That defense was tough and Kentucky had no answer for Seth Williams in the red zone. But Kentucky was also in the game until the 4th quarter fumble and failed fake punt in their own territory that set up two short scores for Auburn. They had two red zone turnovers in the first half that were huge missed opportunities, even if the second one never should have happened because it was clearly a touchdown two plays before. I'm not saying it's a sure thing Kentucky would have won, but it's a different game if they go into halftime with a lead. Also, I truly believe that targeting on the pick six review would not have been called if the refs didn't know they hosed up the touchdown review right before it.

If you're curious about 2020 Bo Nix here's a great breakdown of his performance Saturday from the new Substack launched by the Auburn beat writer who got laid off from the Athletic when they did their covid cuts. My take was I saw exactly what I wanted to see as far as a realistic expectation of improvement -- didn't immediately turn into Joe Burrow but had way better touch, better decisions, used more of the field with some visibly new concepts from Chad Morris, and less often indulged his habit of leaving the pocket too early. There's some clips in there that show some back-foot throws that are like, ok, you'd prefer he wasn't throwing off his back foot but actually they're really good back-foot throws. He was a much better quarterback at home last year so let's see if it falls apart in Athens but if it doesn't, I'm convinced he's making the leap all the QB guru type analysts swore he had in him while everyone whose job is to actually watch college football had good reason to doubt.

It was nice seeing VT actually just be the better team start to finish of a game where it was never really in doubt. I don't know that I can think of feeling that way about a game since maybe 2016. It was nice seeing the Vols are still the Vols and will play with fire in hilarious fashion nearly unable to get out of their own way.
