I'm curious, are any of those worth anything? First editions and such? Is there any specific reason to keep them in plastic?

Mostly looks like mass market paperbacks to me.

And even with collectible books worth thousands of dollars I haven't seen people bag them like this. It's generally considered to be a bad idea due to potentially trapping moisture and most plastic isn't what you'd call "archival quality."

Maybe he's a smoker or has cats pissing all over everything and doesn't want the smell to get into the books.
