The Oxford vaccine isn’t American

The Moderna vaccine seems like the riskiest one but those two are both in Phase 3 trials. My own local hospital recruited 1,000 patients for one a couple months ago.

Like I understand the concerns but I also think no vaccine in history has had the benefit of 80 years of testing and these Western candidates aren’t skipping any milestones. The biggest risk is probably with the manufacturing.

i'm 90% certain that when the first vaccine comes out, healthcare workers are going to be mandated to take it,

Yeah I also think I have a different perspective on it since I don't get to sit at home anymore to ride this out. If the vaccine is only 20% effective then that's 20% better for me.

I went in for my experimental AIDS vaccine last week but so far nothing for COVID-19. China definitely gave their soldiers something, though.

Everyone does "trunk or treat" in their church or school parking lot these days anyways where parents just line up all of their cars and kids go up to each.

My neighborhood gets shitloads of trick or treaters and all my neighbors for miles go nuts decorating. It owns. That trunk-or-treat stuff is lame.

Guess we won't be doing it this year but whatever.

We got a derecho in Colorado a few weeks ago and it was nuts. Just a line of wind moving across half the state, moving on as quickly as it showed up. I went out with my neighbors to chop up a 15-foot tree limb that dropped across the street.

An election is not an unknowable random event, it's deterministic, and unpredictable only due to limited information and time. The percentage numbers indicate the model's confidence in the outcome, based on measurements of things which in reality fully determine the result, and based on theories of how and to what degrees they determine it, making a tractable guess of what will happen possible.

538's theories were wrong and have not changed.

I think it's Trump's election to lose, but that he still might. If anyone could avoid doing the many things that could easily clinch his victory, it'd be him.

e: Biden's campaign continues to be elder abuse.

It is really funny to encounter the people who think that the 538 model implies that if elections were run over and over again the other candidate would win X% of the time. What do they think is happening to voters in that kind of world? Spontaneous neuron rewrites from the flap of a butterfly wing?

William Gibson the SF author has an argument that the apocalypse isn't going to be one thing, it's going to be a "jackpot" of a thousand disasters all hitting at more or less the same time, and I gotta say that's looking pretty plausible right now.

Richard Paul Russo portrays it as kind of a frog boiling thing where things just steadily but slowly get worse and worse until we find ourselves living with a terminally diseased society, devastated coastlines and poison rain without remembering how we got there. I think that one’s my pet favorite.

That's actually not true. There was a big scientific paper a couple of weeks ago that much of the press misquoted. I think I covered it already itt and definitely in discord.

Basically the paper showed that we are certain you have immunity up to 3 months and beyond that it's not statistically certain (yet). This doesn't mean that immunity falls off it just means that the data isn't conclusive either way.

They also found one guy who got reinfected after 5 months and people are interpreting that to mean everyone will get reinfected after 5 months. The paper’s authors are busy trying to clarify that they think it’s an extremely rare phenomenon at this point.
