Did the 1994 AWB enjoy the same level of political support that modern efforts at gun control do? I remember it sunsetting but don't know anything about its formulation.

Personally think instead of banning guns we should have gun socialism. Everyone making under 65k gets a gun.

Lets see how fast it takes for republicans to start wailing about Gun Control.

The only way it got passed was because of the sunset provision, from what I remember.

Well in 89 a gallup poll showed a support of 72% so yes.

It passed as part of a larger crime bill in the 103rd Congress, which saw a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress. It passed the House 235-195 (46 Republicans voted yes, 131 voted no; 188 Democrats voted yes, 64 voted no), but that's for the bill itself. According to Wikipedia the AWB subsection itself passed the Senate 52-48, and only after they built in an expiration date. The bill also included the Violence Against Women Act, so it's difficult to really extract from the voting records how much support the AWB itself had.

And yet the Republicans were able to use it as a key wedge issue for the rest of the 90’s and early 2000s.

Single issue gun voters peeled off enough support for Gore in 2000 that it led to the whole Florida mess.

Keep in mind 89 was when that guy took an AK into a California school and that’s how the import ban and 922(r) comes from. I expect that number might have been tied to that.

Also in expect to hear this from CHUDs on repeat news.

I just don't see someone walking around with that kind of cash at a gun show though. Used to see expensive rear end rifles and class 3 poo poo at gun shows all the time though, so who knows?

Vendors at shows can usually take credit cards.

I had also meant to specify "buy a 249 without a background check at a gunshow"

They could have left that scene on the cutting room floor and been fine. And written a better ending (did the dozens of battle hardened rifle toting terrorists just quietly surrender to the border patrol off camera?) Other than that, good stuff especially the Central Park taxi drive.

Honestly the movie works so well despite Willis and because of Samuel L Jackson and Jermey Irons.

Also for bullshit plot excuse logic. They were in Canada and figured they wouldn’t be extradited to the US due to the death penalty and Canada would be an easy prison run. :v:

Doing some wikipedia calculations I was able to figure about ~130 casualties on average every month during the Troubles. The average population hovers around 4.5 million during that time period. So .03%, equivalently in the US we'd be seeing 99,300 casualties every year or 8275 per month. So a twenty-fifth as bad Troubles would be about 331 casualties every month.

they don't know all alien abduction experiences can be explained by people thinking saving private ryan was a documentary

Back in the 90s almost nobody gave a poo poo about assault weapons. The only people into guns were the old gomer hunters and people who wanted some little handgun for self defense.

The handful of AR15s and magazines floating around became modestly more valuable as pre ban guns, and there were still loopholes for imported guns. I personally sold a shitload of AK47s during the 90s. It wasn't really a law that affected many people or even got a lot of notice in the gun community at the time. Some people still freaked and sold anti-Clinton T shirts at gun shows of course, but it would be a totally different story today. I don't even know anyone who hunts anymore.

They didn't even have anti-tilt magazine followers or light barrels or anything back then, AR15s were just kind of lovely guns.

I had a ban era mini-14 and it shot better than my uncles' AR15 did at the time. Like, '95ish, because I bought it new. There were definitely some poorly built mini-14s at the time though too.
