apple does not and will never play by the rules they impose on others. they don't see this as being unfair. core to apple's ideology is that their own programmers are simply better and more trustworthy than the great unwashed masses of users and developers

I don’t disagree with either claim. Apple has been getting better and better at making appliances, but it is difficult at best to reconcile that skill set and worldview with making general purpose computers

to be on topic I think this is the same attitude that has led Microsoft engineers to conclude they must assert control over your computer and tell you when to restart for updates rather than inform you and then empower you to make good decisions about your computer. whether or not that’s wrong I don’t know but it is in line with an understanding of the personal computer as an appliance managed remotely by people that are better than you

but you can't assign more than an 18 hour block of active times, which is stupid and ridiculous because it never takes 6 fuckin hours to apply an update!

i want the computer to be ready for use at 8am, but i don't want it to wake up to do updates at 2am because everyone's sleep is hosed and usually that's when i am finally able to drift off and even the blue light under the door is enough to gently caress it up. why can't i just say to do it between 4am and 8am. gently caress

note that you double down on calling the user an idiot instead of asking if we can do better than an appliance the user purchased to watch movies and share cat pictures requiring monthly service interruptions, without which we can expect a cybernetic pandemic that could swiftly result in crippling attacks on power grids and other essential systems

again: we spent decades taking away the capabilities of computers and sold people dedicated appliances for pornography and cat pics, but did such a shoddy job of building them that they now present a tangible risk to millions of human lives

all we can think to do about this is to malign our customers as wretched fools, unworthy of our genius, and build ever more elaborate mechanisms to infantilize them and brutalize them into assuming the responsibility for our laziness and greed
