Turns out ~three weeks ago was a really good time to give (G)I-DLE a second listen, have them totally click, and buy their entire discography to date. Now I get to experience a comeback hype train in realtime! :holy:

I'm really enjoying this new G Idle comeback. Good rear end song

The whole EP absolutely rips. Where Is Love is much more of an upbeat bop than I was expecting, with like, just a tinge of retro sensibility. I'm having a hard time identifying anything like a clear standout, so it's a really consistent level of quality from end to end.

Odd Eye fuckin' slaps, and I really hope that Road to Utopia is the culmination of Dreamcatcher finally getting some mainstream recognition. I know I'm one of those weird olds who still actually buys music rather than streams it, but it warmed my heart to pop into iTunes and glance at the "top albums" list on the main page and see this release at #2. Not on the K-pop list, on the all genres list. I don't care if it's only for a hot minute, that's a heck of an accomplishment.

Also it's so loving weird, but I only just finally came around on Dreamcatcher like two weeks ago, not even aware that they had a comeback coming up, and am now absolutely *addicted* to DC content. Fortunately for me, they really keep that tap on full. There's *so much* stuff out there, and it's all so good.

Now that I think about it, my whole K-pop journey has been really... weird. Like I was peripherally aware of the genre thanks to Psy and K/DA flirting with the mainstream, but never enough to pay it any mind. It's funny, but it was a Blackpink video showing up in my YT suggestions that actually got me going. Funny because I bought The Album and listened to it I think twice before shelving them for groups I enjoy much, much more. And the weird thing is, almost none of those groups have been instant hits for me. It took me a solid 3-4 critical listens of (G)I-dle songs before they really clicked for me. Same with Everglow and Dreamcatcher and Loona and Red Velvet and ATEEZ and Pentagon. About the only group I really, really like that just floored me from the absolute start has been Stray Kids, but my introduction to them was God's Menu, so that's at least understandable.

But yeah, I've found that in almost every case, repeated listens make me come around on groups I was lukewarm on for my initial impression. I'm currently trying to get into Mamamoo, mainly because I can immediately recognize their immense talent, but I haven't yet found the right songs to make them click (I've actually liked Hwasa's solo stuff more so far).

Not to be That Guy, because I realize it's incredibly unhelpful, but I'm pretty genre-agnostic. Seriously, if you go through my library, you'll find rock, pop, rap, metal, punk, r&b, j-pop, big band, country, classical, jazz, standards, industrial, latin, soundtracks, and on and on... and now k-pop.

I guess if there's any general preference, I like my music to have a little bit of an... edge? Or maybe some melodrama. I'm not much into ambient or drone, but it seems like that's not the sort of problem I'd run into exploring mainstream k-pop, so probably not useful info!

Dreamcatcher album sold more in the first day than the last albums first week. Debuted at #2 on Itunes worldwide and similar hype on twitter and youtube trending. So happy for them.

#1 worldwide
#2 on the US All Genre Albums Chart (the one you get on the main landing page in iTunes in the US) which is honestly even more impressive.

Also Twitter informs me that Odd Eye debuted at #1 on BUGS and #6 on Genie, which they've never had before, and RTU is #1 on both Gaon and Hanteo album sales. Looks like the traction is finally extending to their home country.

I've been keeping up on that wave of accusations as well, mainly because it seems my fandom is the kiss of death. (G)I-DLE? Check. Everglow? Check. Stray Kids? Check. Monsta X? Check. HyunA? Check. Loona? Check. All I need is for one of the Dreamcatcher girls and Chung Ha to get allegations thrown at them and that would cover my entire current K-pop library. :sadpeanut:

From what I can gather there's been a shitstorm of allegations against celebrities over the last few days due to the volleyball scandal last week-ish bringing school bullying back into the national spotlight, and Naver being about to drop their "most searched" tab which a lot of people fear will make it much easier for this kind of thing to get swept under the rug. How this has largely surfaced wrt k-pop idols is as a lot of mostly anonymous unverified accusations, ranging from the already-publicly-withdrawn (Loona's Chuu) to highly credible (Soojin). Most of them fall somewhere in the middle, and we don't really have any idea how it's going to shake out at this point.

More details (summaries, linked k-media articles) are in the OP of the megathread I linked above.

So, uh... how 'bout that PIXY debut?

So, a little something that warms my cold black heart after a month of terrible drama in K-pop-land:

Perpetual nugu Brave Girls' 2017 criminally underappreciated bop Rollin' went viral as all hell in Korea over the last week, thanks to a great video edit of some of their performances for the Korean military. Viral to the point where the song has hit #1 on Genie and Bugs, and into the 24-hour top 10 on Melon. Viral to the point where they're going to do promotions for it again, 4 years after it released, and actually have a decent shot at a win. :allears:

The last comms from Cube was a lengthy and detailed doc from Soojin of complete denial in significant detail, which also made the bone-headed decision of stating outright that this would be their last public statement on the matter, basically calling out anyone who's been pussyfooting around accusations (mainly child actress Seo Shinae) to put up or shut up, and that if Soojin were found to be untruthful about anything, she would leave the group. And then it basically ended "see you in court." The forceful nature of the denial shifted public opinion a bit... for a few days.

But since then, roughly half a dozen accusers have come forward (including SSA) for the "put up" part of her/Cube's challenge, in detail. Since her team's not commenting any more, this stuff is just hanging out there unaddressed, and knetz are absolutely done with Soojin at this point. I honestly don't know what Cube was thinking with this strategy other than of course she's telling the truth and will be completely vindicated in court, because that's what we need to happen. But they're far, far past the point where an apology and hiatus can patch this over. They put all their chips on complete exoneration via the legal system, and that's where it's gonna have to play out at this point.

Idle’s Universe collab song. It’s not bad but it’s definitely the most generic thing you’ll hear from Idle. You can really tell it was just a song written for any group for a collab. The video looks great but they only put up like half of it on YouTube.

Well, that certainly makes it abundantly clear just how much of Idle's musical identity rests squarely on Soyeon's writing/composition/production chops (and now Minnie's and Yuqi's, too).

Next Level is... not good. It honestly plays more like a highlight medley for an upcoming mini album than a cohesive track. I honestly don't know what SM is thinking with aespa. We know the girls can saaaang, why give them rap-heavy title tracks where they can't show off the vocals? Also the fakeout between the preview images styling and what we actually got in the MV was hella disappointing.

That said I'm loving the new Fromis_9 and Rocket Punch tracks. Weeekly and Brave Girls really woke me up to how much I just wanted some pure serotonin feel-good songs after a year of pandemic life, and while I'm still really looking forward to the Pixy and Everglow comebacks, what I really, really want is more bright colors, upbeat sounds, and smiles.
