Third time is a charm right?
Anybody have opinions on a 21 Scott genius 960? I'm looking at picking up a bike to give me something else to do besides hiking, dirt bikes, and skiing. I've been looking at used bikes under $2k. Kona process 134/153 also seems to be common in this range. I've seen some older Santa Cruz Bronson's but they're often from 2015-17.

I grew up riding BMX, raced in my teens and rode skatepark/dirt jumps into my 20s. I transitioned to road cycling and racing for a few years but it wasn't my passion and I lost interest after we moved to Seattle. I had an orbea hard tail for a while but didn't have friends who rode so I sold it. I had ridden it a few times but hated any downhill stuff on it and wanted a dual suspension so I sold it. I also ride dirt bikes and figured this would be a great way to spend more time on two wheels.

I'm 38 and not looking to get crazy or kill myself riding anymore. Some jumps are fun but cruising flowy trails is a blast. My brother in law took me riding a few years ago when I visited in park City and had a great time on a borrowed carbon bmc dual suspension.

Some people clearly didn't spend enough time as kids building sketchy jumps and seeing how many trash cans they can clear.

As someone who rode flats in BMX/Park and clipless on road, I think I could go either way but I like flats for the ability to bail easily on anything I might be getting air.

I was in the same boat a few years ago. Herniated my L4-5 and L5-S1. Major sciatica down my right leg. I had injured it several times over the years thanks to hockey and snowboarding, BMX crashes probably didn't help either. But there were 3 main incidents over the last 7 years that were excruciating but slowly recovered. First one was bad but I got recovered after a few weeks. Second one was mild but left me with long lasting mild sciatica. I saw a physical therapist for a while but didn't get much improvement. The third one was really bad and forced me to seek further care.

After the last one, I didn't really recover. It was the most pain I've ever felt in my life and I couldn't walk for about a week. I couldn't sleep, couldn't sit up. Every position was painful. I went to the doc and got pain meds, nerve blockers etc, muscle relaxers until I clicked see a specialist and get an MRI. It was not fun. I went to a few spine and injury specialists, a new physical therapist, got an injection. The injection did nothing for me. My new PT worked magic with noticeable improvement in a few sessions. After a month I could only barely walk down the block. I couldn't stand longer than 10-15 minutes. I was in PT for a few months. After I was done I felt normal for the first time in years. I felt better than I did even before I hurt it the last time. BUT I feel like my injury was right there waiting to happen again. All my doctors pushed me away from surgery. My brother in law just had it and got no relief after 5 months of recovery. It seems like such a gamble.

I pretty much stopped playing hockey, switched from snowboarding to skiing and I'm selective about my risk because a fall will likely result in back surgery.

Watch your backs. Back injuries suck. Also find a good physical therapist. Mine was magical and I will follow her anywhere.

I found out today that I need surgery for my herniated disc, but I haven't ridden in 4 months so anything that actually helps me get some relief for this pinched nerve would be awesome :smith:

Oof best of luck with your surgery. I'm trying to avoid it as much as possible but I hope it brings you relief.

I had two physical therapists and my first did nothing to improve my condition after 6 weeks. My second worked magic in the first three weeks and continued for another 9. From not being able to stand or walk more than a few minutes to feeling better than I have in years without surgery, I made sure to keep her info for later.

My success came from doing lots of stretches targeting my groin, hip flexors, and hamstrings. The small strengthening exercises targeted my glutes and back muscles. It was strange because the exercises seemed so minor but they paid off quickly.

Use your suspension to your advantage. Push down and time the rebound to pull back as it comes back up. Eventually you'll do it enough that you don't think about the timing.

Trying to always get your front wheel up with a pedal stroke isn't always possible.

Is there any real advantage of a 2" hitch over a 1-1/4"? The larger size seems to be 2x the price but I doubt it offers any advantage for hauling bikes around.

If all you're ever doing is hauling bicycles 1-1/4 should be fine. The only noticeable difference is torsion. If you get a few mountain bikes on a rack, it might twist and bounce more on the smaller hitch than on the larger. On either hitch you get, buy an inexpensive hitch tightener to keep things from bouncing around, especially on rough roads.

If you have a small car or small SUV, I would say just do a 1 1/4. If you have a decent sized SUV, I would personally go with the larger, especially if you might ever tow anything. I use a hitch rack for my dirt bike as well and it needs 2".

I always used knock around for cheap sunglasses. They're great, can get lots of customization including polarization, tints etc and usually top out around $40. Coupon codes are a plenty and they often throw in an extra free pair.
