this sounds like some extremely fallacious "did you know that bus drivers in san francisco make $150,000 a year!!" (a BUS DRIVER shouldn't make as much as someone doing an IMPORTANT JOB) (four bus drivers did, by working 30 hours of overtime a week all year) thing

i'm gonna guess in this case it's the surgeons (or even more speciously, the surgery residents) working out their hourly rate and finding it comes out to less than a crane operator who can't legally work more than a certain number of hours by OSHA regs

norcal crane operators should be easily clearing the pay of residents and fellows though and they count as surgeons. hell they probably do most of the work too

stanford just intensely underpays their surgeons, to the point that they're having problems retaining staff and recruiting people. surgical residents make like $65k, p sure fellows are still under 6.5 figgies, and surgical attendings are way way below market for the area, to the point that they can't afford houses there lol

also people don't realize that crane operation is a Big Deal with a whole lotta liability. they hafta inspect the entire thing every day and document it all. really the head electrician in charge of all the wiring for the new hospital also probably outearns the surgeons by a larger amount

The Management posted:

ask him what experienced tower crane operators make. or is it mobile crane operators? i forget which one is the more liable one, but they get up into 6.5 figgie territory after a few years

a few years back stanford had to start building "low-income housing" ($800k duplexes) for their junior faculty, because the salary for a tenure-track professor at The Most Expensive ∴ The Best University In The World wasn't remotely enough to raise a family in palo alto.

just nuke palo alto imo, that'll fix some poo poo

palo alto is actually kind of a normal looking town with mostly normal houses that sit on land which is inexplicably worth $4 million. palo alto could get a LOT denser with fourplexes and high-rises etc., and yeah the nimbys fight back against that, gently caress them. but there are way worse places in the bay area to nuke first. try atherton, or hillsborough, or los altos hills, or woodside. flatten those, install 50 story soulless concrete apartments

I'm thinking about taking a job in SF, kind of near the financial district. We're a one income family, where should I look for housing? salary is low 200k plus some RSUs that are probably worthless

buy a boat and only pay rent to dock at a "residential" slip

however doing this may require a commute from emeryville, apparently they've significantly limited those slips/leases in sf proper. but it's apparently way more affordable, like trailer park affordable

depends a lot on what kind of lifestyle you are looking for.

whatever it is, you do not want to drive to work in San Francisco. so find somewhere with reasonable access to BART or Caltrain.
