Okay. Maybe a stupid question, but I only ask because I've seen it before: Is your tube or the tire holding the air in?

The tire holds the tube in, which holds the air in.

I wax my chain in a double boiler like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAyjdmbm0CY
But I make my own wax like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHr9znwpwmQ
If you are lazy, you can just buy something like https://moltenspeedwax.com/collections/molten-speed-wax and put it in a pot inside a pan of boiling water for a couple minutes.

I like waxing my chain cuz it has lower friction and is cleaner(I.E. my bike doesn't get poo poo dirty): https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/latest-news/is-a-waxed-chain-worth-it-321497

OzCycle is an idiot and uses roughly 10x too much PTFE. You can actually just use straight food grade paraffin and the performance will be within <1W of wax with any amount of lubricious micronized solids.

That sounds better, but I already have 3lbs of wax. I also have the molton wax, but I don't like that it has Molybdenum disulfide, which leaves black crap around.
I really like the double boiler technique, I think the crock pot thing takes up too much room and requires a separate crock pot just for your chain. This just requires me to have a old pot that fits in a pan.

Dealing with the links when waxing your chain all the time kinda sucks, so I bought the tool. It was cheap AF. https://www.ebay.com/itm/174361410218
A tool isn't needed, you can do the bulldog clip trick or use a brake cable, but those didn't work well for me.

Kapton/polyimide is way thinner and has a bit too much elongation IMO. The green powder coat masking tape is about perfect and it has a fairly headache free silicone based adhesive. Also known as 3M 8992, but the generic stuff is just as good for rim taping purposes.

My friend recommended strapping tape cuz it is cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Film-Strapping-Tape-8896/dp/B00C0Z1Z5C. What do y'all think? Should I just spend the extra money and get the powdercoat tape?

There is probably a more economical way to buy the good stuff than the 5 roll listing linked earlier (some of those rolls I believe being narrower than you would ever use to tape a rim).

Like this listing is the same price as your strapping tape and includes a
single 1" wide roll: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GUFMBVY

I think that's the correct width? If not, the same company probably sells individual rolls of other widths.

Perfect, thanks!

Question I don't know if I asked before but would save me a lot of time this weekend... What does everyone use to get rust off of chrome rims? I need to restore a pair this weekend and get new tires/tubes in there, currently been using 0000 steel wool but it's sooooo loving tedious and my arthritis ridden hands hate it

Are you using WD-40 with the steel wool? That makes it a lot easier and more effective.

My gardener has been on foot (and bus) since his bike fell apart.

Ended up buying him Shimano V-Brakes. I had no issue installing the front brake. Unfortunately, I don't think that the rear brake I purchased is compatible with his frame.

The...screw sockets (for lack of a better term) are on the under side of the seat stays:

Found a comparable photo online:

What kind of rear brake should I be looking for?

Alternatively, if I do a Google image search for "1990 Schwinn Impact MOS" most of the photos show a braking system on the top of the seat stay:

Was really hoping to get it back to him this weekend. :unsmith:

It's a Shimano U brake: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/canti-u.html Well that picture lists Suntour, but same idea.

Would this brake+lever bundle work?

Considering I already installed a V-brake in the front with a new lever, how bad of an idea would it be have a U-brake in the rear; a V-brake in the front (and thus, two different levers)?

It won't look as nice(to have mismatching levers), but it will work fine. I haven't dealt with U-brakes in like 20 years, but my understanding is that the BMX ones will work: https://www.mtbr.com/threads/late-80s-u-brake-on-chainstay-rockhoopper-trek-8500-can-i-bmx-u-brake.915905/

I'm wanting to upgrade my bike to use intergrated bars like Bontrager Aeolus, are they all $600? I already have the fork and headset for them, and I'm hoping to find something nice in the $200-$400 range. Or am I just old and that is the price for carbon bars these days? I looked at some older intergrated bars, but I'd prefer ones that route my brake hose to the headset.

Nah go ahead and use cheap carbon on the part where if it breaks you die, I'm sure all the most reputable companies want to cut costs there specifically.

Yeah I definitely wanna avoid ebay China carbon. But I'm not sure why the trek is almost twice the price of the Ritchey intergrated bars? I guess what I'm asking for is the ritchey bars with a channel like the trek ones or even internally routed like the Deda alanera but not for dentists.

To be clear, are you looking for a "barstem" or just a combination of bars and stem that will let you route the hoses full internal?

A "barstem" that let's me run the hoses internally to my internal routing headset.

When I saw him bolt up the eeBrakes, I thought, dawg, just buy a frame. But obviously this was a challenge to himself kind of project.

I assume those bars are modified from some actual Ritcheys, and were inspired by the Surly Corner Bar. But maybe he's always had some fitment need to run mtb levers.

The breathtaking optimism of using epoxy to span this tubing gap:

They are not Ritchey, tons of knockoffs love the WCS logo.

Doing the slow cooker wax on a new chain. Do I have to do the MSW mineral oil/alcohol process on the new chain to get the grease off, or will dawn in an ultrasonic be sufficient?

I use simple green in an ultrasonic cleaner, which seems to be enough(the wax stuck to the chain).

For non-new chains:
I've heard of some people putting their chain in a ziploc bag with simple green in it, and water in the cleaner, so you don't end up with a bunch of dirt and grease in your cleaner. I have not tried it.
I personally shake my chain in a bottle with simple green to get most of the old wax/dirt off before cleaning it.

Wait, are people complaining that their chains rusted and broke after leaving them in a water based cleaner for two weeks?

I'm suggesting you shake your chain and simple green for a minute or so in a plastic container, and than ultrasonic clean for like 30 minutes(degas first if you want).
