Welcome spooky creatures of the night!!!! The high (un)holy holiday is upon us in a matter of weeks and let’s dance poorly to some Alien Sex Fiend! Talk about the demise of vampirefreaks! Debate if Andrew Eldritch needs to just accept the inevitable!!!

All things goth happily welcomed and embraced: EBM, Industrial, Gothic rock, post punk - if you know, you know. Emo? No. Eno? Yes.

The nice thing about wearing black everything is that it never stains and you never have to sort out the laundry

Ive toyed with the idea of wearing white macquillage and dying my hair black but that is just too much effort to sustain

This is a picture of a goth clown.

And a serious question for all the proper goths: Don't you ever feel like giggling at the silliness of it all? I mean I like The Sisters of Mercy well enough., but all that ponderousness and spoopiness is very very silly.

Coz YAY for all the darkness of the eternal soul business, and I completely understand the "nobody but Morrissey and Joy Division understand me" stuff as I was also once a 15 year old. But it was the self-seriousness that really put me off being a goth proper.

Sorry for being rude.

I was a weekend goth in my 20s because the Venn diagram at uni for goths and roleplayers was a circle, and also because we did better at looking after LGBT people than the actual LGBT society. Then I moved to another city where there wasn't any gothy stuff going on and switched to just having long hair and wearing mostly black clothes, and I kinda miss it.

Relatable

Between the hair/beard, the black clothes, and my twice-a-week gymgoer middlingly burly physique most people assume I am a metalhead but in truth it is the aching, sensitive soul of a Goth that my beating heart sustains

Teens take a lot of things way too seriously man, it's the time of life when your halfbaked brain is a stewing hurricane of poorly regulated hormones and kids cope with that to varying degrees in different ways

My experience of the goths growing up was that they were the ones who were most vocal about the institutions we had to deal with being bullshit though, which is what made me relate to them the most, and willing to put up with bad poetry and self-seriousness

It was a chill hang cuz unlike my older friends back in the dinosaur time when it was easier to sneak into most places underaged - what we did because we were gross lil baby bats.

When I was in high school I wrote for my local newspaper's youth section, and I think the first thing I got published was this op ed about how goths these days aren't real goths. Oh you listen to Marilyn Manson and Nightwish? Poser. London After Midnight? Neo-goth is a joke. You're not a real goth unless you're an 18th century novel, a church from the 12th century, a member of a marauding horde or a fan of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and Sex Game Children (but I bet you've never even heard of them, have you, you prick).

I was such a gatekeeping little poo poo for a few years, glad I grew out of it. I also had a band called The Despairs of Blackman and Woebin which, yes, is where I got this username. We never did much anything and our rehearsal sessions were just hangouts because I was too insecure to sing in front of my own band members.

Anyway The Mountain Goats' "Goths" is the best album of 2017 and possibly the decade and it's about all of us ITT. This track's my favourite.

Best live goth or goth-adjacent act that's still touring? I saw Einstrürzende Neubauten a few years ago and it was probably the best concert I've ever been to. New Model Army is great fun too, whenever I see them I get rescued from the mosh pit by the same big, silent British skinhead.

I was never cool enough to be a goth. And we never really had a goth scene in the podunk village I grew up in anyway. So goths have only really been a thing that existed in media for me.

Sometimes I wonder how life could have been different if only I had had a Hit Topic near where I grew up..

Similar feelings as user Whowhatnow. It's a shame I grew up in a tiny Bavarian village in the 90s, as Goth never really arrived in my reality bubble in a touchable form until I was too old. Welp, all the suppressed frustration with narrowminded village society and Catholicism would have been an excellent base for Goth tendencies :/

Back in like 2003 my band was playing Miami and we decided to go to the beach before meeting with our promoter so we had a bunch of pictures of us all decked out in combat boots and bloused BDUs and stuff standing around posing on a sunny beach. I wanted to use it as the insert photo, but the band mate was adamant about not using them.

That was also the first show we had where someone asked for my autograph. I thought they were making fun of me. My band mate just stared daggers into me when I asked "What? Why?" Also that was the show when some Marine rear end in a top hat got on my case for wearing my uncle's military fatigues.

Was never cool enough to be goth when I could afford it, and now not only am I uncool but it's too expensive for me to have a fashion style. Alas.

Low effort wannabe goth: I'm pretty sure I wore a black t-shirt and jeans for a solid 5 years or so, or something approaching that.

You do you, goths. I'll continue simply being the weird person who keeps animal skulls in her room.

I spent my teenage years looking down on goths for this reason only to become one in my mid 20s when I discovered most of them are pretty chill cool people, goth clubs are low pressure + fun as gently caress, and stomping around in boots to front 242 is a good way to spend a night

Columbine media coverage warping perceptions of the subculture to outsiders didnt help either

It's hard to get the pale skeletal look or take any attempt at it seriously when you have rosy cheeks and look like an overloaded sack in a leather jacket with a mop of hair on top lol.

There's a really good reason I didn't keep any photographs from that period of my life
