Incredibly serious allegations have been made about SomethingAwful's owner Lowtax, and at the moment there is a lot of confusion about what this means for SA. Is Lowtax gonna sell it? Does anybody even want to buy it? Will he try to continue things the same as before? If he does will anybody want to stick around? Obviously there is still a ton of resolutions that might come out of this, but given none of us know ANYTHING at the moment, you might want to consider/discuss options you would like to be aware of if a worst case scenario happened and SA (and thus, of course, FIGHT ISLAND) was to disappear: whether that be Discord, another forum software, Reddit, The Board, DVDR or any of a million other options. Please again keep in mind that all this popped up basically in the last few hours and nobody knows what is happening yet, and nothing been spoken about in terms of replacement places/migration points is anything but discussion at the moment. On a completely personal standpoint, I'm interested in a replacement for SA (or preferably a change of ownership of current SA) as a whole and not specifically just FIGHT ISLAND. I'm also wondering if it wouldn't be a good time to step back from moderating (this decision might be taken away from me sooner rather than later in any case) since it is starting to demand more of my time than I'm actually capable or comfortable of giving it, at least in the short term. Trying to create a brand new forum just for FI right at the moment is probably premature, and runs the risk of fracturing a bunch of inter-connected communities. That isn't to say that people can't go ahead and do it if they're keen and have a lot of interest, of course, but I was thinking more in terms of making people aware of currently existing alternatives or even holding spaces like discord while waiting for something covering more of the traditional SA structure to get set-up.

Check out the Let's Play archive, I don't know if they still do it but back when I did SSLPs they had set up a handy archiver that would hunt through a thread and pull out all your specific posts including images and zip them up. Until they made the waffleimages script, the LP Archive was the only complete record I had of my own threads. You should be able to apply it to any thread on the forums, I'm pretty sure.

Just want to remind everybody that our kokoro wish is that all these offsites/discords etc serve basically as safety nets, and something is accomplished or resolved that allows SA to continue on without Lowtax (basically how it's run for like 95% of the time for the last decade as far as I can tell). Bread N Roses appears to be a popular choice for a wide range of posters from multiple subforums and there's absolutely nothing wrong given the point of this thread for people to be offering up alternatives/safety nets in the eventuality something does happen to SA. Nobody has to join up with any of them if they don't want to, and if they do they don't have to stick around either. People are looking for places where they can keep in touch with their buddies, that's the most important thing for a lot of people at the moment which is why so many discords are being offered around as well: they don't replace the SA experience but they at least let people avoid being left in the dark about where everybody is in a worst case scenario re: these forums. The only person to be angry at in this situation is Lowtax, for putting the community/forums in this state in the first place.

I'm super-loving relieved by this news. The idea of Lowtax causing the death of these forums after he's been absentee and uninvolved for so long was incredibly grating (and yes, I know this is the least important thing to be concerned about in the grander scheme of the monstrous things he did). I suppose there is still a chance this doesn't all go through but for now I'm hopeful SA just gets to continue on without him. The safety nets of the Discords, Breadnroses, various other pre-existing forums like The Board and DVDR etc were all there and for that I'm grateful, but it wouldn't have been the same.

Jeffrey says in their announcement that nothing is signed but an agreement has been reached, and they'll try to answer questions tonight to make things a bit clearer. My assumption (and this is purely my assumption) is that Jeffrey is buying SA, and that Lowtax is basically done having anything but a historic connection to it once that is done. We'll know more when Jeffrey gives us more information, but I think it's been made pretty powerfully clear by basically everybody who uses these forums that they're not interested in an SA where Lowtax is still part of it in any way.

I'll simply add in my own 2 cents that all my experiences with Jeffrey have been great. That doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't any skeletons in the closet or maybe he's a horrific monster to other people or something, but I have nothing to judge him on other than my own interactions and they've only ever been positive.

I'll discuss it with the admins and other mods when it seems a more appropriate time. Right now seems like there is a ton more important stuff to deal with for the forums, and when things quiet down a little we'll try to figure out what if any changes need to be made. I'd be happy to keep moderating, but real world stuff means I might be absent for significant chunks of time and it wouldn't be fair to leave Junpei handling everything alone, or bringing in some poor IK who suddenly finds themselves basically doing mod work anyway.

On topic for the thread's original purpose: Jeffrey is keeping the site updated through forums announcements about the progress of the sale of SA so we can be done with Lowtax for good. When that goes through, then SA's future is secured. If it all falls apart for whatever reason, there are multiple Discords available as safety nets until/if a new replacement site can be found: bookmark https://goondiscordnetwork.com/ for a handy directory of SA-affiliated Discords.

Do NOT use this thread to snipe at other posters, which is what got it shut down in the first place.
