I also saw rumors that Tesla was working on basically extension cords for people with inconvenient charge port locations to be able to not take up two spots.

I haven’t seen anyone talking about it, but one of the most interesting Rivian features is that the optional rooftop tent they sell gets power and A/C from the car below. A feature which as far as I can tell no one else has. Granted, it’s a pretty niche use case, but it’s still really cool.

Is that one of those roof platform tents you see on the various overlanding rigs? I haven’t seen one on a rivian yet but I’m sure I will because those kind of things are super popular here for outdoorsy types. Usually on a Tacoma or 4Runner.

I wouldn't put it down to anything more conspiratorial than just scrotes being scrotes. If you put a completely unattended fuel pump in the back corner of the same parking lot, how long you figure that would last before it gets hosed up?

I'm really hoping there is enough of a business case for the smaller vehicles. I feel like where we live I see lots of Bolts, Fits, and other small things (in addition to lots of crossovers, of course). They're all discontinued anyway in lieu of bigger vehicles. Last time I was at some auto show thing the rep suggested a Kia Niro instead of the Soul, and nope...doesn't fit the bill for me.

At the L2 chargers at work seen a few different vehicles and the F150 lightnings are by far the largest I’ve seen on there! Looks like the EV9 is about a foot shorter than a Tahoe: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/kia-ev9-2023-suv-vs-chevrolet-tahoe-2020-suv/ They’re definitely not small but for a 3 row suv they’re not huge. Similar in size to an R1S, but I have seen reviewers say the rivian loses some space in the upper passenger area because it tapers more. But it does have a wayyyy bigger frunk.

Leasing a 2024 Leaf SV Plus for $100/month ($2K down, 10K miles/year, 2 years) — is there any reason not to do this? I’d only use it around the city, only charge at home, and have an ICE car for longer trips and fun driving etc.

the only thing that gives me pause is the term you didn't list: the mileage overage. if you think you'll get anywhere near it, you should consider that too. but even if it's something insane like $1/mile that might still be worth it. there's also the insurance requirements; be sure to get a quote in case they're insane too like a $100 deductible on comp and collision or something

the maverick is still frankly too big to truly differentiate itself from midsize pickups. Like it looks small and tidy next to an F150 or bigger, but park it next to a sedan or small hatch and it still looks quite big by comparison. It’s still based on a similar platform to a Ford Escape and it’s sized like a large SUV with two rows of seats and a 5’ bed behind them. Unless you stick to the hybrid/FWD the value proposition in terms of size or fuel economy vs something like a Ranger or even one of the incoming Tacomas just isn’t there. The AWD models, especially the lifted one, you’re lucky if you pull MPG in the mid-to-high 20s. For sure there’s a benefit to building it off of a crossover platform instead of a “real” truck platform WRT the truck’s road manners, but otherwise it seems like putting any options at all on a Maverick is just an exercise in being upsold to a Ranger. You lose out on street performance, which might matter if you use the truck to commute, but the Ranger’s so much more capable as a truck for a comparatively negligible hit in fuel economy. I understand why Rivian didn’t debut an R2T, with how the R1T is kind of at the lower limit for comfortably sizing a “modern” “full-size” pickup truck and providing enough comfortable seating room in back, and an even more “midsize” truck would probably fit in more garages/etc but at the expense of dangerously diluting their production resources, but I do hope someday they show off something Subaru BRAT/Baja-sized. Make an R3T. Or an R4T that fits somewhere between the R3 and R2

The Maverick is like the perfect size for a homeowner who needs to haul trash and lumber and stuff occasionally, but still wants to get 30+ MPG on their commute into work, and it's easier to drive and a lot lower to the ground than the current crop of "1/4 tons". I really wish they'd made a ranger lightning instead of an F-150 lightning. It would play to the dimensions' strengths much better. People don't try to tow 10k lbs behind a Ranger/Tacoma.

There's nothing about the maverick that you couldn't do with a Bronco Sport. "Truck" usability requires fitting a plywood sheet flat between the wheel wells, to me (and many others). If you routinely transfer things that are tall, an open bed has serious advantages. The stuff I take whenever I go camping fits easily into a short-bed pickup, but wouldn't fit into a van or SUV at all.
