I can't remember what my first seasonal show was...don't even remember exactly when I switched from just watching things that I happened to find on DVD or were on tv to more actively following what was currently airing. Looking at what was airing I had definitely started paying attention by 2007 because I watched quite a few of that year's shows either when they aired or soon after. e: tbh thinking back I don't know how much of that was me becoming more clued into new shows and how much was new stuff becoming easier to find & watch (& how much was getting faster internet lol) Everything Burrito fucked around with this message at 07:45 on Jul 14, 2020 |

My earliest exposure was in the mid 80s watching Voltron on tv as a kid, and when I visited my grandma who had the Disney channel which aired the Unico movies. Those movies sort of blew my mind because I loved the animation style but had no idea why it was so different since I was like, 6. I watched the first one on Crunchyroll last year and tbh it holds up pretty well, still pretty fun to watch. I was just stuck with what came on tv for years and even then was picky enough I refused to watch Tenchi when it was on Cartoon Network In college the timing was just right that I could buy a lot of stuff used on dvd because it was right in that early 2000s boom when all sorts of random stuff got licensed, and there were a lot of used video stores around campus that always had anime. I also was dating a guy who had way more disposable income than me and was friends with a guy who ran an import store so through him I watched a few vhs fansubs and some other less accessible stuff I probably wouldn't have been able to see otherwise. A lot of porn too Our tastes didn't always align well and sitting through entire shows I didn't really like to begin with really burned me out on some stuff, but I'd go along with it because he wanted to watch things together and he was the one buying so he got to pick. We marathoned the entirety of Fushigi Yuugi over a couple of weekends and by the end I couldn't imagine hating a show more than I hated that show lmao (to be fair I liked it at the start but it got really old really fast). Once I found manga online and started reading scans I watched a lot less anime though. There was a several year break where I watched a few shows I bought on dvd but manga was a lot easier to download than videos so that was the bulk of what I viewed that was unlicensed. I'm pretty sure one of the factors that led to me following shows more seasonally was when my parents got dsl and it was suddenly way easier to watch (tiny, grainy) videos online.

amazon has been pulling BL books for a while now. the person behind the SuBLime twitter at one point guessed that it was people reporting stuff because the takedowns were really inconsistent, and amazon gave them absolutely zero explanations.

Wark Say posted:Like the vibe I got from the rewatch felt more like P.A. Works wanted to make like a Parks & Rec or The Office-sorta thing but had to compromise. That kind of explains why I bounced off of it a bit since I've never liked that sort of show. I watched the first episode and didn't *dislike* it but also felt like I'd seen all I wanted to watch and didn't keep going.

"valid criticism" and "everyone who likes this design (of an adult woman) is a pedophile" are two entirely different things and only one of them is what I've been seeing in the discourse (hint it's not the first one).

Captain Invictus posted:apparently kissmanga exploded a few hours ago, I doubt anyone still used it but it does make me wonder if there is a method to back up bookmarks on mangadex easily, like an export option or anything, just so I've got a list of series if I need it if mangadex also explodes I've been using mangago's lists and tagging features to keep track of not only what I'm reading but what I've read in the past plus ratings, content tags, and even whether or not they're licensed and/or if I bought them and I'm going to be so bummed when they eventually get nuked and I lose all of that. I have no idea how I'd preserve it either, other than transferring it all manually to a spreadsheet or something and I've got like 3k titles on there if I combined everything so that's a little more work than I really want to tackle.

The story seems intriguing so far, but the animation style and fight scenes are spectacular. oh I remember watching a pv for this a while back, it looked pretty neat e: just finished watching it, neat fights and really gorgeous background art The little "making of" clip at the end for some of the animation effects and ending drawing was fun also Everything Burrito fucked around with this message at 05:40 on Aug 24, 2020 |

I think some of that just ends up in the catch-all threads, like I've posted quite a few reviews in the shoujo thread as the mood struck but the downside of that is they get buried fairly quickly. If you make a thread specifically for reviews even if you're the only one who regularly participates at least the option is there and you can potentially get some feedback/discussion vs the pmf thing where there's no chance for that at all.

if you branch out a bit, smoking is fairly common in BL manga (which is also aimed at an entirely different audience) because it's still kind of a visually sexy thing and you can do stuff to make connections between characters -- for instance the "light a cigarette from the other character's lit cigarette" scene that's used to build sexual tension and serves as a kiss substitute . It's a small plot device element I imagine will linger for a while yet although one thing that happens commonly is a character who starts out smoking will quit by the end.

Strange Quark posted:Lol I didn’t know this was a common thing requires that both characters smoke so you see it more with some types of stories than others, like stuff with yakuza characters or older salarymen, hosts, etc. that sort of setting. also put to very good use if there's some antagonism between the characters, like I'm not familiar enough with those Hypmic characters I posted the gif of to say if that's for sure their relationship (antagonistic I mean) but just my surface impression is that they have that sort of push-pull tension between them and the cigarette "kiss" was pretty effective fanservice.
