Stone tools in survival crafting games always get to me. They're always made out of 'stone', just like any rock you see lying around that's all good.

There are only a few types of stone suitable for flaking, and back in their heyday they were valuable resources mined in open-pit mines and traded considerable distances. A given core could have a long life starting as an axehead and getting smaller and smaller every time its reflaked into a new blade until it ends up as a tiny blade for scraping hides.

Iron is actually closer, you can make bloomery iron using a surprisingly simple furnace made out of clay, leather and charcoal if you know how.

Now turning the iron bloom into a useful tool, that's going to take you a while.
