Booo this take https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2022/08/ebike-electric-bikes-climate-change-exercise/671305/ quote:Bikes have always worn many helmets: cycling as exercise, cycling as leisure, cycling as sport, cycling as transit. These roles often conflict with one another. The commuter sneers at the spinner, who pedals pointlessly to nowhere. The leisure-rider spurs the Lycra-racer, who endangers pedestrians and inspires drivers to hate cyclists. E-bikes continue, and worsen, that disorder by jumbling up aspects of bicycles and motorcycles. Strapping a motor to a bike turns out to alter more than just speed and exertion. It produces a chameleon that takes on, under various conditions, both the best and worst features of a variety of transportation technologies. The result is less an evolution of a two-wheeled machine than a pastiche of the many things such a device represents. It’s a monster made from bicycles and motorbikes. Booooooo!

This weekend I'm going to check out a used first-gen FLX Babymaker (cringe) pro for $500: https://flx.bike/products/babymaker-standard-and-pro-eu Anything caveats I should be aware of? Never owned an e-bike, but commute on a gravel bike on a route with some hills.

quote:Not much to go wrong with these bikes quote:Pretty sure that bike was not just panned but dangerously assembled The duality of bikes $400 with less than 100 miles on it. So far so good. Now to find a replacement for that taint-numbing saddle.

I used a version of this chain lock that you wear around your waist for years while I was a daily bike commuter in an urban area. It resisted several attempts to cut through it. After I moved to a new apartment building, someone did finally break through. I managed to steal my bike back though (long story). https://www.rei.com/product/846520/hiplok-lite-chain-lock
