Wow, the first game looks a great deal more dire than I remember it being. Acquiring and maintaining friendships in the first game was hard. I don't remember what The Sims 2 did with it, but friends were easier to come by in 3 & 4. I never had any of the expansions, so my houses were always a bizarre mismatch of furniture. There weren't a great deal of thematic sets to choose from.
