i have a bunch of vet students, some just reserve humvee maintenance types and some who actually deployed and probably killed people, and basically all of them don't want to talk about it one way or another. "that part of my life is over and good riddance" more or less. admittedly the ones who did it to get on the GI bill are a different subset from the ones who make it a career.

My brother in law did two tours in Afghanistan and is now permacrocked mentally because of it. The UK military is withholding his passport unless he turns up at the base to collect it but he's too mentally hosed to do so. He's also now missing in Edinburgh and we have no idea where he's gone.

it means someone who will defend any regime that calls itself communist no matter what it does, like the people who think the uyghurs are terrorists that china is humanely reeducating, or that closed elections are okay because the communist party already reflects popular consensus it’s a small number of idiots, but they’re real, and anybody who gets worked up about the term is a lost cause
