One thing many successful (is in keeping it going long term without repercussions) abusers have is that they can be persuasive, charismatic, and have their techniques for hiding their true faces down to a fine art. Some are better at seeing through the mask for various reasons, be it intuition or experience. Others will be fooled at first. What's important once the truth is seen is to learn from it, to recognise the signs more quickly in future.
