Diabotical is a 2020 multiplayer-only first-person shooter developed by Swedish team GD Studio. It is in the Arena FPS genre and features gameplay similar to Quake III Arena and its successors, with a variety of game modes, weapons, and complex movement mechanics. I donated to this game in 2014 (pre-Kickstarter days even!) and forgot about it for 4 years, and then one day I got a tube shipped to me from the United Kingdom and oh wow what's this, a Diabotical poster. wtf is Diabotical, and then I had to google it to remember oh yeah this thing. and then on top of it actually getting finished, it's actually really loving good???? it's amazing folks. make 2GD a saint

Really enjoying this game. I have been trying to get my non afps discord friends to give it a shot. I’ve been starting them in instagib, then making them bind the point and click, rockets and shaft and teaching them what guns to use in different situations in arena. Don’t think I have actually gotten anyone to keep playing it without me though  You guys have any tips on how to try to get friends to give it a serious shot?

Anyone seeing hitreg issues? Quite a few complaints about it but it's been fine for me. Remarkably, most players in AU have sub-30ms pings which probably helps mask any issues.

I think this game is really amazing. I had a group of non AFPS friends having the time of their lives playing together in 2v2 arena last night. We eventually decided to tap in to 5v5 quick play. My god we got absolutely destroyed. I wish there were ways to focus on mmr to build new players. The game just wrecks dudes unless they are playing with friends

I was completely ready for this game to be my first full Kickstarter failure after what, 4 years of development. But man, did they deliver. This is probably the best feeling "quakelike" since uhhhh, Q3 and I absolutely love it. On the other hand, I hate it for making me realize how old and bad I am. It's probably not going to be the next Fortnite, but I hope it'll get a sizable enough userbase (and hopefully won't instantly scare away all beginners). See if he likes the map editor? It’s really cool how much you can do within the in-game editor. This game has so many good maps on release, even the time trial maps look and feel good in both physics modes. And if they are able to really leverage community mapping the future is bright.

There's a NA duel tournament today starting 2pm EDT (less than an hour from this post). There are 160 odd participants but QPL players won't be there as today is a QPL match day. Today is BO3 double elimination, tomorrow the top 8 will play a BO5 double elimination tournament as finals. There doesn't appear to be an official stream, which is weird for a test tournament! Hopefully enough streamers can arrange to spectate some good matches. There will be an EU tournament at the end of September, today is NA-only.

It’s mechanically closer to Q3. There are no champions, grenades instead of tribolt. Weeballs sort of replace champion abilities but they’re consumable items either player can pick up. Item times are 25s armor, 35s megahealth so full control is much harder to keep. Duels are 12 minutes long but: 1. the end time is reduced by 30 seconds for each point of score difference 2. The game will not end until one player is in “golden frag” mode and the other player dies. Golden frag starts when there is no more time on the clock, it becomes a sudden death victory for anyone with the most points (so if there’s a tie at 12 minutes both players get “golden frag” status, a player with a one frag lead goes golden at 11:30, a player making a comeback can get it themselves by tying the game up). So there’s always a potential for a comeback if the down player can avoid dying, and stomps are much shorter than close games. Overtime is always sudden death for at least one player. Hit boxes closely conform to the egg on top and are cylinders at the bottom. There are a lot of QoL features like forcing enemy colors, disabling fixed damage numbers, crosshair and HUD customization. Vanity items are either egg stickers (like eyes/nose/mouth or decals) or weapon skins, no weird changes to an enemy’s profile like hats or capes or huge flickering wings. Setting mouse sensitivity and view FOV is beautifully handled by in game converters, you can put in your CS or Overwatch or QC values and it will convert them to the exact equivalent. There’s no walk key but crouch doesn’t slow you as much. The rail gun damage is lower (70) but does more damage with consecutive hits (75, 80... up to 100 after 6 hits). Rockets are predicted client side (up to 120ms!) so instead of QC’s zero damage directs you get bounced atrociously and there’s currently some weirdness when the server does reconciliation over short rockets. There is a dash on a long cool down (4s I think) that is disabled by taking damage. It’s a bit like Warsow dash but only keeps your momentum up to about 600ups. It instantly changes direction and gives a good starting speed. I think circlejumping is identical to Q3 but strafejumping gives a little more air control (much less than CPMA). So it’s much closer to Ranger than Anarki but not quite like either. I can’t watch atm but day 2, a double elim bracket with the top 8 from yesterday, just started. Reybg and davjs were streaming their games yesterday and I imagine will do so again, timconlan was spectating with analysis with d3th after he got eliminated, pressok was also streaming tournament games. Can’t do the twitch links from mobile easily but hopefully these names will be at the top of the diabotical category.
