SHINee's back

hi hello I am placeholding this OP I guess with my post from the pop thread, since it's a quick n dirty summary already:

esperterra posted:

The quickest primer on kpop history is that popular Korean music was mostly trot and ballads until artists like Seo Taiji and the Boys and JYP showed up in the 90s with sounds inspired by American hip hop and pop music. From there you see the first generation of kpop as we know it today starting and really blowing up with the formations of SM Ent, JYP Ent and YG Ent. Lee Soo Man of SM in particular was the one who took a lesson from Motown and implemented the idol trainee system that basically every company uses to this day for its groups and soloists; as well as a rise in bringing over Western songwriters and producers to work on tracks. Then you get artists like BoA expanding Korean pop music into Japan and the rest of Asia (and even a brief stint in the US for BoA, though actively promoting her in three different countries at once was a bit much and they backed off on it pretty quickly to focus on Korea and Japan when she didn't blow up immediately) for the first time and opening up doors for everyone who followed her.

SM in general has kind of always been at the forefront of everything, though the Big Three (SM, JYP, YG) are all super influential. Both boy groups and girl groups as we know them today probably wouldn't exist if not for groups like Super Junior and Girls' Generation more or less setting and perfecting the mold for what to expect, though they weren't the first popular boy or girl groups in the industry.

Influential groups and soloists:

not rly idols:
Seo Taiji & the Boys
JYP

some big 1st gen names who inspired 2nd gen:
g.o.d.
H.O.T.
Fin.K.L
Rain
BoA (a queen who transcends generations and is still going 20 years strong)
Lee Hyori
Park Ji Yoon
Sechs Kies
Shinhwa
Chakra

some bigass 2nd gen names who inspired the 3rd gen:
Brown Eyed Girls (very unique for its time and still to this day. the group isn't really a product of a company in the way most idols are, they were brought together by the leader JeA herself and were all grown rear end women when they debuted other than Gain, who at 19 was still on the older side for typical debut in a group. BEG have also been heavily involved in their own songwriting and production from the beginning. BEG owns. They are also still kicking today and return for comebacks whenever they have the inspiration and time)
Super Junior
Girls' Generation
Shinee
TVXQ
f(x)
Wonder Girls
Big Bang
2NE1
4minute
KARA
Sistar
AOA
Lee Hi

Most of those groups have members who have had or still have very successful solo careers as well, either during their groups' heydey or after. Your Taeyeons and Taemins and Sunmis and HyunAs and GDragons and Park Boms and so on.

Then 3rd gen is your BTSes, your Twices, your Blackpinks. 1st and 2nd gen are really the ones you want to focus on if you're curious about the history of kpop itself and who laid the groundwork for what makes a kpop group today. Or even for who really kicked off expansion into the US. If it weren't for people like BoA, Rain, Wonder Girls, 2NE1, Psy/etc you wouldn't see groups like BTS or Blackpink having quite the success they do now in America. Though Blackpink is such a bizarre phenomenon for a group that in their four years have mostly focused on modeling/CFs and only have like 14 songs to their name rn and prob woulda found a way to blow up anyway.

There's a lot of debate around whether or not the 4th gen has started yet, a lot of people would argue it has. But there isn't really a clear difference in sound or any real big shift in general, so people are always arguing about when it started if it has. I don't care enough to rly look into it b/c I'm an old who mostly listens to 1st and 2nd gen music and the stuff coming from the people who debuted back then and are still going today.

Worth noting that kpop as an industry isn't the same as American pop music w/r/t domestic reach. The idol side of popular Korean music (which most people use kpop to refer to) is pretty niche in the grand scheme of the Korean music industry overall, and had its most popular days with the general public during the rise and prime of the 2nd gen imo. Getting into what is and isn't different about just general pop music in Korea and idol pop music is a pain in the rear end but for example, IU wouldn't be considered an idol these days and is more just an incredibly well respected singer-songwriter (and a drat good actress these days, too). But she was definitely an idol at debut.

thx for coming to my ted talk

Yeah this is pure cheese but it's so good. I love how JYP can just roll with it and make a bit of a fool of himself. Song slaps and Sunmi is as great as ever

JYP never disappoints, especially when he leans into just embracing the fact that he's more or less a walking meme at this point. Sometimes I feel like modern kpop takes itself too seriously too often, then JYP has a comeback and all is well with the world.

I really love the emphasis on this being a duet and not a featuring, too.

Without thinking too hard about it, all of HA:TFELT's 1719 is a masterpiece. Yubin's ME TIME, Sunmi's Pporappippam, and heckin Stay Tonight goddamn Chungha served so hard on that-- Play is great too though not as. Oh, and DESSERT. We all deserve it. Though I prefer Hyoyeon's song TURL she did with Cheetah for Good Girl of the stuff she's released this year, if we're including songs that aren't official comebacks. And if I include Good Girl then I Am Lee Young Ji would be very close to the top of any list I'd attempt to rank.

I should look at an actual list of all of this year's comebacks and sort out what's what, but those would be at my top either way. Then probably Solar, Hwasa and I&S close behind. Taeyeon, too; Happy kinda slipped under the radar but is a very good song. Minzy finally had a comeback and it was amazing, though I wonder if people were expecting a harder hitting dance number from her than the chill rear end song we got. GWSN's Wonderboy, The Aerialist is a loving delight. Ryu Su Jeong had a solo debut and it slapped, Tiger Eyes has been in my playlist rotation since I first heard it on one of the music shows.

There's been a lot of great comebacks this year, especially for GGs and soloists. Like Taemin's single that just dropped is so loving good-- though I'm hoping the next pre release for the album is going to be another iconic hoe anthem. Nobody does it better than Taemin.

Man the past 2-3 months especially have been loving stacked tbh

I caught this on one of the music shows this week and it was pretty catchy. I also have no idea what Sukhumvit Swimming means. There was another boy group adjacent thing I really liked too but I can't remember the dude's name, I think it was his solo debut or a solo comeback but he's a member of some group I definitely do not know the name of. I'll go back and look at the schedule later mb to jog my memory.

While I'm at it, never heard of this group before but I really dug this BG jam from last month:

SM's promo shots for Red Velvet's cover of Milky Way for the BoA cover album they've been trickling out all month had the first pic of Wendy since her accident, and they've since confirmed that she has recovered enough to participate in promotions so long as it isn't too hard on her body. I don't expect any dancing from her any time soon, but eyyy she's back. Perfect timing too b/c I just spent the past week finally digging into their discography.

Also here are the covers they've done so far. Gallant's cover of Only One is something really loving special.

You might get your wish with this Selena Gomez collab, apparently it will be a 'more refreshing and lovable charm than their usual image', which at least has me curious. My main issue with BP is the lack of versatility, so if this leads into the album actually changing things up YG might get me to pay attention to them.

I haven't dug into their JP singles yet so can't speak on Cookie Jar, but out of their Korean singles atm my favourite is either Peek-a-Boo, Automatic, Russian Roulette or their cover of SES' Be Natural.

Also Zimzalabim owns and it is incredibly obvious the producers were inspired by I Got a Boy.

RBB is probably my least favourite main single from Red Velvet but even then I think it's pretty great. Butterflies off the same mini album could have been the lead single. It's just insane how consistent they are, their harmonies elevate them to the next level.

Yeah, RBB is with Psycho as one of my 'this song owns but is at the bottom of my list of Red Velvet singles'. Bad Boy however is up there with the four I mentioned earlier.

Their harmonies are so loving good, and are a blessing in an era where I feel like GGs don't harmonize as often as they used to. You can always rely on SM for top tier vocals and exquisite harmonization.

I need to finish digging through their b-sides before I form any real opinions on them, but so far everything I've listened to is loving QUALITY.

I'm only going to recommend two b/c otherwise I will go on about second gen girl groups for far too long than I have time to atm. I think tonight I might start populating that placeholder post on the first page with the debuts/important singles etc of older groups, and I'll probably start with GGs.

Anyway, for Twice's contemporaries I cannot recommend Oh My Girl enough. They're one of the most exciting girl groups working rn imho and are all too talented for their own good. They're one of the strongest current groups vocally imho, up there with Mamamoo and RV, and YooA is one of the best dancers working rn too. Their main concept is typically a cuter one with a fairytale kind of spin, but they are super versatile especially once you dig into B-sides.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udGwca1HBM4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FY9VTlX-HI

The version of Twilight, my fave of their b-sides, they performed for Queendom last year is just too loving good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u8377YsRX4

Since you like When We Disco, you should dig into Wonder Girls imho. They're the first JYP girl group (Twice's company), and their concept is entirely retro with them playing around in a lot of different eras. Their lineup changed a few times but never to the group's detriment. Honestly their best album REBOOT (and one of the best pop albums period imho, kpop or otherwise) was when they were down to 4 members and came back as a band, with Sunmi having rejoined. Most of the members are songwriters and producers themselves, and early on were pretty involved with the production of their music, with REBOOT being almost entirely self composed! Fun fact: Sunmi's Siren was originally written for REBOOT, but was passed on for whatever reason.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZBn1e9pr2Q
The intro to this is super long b/c that's how JYP rolls, the song starts around 1:58 in lmao.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9QXQz6uE0M

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYGODWJgR-c

srsly tho all of REBOOT is loving amazing have some of the b-sides, then go listen to the whole thing if you dig it

Faded Love
GONE
One Black Night

They are legends and icons for a reason, up there with SNSD. All of their solo careers are loving amazing as well, Yubin especially-- though she unfortunately has far less material than Sunmi or Ye-eun's solo stuff. But it is all exceptional and it's always been a drat shame she never blew up like Sunmi or even Ye-eun's work as HA:TFELT. Yubin keeps the retro vibe the strongest of them all, from pure city pop bliss through to low fi hip hop heaven featuring legend Yoon Mi-rae.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MiQonPvlVM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiCDZYdPmys

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M-GNLCPf2I

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJD0arHF_5c

I'm always disappointed she gets so much less attention compared to Sunmi.

I know I said I was only gna recommend two but goddamnit more people need to realize how amazing Yubin is. The b-sides are also all loving quality. I really hope we get a full album out of her soon-- boss bitch been busy as she not only had a comeback this year, but also has followed in the steps of JYP himself and started her own entertainment agency.

Blackpink has released far less content than the typical idol group does and that does not only apply to their music, but the usual extra stuff companies throw out there to better endear fans to the idols. It's entirely possible a lot of this footage is stuff that was meant to use elsewhere. Plus pre-debut stuff is often filmed at every company even if it's never officially released to the public, just by virtue of needing to record a trainees progress so people not there during the evaluations and such can still see it/etc.

For all we know BP was originally supposed to have a reality show like 2NE1TV and it got scrapped, and footage could come from that. Or leftover content from the little bit of online show type stuff that Blackpink has done in their career. So who knows how much if any of this content was filmed just for the Netflix documentary, though I think there's been rumblings off a documentary for a while so mb the past year or so? they've been filming stuff specifically for it. I imagine a lot of the footage will be from YG themselves and then w/e the framing device/connective tissue for the docu may be to be from whoever is behind making it.
