Maybe it records your voice temporarily and plays back the recording sometimes when you're dead.

I like that you don't have to go back into the house to get equipment you left, but that'd be a fun optional difficulty modifier.

As much as people deride the person who sits in the van I do think it should be an integral part of the game. Maybe they need to work with the person in the breaker room to get the lights back on, or sort through noise on recorded audio to actually hear the ghost responding to the spirit box. More asymmetrical gameplay like that would be great.
