How great would it be if George Soros just tweeted “go time.” or something like that?

Ammonium nitrate is no loving joke, and it has to be stored properly or it will go up. There’s a reason most ports won’t touch the stuff.

2,700 ton is enough to keep a medium sized hard rock mine stocked in ANFO explosives for about a year.

Or, you know, fertilizers.

De-lurking briefly to cross-post a news article about the investigation as to the explosion in Beirut.

Salient points:

It's looking like this was a ship of dubious quality mining explosives bound from Georgia to Africa, impounded by Lebanese authorities because it was hilariously unsafe, ship owners (a shady Russian company) claimed to be bankrupt and then vanished, ship's crew was eventually released but the cargo remained in a legal grey area and was never touched because of all the work and potential cost involved in confiscating or disposing of the shipload of unknown quality mining explosives, and everyone aware of the danger was filed away and ignored.

It’s not an explosive until you add diesel, and it’s not a mining explosive until you add boosters and detonators.

Ammonium nitrate is fertilizer with explosive potential until you add the diesel. This makes some people dismiss it as being just fertilizers, and this makes some people freak out as soon as it’s mentioned.

See: the time we rolled a truckload of 5.1 into a ditch and someone reported it to the cops as a truckload of explosives

The best prediction model of 2016 (it was!) is back:

To save you reading, if there was a "now-cast" model, it would spit out a 93% Biden win because his polls are so high right now. It's still early in electoral terms, so based on past history, there's still a lot that could happen and that's the primary reason for the 71% chance.

Personally, I think the election has been set in stone for a long, long time. There's never been another president on TV ALL THE loving TIME, so past history can be chucked aside. I lean closer to the now-cast because everyone's minds were made up long ago, even pre-coronavirus.

Hey the last time the model gave this result, X happened.

Thankfully the model’s result make it clear that X cannot happen.

Percentage of test conducted showing up positive; they’re testing the entire student bodies and the tests have a pretty high false negative rate in asymptomatic patients.
