did they change the thing where holding a candle keeps your head lit, preventing sanity loss?

if they didn't, stand around in the dark room looking for dots but hold a candle next to your head

edit: the game never made this obvious, but the candle is a stakeout tool. once you have everything set up, you grab a candle, light it, and keep it in your hand so you infinite time to watch for ghost events and listen for specific behavior, if you were good about managing your sanity loss during setup

Supposedly, the candles now just slow your sanity loss instead of completely preventing it, though I can't completely confirm that since I haven't unlocked all the equipment tiers yet. A lot of equipment and evidence properties have anywhere from minor to major adjustments. For example, take Ultraviolet (formerly fingerprints). The basic evidence is still the same, but now the glowing footprints from salt behave the same as fingerprints and count as evidence. Also, you can't just take a picture where the print should be now and have it count, you actually have to expose it to UV light for several seconds so it stays visible long enough for you to take the photo.

This update is pretty cool, definitely puts a fresh spin on the game with the balance changes, equipment tiers and prestige system. Of course there are a bunch of bugs, it wouldn't be a Phasmo update without a bunch of bugs and constant patches for a week or two, but that's par for the course. I'm still looking forward to the console update later this month, I really want to try this on PSVR2.

I like that once you've played with your group for a few hours, you emerge with a pretty efficient workflow.

Everyone grabs a flashlight.
One guy takes dots and polaroid and starts looking for evidence.
Another takes uv and emf and takes samples wherever something occurs.
The third listens for sounds, or walks through the house with a video cam.

Once the ghost room is located we basically dump the entire truck into the house, kit it out with mics, motion sensors, establish escape routes and what not. Guy in the truck coordinates, guys in the house take evidence and photos.

It feels really, really good to find your groove. Especially if two people can directly work together. Like one has the camera, the other the uv light. Or the guys in the house setting up dots and cameras so the truck guy can observe efficiently.

I play in public lobbies a lot, and it's always interesting to see what people initially take into the map. A lot of people have things figured out. If I'm playing with a decent group, I'll try to grab a thermo or EMF and then wait and see what good gear hasn't been taken. But there's still a lot of people who will grab a lighter, smudge, and crucifix, and then confidentially tell me to grab salt and as many motion sensors as I can carry. Those games are actually a lot of fun, because those people get spooked the most

Tier 3 firelight is the lantern, it doesn't burn down (can be blown out) but also illuminates a small room with reliable light.

Possible bug with it though, I heard it has collision with things like smudge sticks, so if you accidentally wave a stick through the Lantern it'll accidentally ignite lol

I'm finding voice recognition with cursed possessions kinda wonky though. In the past, Ouija Board and Monkeys Paw responded to be in a relatively snappy fashion. Now it seems to have to say things a bunch of times, and then the oujia board just blows up on me.

Is player and the office guy's voice really quiet for anyone else? I have my friend's voice slider up to 100% but can barely hear her and when loading into the truck the office guy's announcement is hardly audible. I have to put my windows sounds loudness equalization on to help hear more, but then that messes up other game audio levels understandably. I'm not seeing any mention of it elsewhere.

I've done some "No Evidence" runs now (10x on Tanglewood) and I kind of see the appeal of this "hardcore all-or-nothing" sort of gameplay, but it feels kind of a bummer to have all this cool equipment that serves no real purpose besides secondary objectives.

I joined a public lobby where people were using this strat. I played with them for a while and got a decent amount of levels. I also contributed by taking pictures each round. Been playing with my group again with the big equipment update and it's been pretty fun, though we had to go back to Intermediate from previously being All Professional, and even then we keep having some casualties.

Slowly going up the levels, and I appreciate just how bad the early starting equipment is and that it takes a bit to unlock some of the stuff we got used to. Not even having the crucifix available made some of the early game feel pretty dangerous, and made it feel noticable when we finally got those back. Speaking of crucifixes, we hadn't played since they added animations for them breaking and the "Oh poo poo" feeling when you hear the burning noise or the radio call of "Crucifix down! Crucifix down!" is pretty fun.

New Asylum map has been neat, though so far we mostly played on the small versions. First impression that stuck was going down the hallway with a buddy, finding a room full of blood and while I was busy going "Yo, check out the Blood Room" the EMF goes off in it. A few moment later a hunt starts and the ghost kills me. Do not mess around with the Blood Room.

The super small camp is deadly as hell. We occasionally go in trying to make this the run where no one dies, but have yet to succeed.

So far our biggest challenge is actually surviving a hunt. Not sure if we are just terrible or unlucky but it feels like whenever one starts we never manage to make it out of there before the ghost is chasing someone and catches them inevitably. We've started having someone with a Safety Smudge around when our sanity gets low, but so far it mostly resulted in the person with the smudge using it at the start of a hunt and running out of there scared while someone else who was closer to the ghost gets caught :v:

Overall been enjoying the latest update a lot. Though I cannot wait to finally have tier 2 flash lights, the basic ones barely light up anything.

If you want to grind upward you can do 10x on Tanglewood which is my favorite. I like it more than Woodwind because you still get to play the game a bit instead of just meandering around in the darkness of Woodwind.

It's similar to that Woodwind setting except the breaker is On and sprinting is On. Your multiplier is like 10x instead of 12x but it's honestly still a crapton of xp if you succeed.

You run into the house turning on all the lights on the way into the kitchen, and then make your stand there. Primarily loop the ghost around the kitchen table. Breaker box is either in the garage or basement. Plenty of doors and stuff for ghosts to interact with.

If someone can bring a lantern, one lantern basically illuminates the whole kitchen so you can still loop in the darkness. Be sure to bring salt and a photo camera and load up your photo book for even more money.

Unrelated to the grind set, sound sensors are so dope now. You can listen for ghost writing and ghost foot speed in the van now. You're no longer useless if you get locked outside the house! And it's much easier to not miss a beat when using sound sensors to narrow down big maps.

The Tier 3 sound sensors are directional too. You can right click to change the microphone direction before placing it on the ground. (Circle, 90 degrees in a direction, or like 45 degrees front and back)

And in the van, you can interact with the sound sensor screen to boost the mic gain (increase/decrease the area of coverage)

I am laughably useless when the ghost starts hunting unexpectedly. I just completely poo poo the bed and enter a blind panic as I lunge for the nearest hiding spot while throwing all my electronics away, because:
1) I'm usually the designated "van babby"* once we confirm the ghost room; I rush the camera and DOTS into place, lob a crucifix or two down in the general vicinity then sod off to where I can keep track of the average sanity and monitor cameras/sensors.
2) I never seem to have Smudge Sticks or whatever on me when the ghost springs into action while I'm in the 'hunt zone', and because I am an idiot that sprints around the map at every moment, this means I am almost guaranteed to be left with no stamina to even begin running away when the ghost shows up.

I also have some unbelievably loving terrible luck. If the ghost manifests for any reason when I'm near the ghost room, said manifestation is almost invariably right behind me, either utterly tanking my own sanity or killing me outright. I swear to Christ there was one instance where a Demon initiated a hunt with its bullshit ability and it practically fell out of my loving rear end; the lights flickered and the "death hands" were immediately on my screen before I could acknowledge a ghost was even present, never mind hunting.

And then we have Cursed Items. The one time I used a Voodoo Doll, it was the heart pin; cue the Cursed Hunt, and cue the ghost making a casual uninterrupted beeline for me. Even after ditching my electronic stuff and hot-footing it from the front door to the basement, the loving thing (a Hantu, FWIW) still closed in on my hiding spot, all the way from the kid's room upstairs to my lovely basement corner, with absolutely zero effort and I had no way to outrun or distract it at all.

The only Cursed Item that I use now is the Haunted Mirror, and even then I stand by the front door before doing so. This game hates me :buddy:

*As a result it's mostly all my equipment being used, making any given death double-painful for me, which in part actually leads to my panic :smith:

It's probably tied with the T1 DOTS for most janky piece of equipment. I think I read somewhere that the T1 Spirit Box has like a 3m radius or some poo poo like that. So you need to keep trying it or something.

Also I think something changed with voice recog in this update. The oujia board used to respond to my questions very quickly, but now there's a bit of a delay before it starts responding. Makes me nervous that it didn't hear me and I'm just waiting for the oujia board to break.

edit: I went into the game's store and the T1 spirit box description is range 3m, response rate: low. So yeah it's just rear end and you need to keep trying it.

Every single time a hunt-related bonus objective appears for a contract, I mouse around looking at my group and say "I'm not doing that". The only dangerous one I take part in is the 'prevent a hunt with the Crucifix', and even then I often get cold feet depending on map/ghost type.

For reference, we're packing Tier III equipment for most of our loadout now. Even with all that, I will frequently chicken out. Why?

For the T1 spirit box you really have to get into the ghosts face. I think the radius is 3m or so, and the ghost keeps moving all the time.

The T1 dots aren't half bad actually. It's more subtle than the T2 one. But you'll see someone moving through them regardless. And you can use them as improvised flashlights. And by placing 2 of them you can fill the entire field of view of a camcorder, so for the guy in the van it doesn't make a difference.

The T1 thermometer is actually significantly better than the T2 one in my opinion. And we keep one of the T1 glow sticks in our load out permanently.

T1 Spirit Box is trash and those times when you're stuck between getting evidence from that or the lovely T1 EMF Reader (which can sometimes give a false reading of EMF 5 for a second or so when the needle swings around) is loving horrible. T1 DOTS was some awful poo poo at first, but within a day they were hotfixed to be placeable which made them a hell of a lot more useful.

I wouldn't be surprised if they patch the tier 3 thermo, and maybe even the tier 2, to just be getting readings all the time like thermos were before the patch. Having to hold down the button each time you want a reading is such a downgrade, especially since you now need it to confirm freezing temps

They changed it to a button so that players would know the current reading because I guess the old version was hard to read. (It used to update every like 2 seconds but I guess peeps couldn't tell if it was a current reading or not?)

A lot of pubs seem to think it's freezing evidence when the t1 thermo hits zero C, though I think that'll smooth out as more people get to spend time with the game.

That's the thing, the T1 deliberately doesn't hit 0C because that's ambiguous, it either gets stuck at ~1, or goes well below the zero line. Devs must have anticipated the confusion on reddit et al.

The T1 spirit box and writing book are notably less reliable then the T2 (old default) versions, but those are the only two I'd say you'd do well to upgrade asap. Crucifix, salt and the flashlight would be the next upgrade priorities IMO.

Either there's a new bug (probably) or the devs are very sneakily trying out a "no ghost" option. I was doing the weekly challenge mode last night and one of the runs I literally could not find any signs of the ghost after 20 minutes of looking. The challenge mode has actually looped back around to being the very first challenge this week, which if you aren't aware, is a very hard one in Prison with no sanity, no smudge sticks, sanity medicine does nothing, breaker is broken, van boards are broken, 125% speed only T1 equipment. You're basically getting perma-hunted, so even in a map the size of Prison, there's absolutely no way you wouldn't find the ghost after going around the entire place multiple times. I eventually just left and guessed (incorrectly), then I check the stats and supposedly there was indeed a ghost hunting and interacting non-stop. I saw at least one other person reported this happening on the discord, too.
