loving contractors. I finally scheduled someone for Monday to look at my furnace issue that the inspection uncovered 3 weeks ago. I had someone lined up, who has ghosted me, and a request to a second contractor who ignored me.

Now I'm waiting on a foundation issue, I got a contractor who fully committed to helping me out and has blown off every appointment we made so far. He told me to call him this morning and now is not answering his god drat phone.

Also it's a stupid issue, there's a post supporting an I-beam in the center of the house, the inspector said it's slightly crooked. You can't even tell when looking at it.

I can’t stand trying to get contractors in to do any work because of this. They know they can just ghost people and pick the jobs they want to do because there is so much demand. I have a guy I use cash under the table for simple stuff but anything more complicated where I need to have licenses and insurance is just a nightmare.

Yep I don't know how these guys aren't rolling in it, I have people ask me every day who they can call for a plumbing or electrical issue and the answer in this town is: if you aren't building a new house from scratch or a new apartment building well good luck

Speaking of contractors, the sinks in our washrooms are the type that you push down on the basin plug to engage it, and then you push again to release. No handle or external mechanism at all.

So, if one is stick down, how are you supposed to get it back up? I've tried whapping it, hoping it would jar it, and no beuno.

I am able to spin it so I know it's unthreaded, but I can't remove it/bring it up. It's not magnetic enough for a rare earth to pull it out.

Ideas?

I don't know much about the peninsula, but it is impossible to get contractors to show up for anything in Seattle unless you you are doing a new build or a major renovation. We are currently building a dadu in our back yard, and I was originally going to GC the project but couldn't get people to even respond to me to get a quote from different subs. The couple that did respond straight up told me they would only consider the job if they ran the whole project, and even then it was a 6+ month wait to even start talking about the project. Luckily we found a GC through word of mouth who was willing to take on the project in a reasonable timeframe.

So yea, if you want to do that sort of work and are already moving out here, I would get on it asap.

LOL no, I am trying to avoid taking apart the pipe (I think it's glued) but if it's just a fitting I might try and do that. I suspect it'll come up easily if I can get it from the back side.

Once I do, I need to take a look at the drat thing and do something so it doesn't happen again!

Try being a contractor. Unless your production manager is organized and great at communicating, it's a poo poo show. People will ask me questions about even basic things on a job and I have no answers unless I'm working on exactly what they're asking about, I have to tell them to call our production manager

I don't know about Key, but Kitsap's a lot slower than Seattle, a lot of contractors live out here, and will snap up jobs so they don't have to take the ferry.

E: that's not to say there's not plenty of work, Kitsap's booming, and not showing any signs of slowing down.

Probably full of hair/gunk in the mechanism.

I agree I'd try something with a suction cup of suitable size to grab onto it so you can add more upward impetus while trying to cycle it, but if the sink is dry, you could use a hot glue stick instead.

Try looking at drains on plumbing supply places or amazon and you might be able to figure out what you have. The product photos or instructions might show how it all goes together which will help you figure out how to take it apart. Also look for a replacement stoppers so you can both figure out how it comes apart and so you can replace it. If it's like my bathtub stopper it might be spinning forever because the bit that's spinning is an adjuster and not directly connected to the bit that's threaded into the drain. I had to break so that I could grab the remains hard enough with channel locks to bind up the adjuster and spin the thing out.

Spent a few thousand $ worth of parts for new car at Automotive Superstore in Sydney two weeks ago and haven't heard a peep since. Tried many times to get in touch over the phone, their FB chat, and email support and not a single update to my order.

Yesterday I said gently caress it and called a neighbouring business and he told me they get more than one call a week to see if they are open. Straight up said "They don't give a gently caress and don't respond to anyone, I'd advise you chargeback your order and contact ACCC plus leave a bad review online". Judging from the support numbers on their Zendesk - theres over 2 thousand support requests in 5 days between my 'hey mates can I get a tracking number' and my follow up support 'where's my order'

My bank are being really helpful, but looks like I've gotta wait for the claim to finalize and then I can buy my parts elsewhere. If I go ahead a buy parts before the refund processes theres a real chance the shop disputes the reversal and I end up getting my parts from them too doubling up everything. Lucky these aren't critical to the operation of the car and more fun upgrades.

I gather from complaints online that there are a few UK businesses doing this too. I really don't understand it!

I can happily accept that due to corona things might be slower and they might be having working practice/staffing issues but there is no excuse for not handling it better. Just put a popup on your website saying 'orders may be delayed, and we are only shipping once per week' or similar and get all your admin staff to work remotely and deal with queries and support requests.

On the other hand I have seen a number of the smaller indie specialists that I use post on facebook over the past 4 or 5 months saying "wow, you lot are busy on your project's - I've had to get extra staff in to deal with and pack all your orders! I've got loads of stock in so keep them coming!". Look for suppliers like this and give them your money!

It's really loving bizarre, the business is open and operating at full capacity according to the neighbouring company who initially took messages to be nice and walk over but now had a gut full of the poo poo.

In my industry I have 40-50 orders of parts flying or floating from all over the world. Each order has maybe 100 parts each. I KNOW where they all are, and if a customer calls or emails me, I respond within my self imposed goal of 1 business day with SOMETHING. For example I've been actively on the phone to TNT for an ETA and while talking to them, signed for a few pallets without taking notice which exact order - whelp was part of the order I was on the phone about 'Humphreys, you literally JUST signed for it 5 seconds ago while on hold"

These pricks are from what I can tell ignoring or deleting everything and playing the childhood game of "I can't see you, you can't see me"

The stoppers in our bathtubs are like that. If you can grab the shaft under the stopper, you might be able to unthread the cap and find the screw to release the rest of the guts from whatever they mount to. Probably doesn't help much if it's stuck down, unfortunately.

Yeah, I know/knew how they operate. It's just a stud that the stud for the stopper mechanism sits on that either stays down or pops up, really nothing fancy and really nothing external to it at all.

But, I was able to get it up. The P-trap was indeed just threaded so able to take it off and just poke it up with a coat hanger. I'm going to have to grab the threads with some pliers and try to spray some lube around the stud/whatever mechanism to try to flush out and crud/lubricate it. Most of the sinks in this house are starting to get a little sticky, so I think I'll do it on all of them.
