This day, 51 years ago, a black transgender woman/drag person threw the first stone at straighty, kicking off the Stonewall riots.

Marsha P Johnson is my hero.

Here are two videos about the riot.
One gives a broader narrative about what happened, and the other features queer people who were actually there during the riot.

One of the intresting aspects about the riot is that, contrary to popular narrative, the queer people there didn’t fight for what was a beloved gay bar.
The Stonewall Inn was a horrible dumb. Not grimey, it was gross. It was run by the maffia, through one -I kid you not- Fat Tony. The admission fee was extotion, the drinks were overpriced and watered down. At the time there were other, less wretched, gay bars, but queer folk still went to the Stonewall Inn because it had something no other gay bar in New York had: a dance floor.

At that time there was a law that made it illegal to dance in public with a person of the same gender. So gay bars would just not have a dance floor. But the Stonewall Inn had its maffia connections, which translated to having cop connections. So they always managed to clear their dance floor right before a police raid took place. This made the Stonewall Inn the only place in New York where queer people could experience this particular freedom at the time.

Last night I was watching something and realized the trope of small town female cops being coded as lesbian. Made me go ‘huh’.

People never, ever talk about the rockette dance line during the riot.

Was it Onward

No, I think it was a no or one line role on Doom Patrol actually. More of a visual confirmation of the trope.
What is ‘interesting’ about the trope is that there is a subtext that these women are admirable because they exhibit traditional male forms of strength: solitary and independent, averse to displaying emotion and vulnerability.
What makes them lesbian coded is short haircuts and a boxy uniform hiding traditionally female curves.
I don’t really know why they are a trope; what purpose they are intended to serve

The Stonewall Lesbian(s)

“A rather tough lesbian was busted in the bar and when she came out of the bar she was fighting the cops and trying to get away. And the harder she fought, the more the cops were beating her up and the madder the crowd got.“

In 1969, it was illegal not only to having any same sex relationships, but for people to cross dress. Lesbians would be arrested if they weren’t wearing at least three items of women’s clothing, which is why many butch dykes would be thrown into jail after police raids on the underground gay bars, such as the Stonewall.

We may never know who threw the first brick, but maybe the real first brick throwers were the friends we made along the way.

Historical inquiry results in the first projectile having been either a brick, a rock from the nearby park, a molotov cocktail, or a shot glass.
Regardless, they had a gay old time.

Apparently this forum has premium quality costumer service? I failed to follow the rules when making a post, and no less than two mods sprang to my aid.
I made a pledge to donate as soon as Jeffrey has control of the forum. If it is possible for you to do so too, I think that would be a great thing to do <3

The black trans community who strongly over the way and led to progress in LGBT achievement and their rights should be celebrated and it's embarrassing that today is not a national holiday. Happy Stonewall Day!

Imagine the gonads it took for these black trans people!

I am a white, (with hormone therapy) cis presenting male. A large part of my social interactions are about fretfully trying to be passing as male and straight. But every day I look to the black trans community for aspiration and inspiration, and I find it.

Happy Stonewall Day!

I know the recent historical fiction film that came out absolutely sucks

It’s only a brick if thrown by white gay men, otherwise it’s a sparkling shot glass.

Black transgender women are murdered at alarming rates. They have a bleak life expectancy between 35 and 37 years old, according to Julian K. Glover, an African American Studies doctoral student at Northwestern University and receive an average annual income of $10,000 — well below the poverty line. According to the Human Rights Campaign at the time of press, at least ten of them have been murdered already this year, and many more fear for their lives.

Black transgender women also deserve credit for the state of LGBTQ progress today.

Here's a look at why we owe Pride month to them and how we can all be better allies in a dangerous landscape for black LGBTQ people.

Seems I cant make this link work.
Anyway, this is Peppermint. She is a Black trans woman drag queen.
She gained fame through RuPaul’s Drag Race, but as you can imagine, there is more to a Black trans woman drag queen than being reality tv person. She has her own youtube channel (Miss Peppermint) with videos of her performances and also videos talking about her life. I don’t know if her videos are for everyone, but you can always check it out and decide for yourself.

Fun fact: one of the reasons a gross, poorly-maintained, mafia-run, scammy bar was so popular is that other gay bars/private clubs were WILDLY classist and racist. The Stonewall Inn was one of the few places where gay and trans POC were accepted and could form a community within a queer space. A lot of the kids who had been kicked out and disowned by their families would hang out there simply to be off the streets for the night, which is in fact how Sylvia Rivera met Marsha; Marsha took Sylvia under her wing and taught her how to pass better, helped her find housing and work, etc.
Boystown in Chicago has much the same problem. Once a neighborhood full of punks and all kinds of gender-nonconforming/queer/trans people, especially drag queens, it soon became a queer Mecca. As gay white men moved in, they slowly drove up the cost of living in the neighborhood until the only people who could afford to live there were high-earning gay white male couples. Who promptly started calling the cops on the queer POC (primarily Black) kids who were literally coming and going from the only gay youth center in the city. We just had a Pride Without Prejudice March about it, and a LOT of queens of color shared their stories of discrimination, humiliation, and assault from the gay men and bars in the area.
If anyone feels like donating, the Brave Space Alliance is committed to an intersectional approach to the queer struggle in our community here.

Also, has anyone heard of the Compton Cafeteria Uprising in 1966? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compton%27s_Cafeteria_riot

Thanks for this thread! Happy Stonewall Day!

I learned a lot from your post!

Also from the wikipedia article you posted:

quote:

The incident began when a transgender woman resisted arrest by throwing coffee at a police officer. It was followed by drag queens pouring into the streets, fighting back with their high heels and heavy bags.
