It's a darn good record

Also, I was listening to "Automation" the other day and realized that the opening to it is remarkably similar to Dirty Three "Indian Love Song". I mean I've encountered parallel riff development or familiar melodies before but this is really similar:

https://youtu.be/WX2ak8avLfM

https://youtu.be/FMLQfJHJomE (around 2 minutes in mostly)

Like even the percussion is similar, so weird

I'm waiting for the news that they burn out so hard they end up committed. No surprise and much sadness, but also what a Gizzard way to finish the band honestly.

Most of these dates are from their pre-COVID stops that had to be rescheduled. Still, 3-hour marathon sets sound amazing.

They also did quietly release their nineteenth album a few days ago after a 3-hour marathon show in Melbourne. Available on vinyl and apparently may not get a digital release in any form. Two 15-minute tracks that dig deeper into mostly-instrumental trance-y synth weirdness and which a lot of fans probably aren't really going to like, they were originally created for the US marathon shows that were going to happen in spring 2020 but are still perpetually delayed.

Timeland is great, and hearing Ambrose rapping on Smoke and Mirrors alone is worth the 15 minutes investment. It's definitely more on the chill side, but it's nice for work time IMO. Definitely not a traditional record, though.

I'm (probably) going to this show (traveling for it) and still bummed that 4/20 Gizz Show was ripped away from me, but I can't wait for the tour. I've got Red Rocks tickets I've been hanging onto since 2019, too.

Same day as the single release, they dropped a live version of Magenta Mountain from the Timeland fest show that was recorded Chunky Shrapnel-style with PHC Films, worth a watch & listen, especially because it has a really good outro guitar solo bit that I wish would've been on the studio version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Gm2TudHe0s

Usually when reviewers call a song "Beastie Boys inspired" they have no idea what they're talking about, but in this case it tracks. Very appropriate for the 30th anniversary of Check Your Head, too.

Truly surprised that both the hip-hop tracks on this are actually pretty good. The Garden Goblin is another early standout, but man it’s just wild how many different sounds they manage to pull off on one record without feeling too whiplash-y.

For whatever reason it sure seems the The Funeral’s outro is meant to go straight in to Timeland.

The hip-hop tracks are.. alright, imo. I hope they don't keep doing it, personally. Everything else is 69/10 King Giz quality.

This album is insane. I think the White Album comparison is very apt, and personally wouldn't mind if the metal tracks were excluded (though I love the last minute of Gaia and the Perihelion callback in Predator X).

They’ve been playing Dripping Tap super regularly. Before the record dropped they were also doing at least one or two of Magenta Mountain, Blame it on the Weather, Garden Goblin, Gaia, and did Preadator X for the first time at the last show before the album.

Now that it’s out I wouldn’t be surprised if they mix in some of the others too, though I’d bet Grim Reaper and Sadie Sorceress end up sitting with Intrasport in the ‘we’ll play it one day’ pile.

https://youtu.be/CKtamju-bdo

Somebody mixed in a full Preadator X->Perihelion transition that would be fun to see done live. It’s set up really nicely for it.

Automata 10 Pack
Jun 21, 2007

Ten games published by Automata, on one cassette
After listening to it a bunch I think I'm going to put Omnium Gatherum as my fifth favorite Gizz Album. Which wouldn't be saying much if it were any other Band but this is 5th place out of 20 albums, lol.

A ton of the songs are good, but also I really do enjoy the production of the album. It's so nice and hazy and lofi-y. It's like a combination of their old psyche-rock sound aesthetic but with their more improved modern songwriting. And I think they did a great job taking all the different styles and making them fit into a whole. Sure, there's a metal track next to a jazz track, but it works in the same way Beck would do it.

If there's anything holding this album back, it's that does sorta drag on and peters out at the end. Even though I disagree with the idea that the later songs are weak (Predator X, Red Smoke, and Candles are all really good songs by themselves), I do feel pretty done with the album by the time it reaches that point. And it sorta just... yeah. peters out. Three chill songs that lull you into disengagement after listening to an album for 70 minutes and the final track feels very unfinished. It's like they also got tired of the album as well and ducked out.

also i don't like the persistent song, it's v.annoying

Gumboot Soup and the latest album, Omnium Gatherium are great as post-introduction listens because there's such a wide range of styles. You can easily get pointed to an album (or Gizz adjacent band like Pipe-Eye) from a single song.
