PAPER MARIO AND THE ORIGAMI KING - Out on switch July 17th 2020

Let’s be real, Paper Mario and the Origami King is definitely not the sequel to the Thousand year door we all hoped it would be, instead Orgami King is light breezy adventure game with an RPG puzzle elements thrown in, there is no EXP system, instead the game uses Coins and Confetti, and largely follows the same route planned out in Color Splash where battles are mostly optional, only this time the battles are unique puzzle games featuring rings where you have 20 seconds to align the enemy in the right way to kill them in one go, the bosses also seem to reverse this where you have to align the rings to reach the bosses to perform an attack maneuver. It seems interesting on the surface so I hope the puzzle aspects will carry the game. on it's own merits, this seems like a nice fun battle system, maybe shallow but fun nonetheless. but one thing this does do well is the exploration and world settings, which seem pretty awesome so far.

Here are some preview videos that features gameplay, the world and battle mechanics footage:-

However! This game seems to have a fun fantastic world, really funny characters and writing, funny set pieces and an absolutely wonderful sountrack, which will probably be the main draw of this game for most people. I’m excited to see what surprises are in store for us. And quite frankly, the paper aesthetics of the game are just flat out incredibly gorgeous. And it seems like they’ve really doubled down on the charm and world building and characters.

So what are your thoughts? Looking forward to a fun breezy adventure with Mario and friends? Hate/love the new battle system? Let’s discuss and when the game comes out talk and complain about the game and the events in it! I think overall this game will be a nice fun charming experience. Let’s fight over which Paper Mario game is the best, how this stacks up, etc.

Waaaahhh I wanted the thousand year door 2 waaaahhh:-

Listen, we all know. We want The Thousand Year Door part 2, sadly, as far as Mario goes, that’s not gonna happen, however, there is a wonderful new indie game that scratches that itch quite nicely and features the exact same addictive combat system, wonderful characters, great writing and a charming (if unpolished) aesthetic that is well worth your time and money by the name of ‘Bug Fables’, which can be found here:-

Look, I'm a pissbaby TTYD fanatic myself, so I understand where they're coming from, but trust me when I tell you that at some point certain fans can really sour newcomers views of a game with how they act.

Obviously the piece of media itself should be judged on it's own merit.

Origami King looks nice and here's to hoping it won't be a boring slog to play. Everything that's been revealed points to it being cool and good.

The worst thing about Bug Fables is that it's really, really slow and when you've completed the first chapter you've seen everything the game has to offer since all chapters follow the same structure and there is nothing new coming up later. 30+ hours repeating the same thing. The characters are nice and charming at first but they are very one-note. I'd say wait for a sale on that one, even though otherwise it's solid and scratches that TTYD itch.

drat dude, that's a shame, I just bought the game yesterday, and I'm a couple hours into it and so far I'm loving it quite a bit, I hope it doesnt sour on me the further I go in because so far I really am enjoying Bug Fables.

By all means continue, but if you’re losing touch with IPs or properties that make you happy because strangers were rude to you online... that seems like the problem is sticking your dick in that anthill in the first place instead of just playing the game or whatever and then posting about it here, where we have good mods like Video Games.

Massive 50 Question Video on the paper mario:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EWjKdcNSWA

I'm only 10 minutes in, they are only talking about the first third of the game, but one big thing is that they mention that while some battles are avoidable, most arent, so you still need to do a healthy amount of battling during the game. while you dont gain EXP, you will still HAVE to fight plenty of enemies. So I dont think you're gonna have the problem of 'lack of incentive' for battles since you wont have much of a choice anyways.

There’s a weird spectrum of reviewers who have very different views on how hard the battles are, some thing it’s easy, others think they’re hard, some think it’s annoying and some thing it’s fine so I think it depends on who you talk to.

I'm really disappointed I was looking forward to playing a new Paper Mario but the battle system being what it is is turning me off, I'm bad at puzzles and just looking at the boss fights makes my head hurt. It just sucks when a childhood favorite moves in a direction that you cant follow. An RPG is defined by its options and in this game you have none which means that this game is just puzzles and I just cant stand puzzles. The idea that your coin supply is used directly as a crutch is interesting but probably too cleaver for its own good. I'll watch a lets play some day of this and Color Splash if/when I have the time or inclination.

There are alternatives, the one that's released right now is 'Bug Fables' but there's a rather incredible looking one being developed currently called 'Loaf'

very interesting article from the creators of the game that lays out why they keep changing things and refusing to do what fans want them to do:-

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/features/interviews/paper-mario-origami-king

some key quotes:-

quote:

“Games are entertainment, so I want the people who play our games to say ‘Wow!’ My understanding is that if we want to give players these positive surprises, we can’t do exactly the same thing that’s been done before.”

Kensuke Tanabe, a Nintendo veteran who oversees several franchises including Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong, tells VGC he does pay attention to feedback from Paper Mario fans and said he hopes they approach the latest game with an open mind.

“Nintendo’s philosophy on game creation is that we don’t ignore casual players in creating our games,” he says. “This is also true for games such as those in the Metroid Prime series; games that at first glance look like they are only aimed at core gamers.

“With that in mind, what we’ve done in the Paper Mario series is to put a lot of work particularly into the puzzle solving elements of the games, so that they can also be enjoyed by core users.

“So, for example, in Paper Mario: The Origami King, players need to guess the weak points of bosses based on their characteristics and search for the solution to defeat them, otherwise they won’t be able to win these battles. This is an adventure game after all, so it wouldn’t be right if the battles didn’t also have some kind of puzzle solving element!”

He adds: “However, I do think it’s difficult to satisfy certain fans with the adventure game direction if they think of Paper Mario games as simply being RPGs. I hope that everyone will play this game with an open mind.”

Apparently there's a quote here that might hint at why they dont make characters like Goombella and stuff anymore, apparently it's some sort of forced internal restriction by nintendo:-

quote:

Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it’s no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe. That means that if we aren’t using Mario characters for bosses, we need to create original characters with designs that don’t involve the Mario universe at all, like we’ve done with Olly and the stationery bosses.

Yeah it's pretty clear from this that they're well aware about what fans want but they're operating on a completely different outlook and wont probably give the fans what they're expecting anytime soon.

In any case, the game should be playable soon so I'm looking forward to it!

I am now a couple hours into the game, I have passed the sewers, freed toad town and I am now on the way to the Red Streamer, this is my first paper mario game since the thousand year door and Mario & Luigi Bowsers inside story:-

I’m shocked to say, I actually really really love this game so far!

First, it’s really hard to not love the charm, writing, music and aesthetics of this game, the writing is funny and got some hard chuckles out of me so far, the toads and goombas and shy guys etc. are really funny and exude personality despite looking similar to each other. The game really sold me so far on the writing, this game got me smiling, chuckling and laughing from the first minute and hasn’t let up since.

Luigi Rules, Toads absolutely rule in this game, they’re super funny.

Also, the way they portray the origami and how the ‘Normal’ inhabitants react is genuinely creepy, this game really effectively sets up the threat.

The game’s music loving rocks, it’s really awesome. The aesthetics and graphics are fantastic. It’s really impossible to not be enchanted by the game.

I actually like the battle system! The mindset I’m approaching it is that essentially, you’re playing a game of Tetris, the ‘game’ is about lining up the characters in time, and the satisfaction of ‘line clearing’ them is the same good feeling like in Tetris. it’s not as involved as a traditional RPG, honestly even when I screwed up a couple of times it wasn’t that bad. You quickly snap in and out of battle quickly and the music is great so overall While it’s not as involved and in-depth as the other RPG’s if you’re a fan of Tetris or simple puzzles its a pretty fun casual system. I like it, some of the puzzles seemed tough but not getting them right isn’t as bad as some people make it out to be,

Overall, I’m very glad I got this game so far, it seems like a very fun breezy light adventure game with a simple-but-fun battle system and a charming world and a very funny, witty and sharply written story to casually play and experience. It’s not as deep and involved as the RPG’s are, but I’m in the mood for a light fun adventure and this game is so far delivering.

I recommend it so far! Once I’m further into the game I’ll see if the battle system holds up, but first impressions have me at a 9/10 so far!

I just finished the red streamer, so far the boss system is really good, I got a little confused at first when I first fought the Vollumental but after practicing it a couple times it at the VR battle practice room it became a lot more understandable, I will say though, I kinda wish they made opening the chests in a boss battle different, because you’re already in mid stride when you open them so it’s impossible to plan to take what’s in the chest afterwards since the rings reset after each turn.

So far my opinion of the game is unchanged, I really am enjoying it, now that I understand all the different battle systems and I’m enjoying them I am confident the rest of the game will be great.

I laughed out loud at the Cheap tourist trap scam the toads have set up for faithful Koopa troopas that hid the true actual danger dungeon for the vollumental lol

I’m glad the game lets you easily stomp weak enemies when you level up, it makes the refreshing enemies a lot less annoying.

I gotta say the Pink streamer section was definitely a low point for the game, the game was starting to lose me a little, however once I was past that point and moved on to the green streamer the game picked up massively again! I'm fighting the boss of the green streamer right now and this entire segment of the green streamer beginning to end is just loving awesome.

Shangri-Spa Toads Rule and that was super funny how they owned the minions, Kamek Rules, the thunder boss rules, the entire hype rear end fight to re-take the castle ruled (you better believe I helped the minions kill everyone :black101: , and the turn the game takes into legit horror (those stick figures man holy poo poo and Face Homonculus and all of boswers minions just shredded holy poo poo), also the boss is rad so far, this segment is so much better than the pink streamer.

the final slide puzzle was rear end difficult lol but eventually I got it

:qq: Olivia.... Thank you..... you're the greatest, thank you for the memories.... :qq:

I dont understand why people are hating on the ending, I thought it was perfectly good and appropriate to the themes of the game.

Olivia sacrificed herself to save the mushroom kingdom, the theme of the game is the acceptance of loss and living your life to the fullest with the time you have, we had this before with bob-omb and now we have it with olivia, Olivia had a wonderful time and had to say good bye to save everyone, I for one think this is a very nice disney-style way to sell a theme to kids, and much like any disney movie and nintendo game, obviously the day had to be saved and things would go back to normal, anyone expecting anything else are insane, the final shot with the floating baloons teared me up quite alot not gonna lie, I am a huge sucker for nice endings with charismatic music like that. I do wish they did something with olivias memory by the end though.

Overall, I give this game a very solid, highly recommended 9/10, the only real drawback of the game was it's overly simple regular battle system while it's snappy and quick, the fact that you only had two ways to beat enemies made it too simple and not as interesting as it could be, it needed more. but thankfully, the game did not overdo it or overstay its welcome and this was more than balanced by the abundance of very clever boss and mid-boss fights.

The pink ribbon was the lowest point of the game.

the MUSIC is loving incredible, whoever made the music for this game had the time of his life and half the fun and experience of this game is the music alone, utterly loving fantastic music. It doesnt stop getting more awesome until the very end.

Boss fights was great, Graphics were incredible, Characters were fun and funny, overall, I walked into this game with low expectations considering my love of the TTYD and wanting a disney-pixar style fun and emotional story and experience, I wanted to laugh, be enchanted, and cry manly tears, and I was completely and utterly satistfied, I got that and more. I recommend paper mario very much, and enjoyed my time thoroughly with it and will fondly remember the characters in it. I'm happy I bought it and experienced it.

9/10!

I guess that makes sense, I didn’t know anything about the previous partners so i wasnt aware of this pattern. I agree that they should’ve given Olivia a little bit of a better final note. But as someone coming into this fresh, I think it was appropriate, Olivia sacrifices herself to undo her brothers spell, and sadly her brothers spell included herself. I think the final shot on the throne in the ending and Peach’s acknowledgement of her sacrifice was good, but I agree they should’ve given us just a little extra something.

Overall I leave this game with very positive feelings and I don’t mind at all this new direction they’re taking paper Mario in as long as they actually deepen the regular combat system next time, that’s the only real drag on this game. Everything else has been A+

Also, another poster said something earlier in this thread that makes the ending make more sense.

Olivia is a naive and child-like person, she doesnt think with her head but with her heart to do what's right, she made the wish the same way she made every other decision in her life, without thinking but with pure intentions.

Also, I just looked up the 100% ending, and it gave me EXACTLY the ending I was looking for, this game's story rules, thank goodness they tied that bow in the end. what a wonderful fairy tale, I teared up all over again :qq:
