people posting about their first experiences with anime reminded me of this chestnut from back in the day

Back in I wanna say 1999 or 2000, on a very basic craigslist-esque site called Bartertown where people traded MTG cards and warhammer figures, I traded a bunch of shittily-painted warhammer fantasy figures for a bunch of "random" anime VHS tapes and playstation 1 games. I got Alundra, Thousand Arms, Legend of Legaia, and a couple other games in the trade, as well as VHS tapes of Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, an anime with busty cop ladies with a very 80s or 90s aesthetic that iirc started with a bunch of people storming the precinct and brutally mercing a bunch of people? I think that was the one, I may be conflating that with a different series though. And a tape of some old mech anime with women pilots and the biggest drat thighs on a mech suits I've ever seen. and lastly a bootleg VHS tape of some sailor moon hentai that just had "SAILOR MOON" scrawled on it that I gave to my sister because she was super into sailor moon and I thought she might want it. Mom was not happy with the guy sending porn to children, and also wasn't too thrilled by the lady cop one that had people getting brutally murdered on screen, so I had to go through her whenever I wanted to trade with people on Bartertown after that.

Oh and he also included the entirety of the Gargoyles cartoon in gloriously lovely 144p on over four dozen CDRs, which, like, okay sure why not

I hope you have enjoyed my story

The cop one sounds like angel cop

I watched toonami and stuff but didn't really get started until I found a blogspot with terrible quality rmvbs that I could download on my 56k connection. This is how I watched flcl, the original Hellsing, Afro Samurai and GaoGaiGar, and probably a bunch of other series I don't remember.

The anime is quite good, it's a romcom that ends quite definitively and covers all the emotional fallout that entails on top of being funny and creative

Speaking of 80s I started watching Moeru! Onii-san which is quite fun so far. The whole series is on youtube subtitled by a legend of fansubbing who has been around since the days of VHS fansubbing and came out of retirement for who knows what reason

Very hyped. And we IY fans aren't as alone as you might think. It's just that most of the fandom is dormant until new content arrives.

Super was just mentioned and DB is kind of the rare exception of a franchise that maintained popularity even when it got nothing new for a long time. I remember Attack on Titan was the hot new series everyone talked about in 2014 and then...nothing. It just faded away. Death Note was similar with everyone raving about it then trickling off right up until the Netflix adaptation came out which revived the fandom for a while and same for the manga oneshot.

I've been thinking about a series my GF got me into called Kyo Kara Maoh. That was another big anime that came and went. I'll always remember seeing Yuri (the MC of KKM) being listed as one of the favorite male characters in a Gundam Ace poll from 2005 or 2008 or something like that. Blew my mind. But nobody remembers KKM in 2020. Can't even watch it on Funi's website anymore.

Point is, Inuyasha was huge and beloved but everyone just wandered off because they figured it was over and done with. But now with a new series everyone is like "holy poo poo, I remember that show! I remember the early 2000s and being in high school! I can share it with my own children now."

Here's hoping it is good. Nothing wrong with feeding nostalgia if it's good. And I certainly do want more Inuyasha than I want more Naruto. Inuyasha went on too long as well but it had not so thoroughly poo poo the bed by the ending like Naruto did so I still have a lot of good will towards it.

All the kyo kara maoh fans ranked up into hardcore problematic decensored smut bl

I don't actually understand why people say the part 4 anime is bad

The part with the three fights glimg on at once was excruciating when it aired, and honestly a lot of the direction was just okay so I felt bored more than I did in any other part. Part 4 has a lot of good concepts but it failed to portray them in an engaging way for me.

Also I think Araki is better at enemy of the week style suspense and horror than the so-called slice of life town crap people seem to love so much

I haven't and probably won't until the part 6 anime finishes but I'll keep that in mind. I probably shouldn't let my dislike of the anime color my view of the work itself

it's technically not a ghibli movie, but miyazaki directed it. it's the best lupin movie and it isn't even close. it gets some flak from lupin purists because it makes Lupin into a noble hero instead of an antihero thief, but it's objectively so loving good you shouldn't mind that it feels more like a ghibli movie than a Lupin movie.

also I just looked it up and according to wikipedia, Spirited Away was the first film to gross $200 million worldwide before opening in North America, the film to finally overtake Titanic at the Japanese box office, the top-grossing film in the history of Japanese cinema, the second anime to win the Japan Academy Film Prize for Picture of the Year after Princess Mononoke, and the only anime to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and has a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. The notion that it isn't absolutely fantastic and a enormous critical/commercial success that defines the genre is a viewpoint held exclusively by internet-poisoned weebs on anime forums who can recite all the members of hololive from memory.

The past decade of cinema is proof enough that box office receipts aren't an indicator of quality
