I think what Invictus is thinking of and slightly mangling is the old idea that if a fan and author are in contact and the author later uses what appears to be the fan's ideas, the fan will be able to sue for plagiarism. This was usually brought up for why authors rarely acknowledged fanfiction or directly interacted with fans. (Of course this is completely outdated in the social media era where there's an open direct line of communication with most creators, for better or worse.) I used to think this was paranoid speculation until an encounter with an honest-to-god example of a wannabe creative type who was trying to organize a "campaign" against some writer for the incredibly original idea of a romantic comedy with two men, with the intent of "ruining her". People really do be crazy out there.
