the face of the world that is Lowtax. Just a poke at accuracy.

the what now

We had a period in the late 00s where a set of admins were banning for punctuation errors, not using periods / caps, etc etc. They would also ban you for asking why they were banning people. These same people were often put in charge of banhammer periods where every single infraction was bannable, including things that would be laughed at today re: bannability.

These admins were supposedly female. If this is the same group I'm remembering and I'm not confusing my events, it was Ozma, Icequeen, and a few others I don't remember. Eventually people bitched enough about it to Wifebeater that he proceeded to come in and fake-demod them and give them "BANNED" font text, but it read "MENSES" instead over their usual avatars. He then proceeded to ban everyone for the same bullshit, IIRC, and eventually gave them back their mod powers anyway.

You can read more about that stupid-rear end period in the SAclopedia reference for Shark Week 2007 : https://forums.somethingawful.com/dictionary.php?act=3&topicid=2015

Here's an announcement really showing its age... posted:

Welcome to Shark Week 2007! After reading your complaints and suggestions, we mods here at the Something Awful Forums have decided to act upon them and try to improve the forums by implementing them! For the next week or so, we'll be trying out a new / modified moderation style during Shark Week 2007. The following changes are now in effect:

1. No female mods or admins are able to ban or probate anybody. Since the overwhelming rage of forum users seems to be directed at the females running the place, we are neutering them and stripping them of all power.

2. Reporting people may only be done by Platinum members, in an attempt to weed out the false whining done by newly registered sensitive faggots.

3. "Common sense" rules are returning. This means that, like in the "glory days" of the forums, we will rely less on a list of rules and more on common sense and the decisions of the mods. The all-male mods.

4. Probations apparently don't work and don't send any message, so we will be moving more towards outright bans, like in the golden days.

That said, enjoy Shark Week 2007 and please use common sense!

I joined in 06 and people were constantly decrying the decline of the forums and making big drama-filled banme posts even then so trying to identify a specific period where SA "went wrong" seems like a fruitless endeavor.

SA went wrong when they put it on the internet. I've heard that thing makes you stupid.
