I think they put the bones together wrong on that one lol

based on that drawing I imagine Toby has a metabolism of a rock. because with a mouth that small compared to that body mass, otherwise he'd have to be eating like a wood chipper if he was an active feller, wouldn't he?

Unlike most fossils, there's not a lot of room for error in this one, there's a mostly-articulated specimen. I guess it's neck could have been even shorter.

Synapsids were pre-mammals weren’t they? More related to mammals than the dinos that mostly replaced them

the head and neck arrangement reminds me of some of those giant tortoises

just the size of the head compared to the body and legs, and how there's that big area under the neck
but the Cotylorhynchus has an even shorter neck and also no shell obviously

Mammals are the only surviving subgroup of synapsids, yes, but there were plenty of other lineages of synapsid that completely died out. Sadly none of the ones featured in this thread are thought to be our direct descendants. They only live on in our hearts.

That low-rent dino who can't even make up his mind whether to be a land animal or a water animal only got to exist at all because dimetrodon was already extinct millions of years by then. Peak performance had already happened.

He's not even the best dino ankylosaurus or the best water-based hunter (sharks were there before, during, and after).

What do you think about Liaoningosaurus, the possibly semi-aquatic, fish-eating ankylosaur?

All ankys are cool and if they wanna take a refreshing dip to eat some dumb fish that's cool too.
But let's be clear that this thread is about dimetrodons, kings of the synapsids, who walked waddled the earth an aeon before the first dino ever hatched.

There are an assload of different Dimetrodons. That's not even all of them. There are currently 13 recognized species.

Some of them are eating each other. That's not very nice.
