I'm not nearly into photography as I used to be but I cannot understate how hard Kodak has fallen. In the 1900s they made cameras accessible to the middle class and churned out beautiful film. Their brand was synonymous with American photography. When I was selling cameras in the 2000s, they had been completely overtaken by the Japanese brands. This was before smartphones, so buying a digital camera was usually considered a big purchase. Most customers just wanted something simple, reliable, and fast. I just remember a bunch of slow, cheap, lovely Kodaks that nobody wanted. They leaned hard into "Let's relive the glory of our early years by making CHEAP cameras." and it did not pay off. There's a big difference between a cheap mechanical camera that's lacking bells and whistles in the 1900s and a cheap digital camera in an era where consumers expect autofocus and lenses with moving parts. So what you got was a bunch of lovely cameras with slow software, slow lenses, and an overall worse experience for the user. Kodak just operated under the assumption that cheap=good. I vividly remember some of their cameras being so poo poo that they weren't even locked up, just hanging up near the register in clamshell packages.
