Hell yeah that's awesome. I'm a huge punk fan and Black Flag has a song called "White Minority" where they are basically mocking the idiot Nazi Skinheads but of course most people didn't get it and labeled Black Flag as racist :v:

Me too, new music is pretty much crap so I find myself going backwards and listening to a lot of old rock and punk.

Especially the early stuff that inspired punk like the Stooges, Johnny Thunders (with and without NY Dolls) etc.

The Who definitely had the punk energy I love them too :)

Whoa now, it's not that new music is crap but more tastes change (or don't) and the stuff getting all the radio play being the generic, non-threatening stuff that's not really interesting. In the past few years I've added so much fan0astict music to my collection, it has been great! You definitely have to go looking to find the good stuff which is why "it's all crap" is such a common opinion to see. I pride myself in hunting out stuff though so I get why not everyone does it.

Well I'm more of a rock/punk/metal fan and to be honest it's all been done, not to much sounds fresh or original these days. There's so much more out there now too and it's hard to find the time for all of it. I try but I've been disappointed for the most part, however there are a few gems out there.

I like Tame Impala a lot, they're probably the newest band (or soloist really) that I've gotten into lately. great stuff.

Punk chat: first concert was NOFX. I listen to a bit of everything, but always gravitate back toward punk.

I've also met Henry Rollins before - he stuck around to chat with people after one of his spoken word shows. Hell of a nice guy with some great stories.

To be fair his supporters don't listen to the lyrics either tho. It's the chorus that counts! Born in the USA! Rockin' in the Free World! MAGA!

Nobody listens to lyrics as long as the chorus clearly mentions “America” or “USA” and has a lot of rock guitars and drums, and the latter is probably the only thing keeping Miley Cyrus’s song from being used at rallies so far.

I'll be honest I did not listen to lyrics very closely when I was a right wing libertarian and was extremely confused when a conservative friend called Rage Against the Machine "a bunch of angry socialists." I actually did not realize that he was right until I was, well, basically an angry socialist.

clearly that was about my parents wanting me to do chores or the government wanting me to pay taxes.

I entirely missed the message of, for example, the first 3/4 of that song, too.

Applebees Appetizer
Jan 23, 2006

Haha, I remember after hearing that song a few times and then listening to the album I was like whoa, these guys are super political, even more than Megadeth who I loved at that time (and still do). Was a huge shift from most of the good time rock n roll stuff going on, Rage came along and the Seattle thing took over and it was so long party rock :v:

Party rock is cool too, it just wore out it's welcome by then there was too much of it.

There was a big to-do earlier this year where a bunch of pro-cop anti-riot people were complaining RATM was "getting political" and someone in PYF came up with "gently caress yeah I'll do what you tell me" :v:

Sorry, but anyone who says that there is very little fresh or original new music is just "old man yells at cloud" in my mind. There is shitloads of great new music coming out all the time :)

I don't know. Some song lyrics are subtle in their meaning and you could miss it but RATM are not in the least bit subtle. I was 12/13 when killing in the name came out and while at that age a lot of it went over my head I don't understand how you could miss the overall gist of it.

Not necessarily rock, but I've been listening to a shitload of podcasts at work from the local NPR music station (KUTX), plus a handful of NPR and several Gimlet Media podcasts.

Heard an interview with a local artist that got my interest, so I caught her ACL Live debut. Jackie Venson is loving amazing - she does everything from blues rock to Stevie Ray Vaughn covers, and live streams multiple times a week on multiple platforms, playing multiple instruments. She was featured on the current season of ACL Live (which airs on PBS) (ignore the encore unless you're into gospel rock, the encore was filmed years ago anyway). She makes that guitar loving WAIL on the SRV cover. She has a Soundcloud.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down is also a new discovery for me - all of the KUTX podcasts have been pushing a local podcast (This Song) that featured an interview with Thao. NPR music station KEXP did a live stream for them as well, though this video was the cover to her/their main track on their latest album. I know this part doesn't matter to most goons, but she also came out publicly as a lesbian (and got married!) when this album dropped, which I think is awesome.

Nope, but to be honest the Sheep Game is very easy to manage in its current form - I have a custom-made program that runs a database of answers, where you can add together and break apart answers into categories and it even spits out the tabulated answers in BBCode format when I need it. About the only attention I need to give it is making sure the entries are in basically the same format as I enter them in. A Google Form would probably help with that, but I haven't looked into it yet because I keep forgetting to
