If he is alive, the scene serves no narrative purpose. I even remember the cinematography: She is doing pottery alone, but then the camera cuts and we see ghost Swayze behind her, his ghostly hands on hers. While the music plays, the camera cuts back and forth between her alone and Swayze guiding her, and it is implied that she senses his presence.
