Mostly looks like mass market paperbacks to me.

And even with collectible books worth thousands of dollars I haven't seen people bag them like this. It's generally considered to be a bad idea due to potentially trapping moisture and most plastic isn't what you'd call "archival quality."

Maybe he's a smoker or has cats pissing all over everything and doesn't want the smell to get into the books.
