RE: Cutting people out of your life.

Been doing an awful lot of that lately, I've just kinda reached a point where I have zero-tolerance for stressors in my life and the ones that are people* can go gently caress right off.

*Except immediate family, still trying to muster the courage for that.

My wife and I have been having some rough conversations about cutting off her incredibly racist extended family. She can't bring herself to do it since both her parents have already died and she's unable to deal with the emotional baggage of kicking them out of our lives. I just had to step my entire position back to avoid a full blown fight the other night but we can't tip toe around it much longer.

I know this, she does not. She's never had to excise a poo poo family member before, let alone 7 of them all at once. For now the compromise is i dont have to go see them and they are not welcome in my house.

Last year was the first year we were in a house in a neighborhood with lots of kids, so we gave out candy for Halloween. This year, with Covid and all, it's obviously not going to be the same. Anyone has ideas for how to execute this year?

Wear gloves and a mask under a halloween mask, you drop candy directly into the kid's bags/pails.

My dad was convinced Trump told the proud boys to "stand down" because his conservative news source told him so. I had to play the actual video for him and he looked shell shocked.

Just to be clear, my father did not abuse me. He did on occasion spank me but I was a rotten kid at times and it was a punishment, he never hit me for no reason or out of rage when I was a child. I was assaulted and abused by my classmates over sharing a name with a famous person with AIDS. I believe I've shared the story here before.

So I am FB friends with a guy at work who tested positive 2 weeks ago. I found out tonight he's spent the last week at a casino a bit south of here. So he totally broke quarantine and is set to return to work tomorrow night. I'm pretty pissed off by his total lack of concern for other people. Part of me wants to rat him out but I don't know if there will be any actual ramifications.

I just wish we hadn't lost touch.

I'm shamelessly stealing what a mutual friend wrote about Curtis because I am no good with words and this guy was his best friend.

quote:

Heaven is a little brighter, but the world is a little darker with the loss of one of the brightest lights I knew. My friend Curtis passed away yesterday. I use the term friend to keep things simple, because Curt was so much more than just a friend.
As my roommate for over 12 years, he grew to be more like a 2nd brother to me. The only people I have spent more time with would be my parents and my brother.
One of the big roles he had was that of a gamer. Be it a card game, board game, dice game, RPG, video game or computer game, Curt was ready to game. And it was never about winning with Curt. For him it was having fun with those at the table. I remember early on when I was asked to help demo the Star Wars Miniatures game at Books Comics and Things, I talked Curt into helping because I knew he would be better at getting people interested. Books sold out of all the Star Wars minis that day because every person who sat down to learn from Curt had so much fun, how could you not want to have this game. None of the other demos came close.
Moving to another of Curt’s facets... entertainment. He knew movies and TV shows, and of course Anime, even though I never got into that. Curt could spend a little time with you and would be able to recommend something for you to check out. Nine out of ten times, he would be spot on.
Let's look at sports. Many times we would flip over to catch the Reds on TV. Curt would always pull for them, win or lose. He was never just a fair weather fan. And right now I feel I may need to pull for his Islander’s who still have a shot at the Stanley Cup. And we’re just shy of Curt’s favorite time of the year… NFL Football. Die hard Colt’s fan, and still pulling for his childhood team, the Bengals, unless it was against the Colt’s. Going out to the various bars/restaurants over the years with friends, and more recently sticking at Buffalo Wild Wings with his family and other football friends was a Sunday staple for so long. Things were going to be different this year anyway due to all the social distancing and safeguards, but now things will never be the same.
Heroic and calm under pressure. We had a dryer fire in the house once. I was a wreck, totally freaking out, trying to figure out what to do. Curt simply grabbed a phone to call 911. Got that ball rolling and then went to work trying to get me to calm down. “Help is coming Bret. Why don’t you go move your car to make it easier for the Fire Department to have access?” How much room they would need, who knows. Curt gave me something to do, to change my focus. Somehow he knew what would help me at that moment and made it happen.
Humor. Curt always had something to share to make you laugh. Be it a YouTube video to share, a one-liner that would fit the situation, or one of the many inside jokes he had with different groups of friends, Curt could bring the smile to you face. And somehow he always knew when you needed that smile, and gave it to you at just the right moment.
There are still so many words to help describe Curt… loyal, reliable, patient, joyful, peaceful, kind, caring, and many more.
For those of you lucky enough to have known Curtis, I believe you would agree that I have barely scratched the surface of all the wonderful ways in which he made our lives so much brighter. For those of you who never got the opportunity to get to know Curt, as heartbroken as I am for the loss of this shining beacon of a man, I feel for you that your lives weren’t made better through knowing him.
Curtis, my friend, my brother, thank you for making my life a whole lot better. I miss you so much already, but I take comfort in knowing that someday, God will decide it is my time to take a seat at your heavenly game table, and we will meet again.

Came home this morning around 4, milled around for a few minutes, and just before I went to bed I find a bat flying back and forth across my living/dining room. Scared the poo poo out of me. Fortunately I have vaulted ceilings so it wasn't down in my face but I still bolted out of the room. It kind of followed me, then went back in to the other rooms, then swooped at me, then back, etc. Finally I opened the back door and stood there hoping to see it fly out, when I heard my dad opening his bedroom door. I skulked over to tell him we have a loving bat in the house, but suddenly there was no sign of it. I looked around for an hour while he ate breakfast, after which we concluded that it must have flown out, and I just missed it. It was silent and quick as hell. So I slept for 3 hours, got up to pee, and now my adrenaline's back up because I'm still worried that it's here somewhere and is gonna swoop me again. Also worried that there's some secret bat hole that he can get in and out of, with his bat friends or family. We shall see.

Or my dad is :drac:

I am at a brilliantly socially distanced wedding. Almost everyone was masked up and the tables are far apart, all the booze is single serving, the food is individual meals in cartons. Such good planning and only a few people have left their masks off. I didn't want to attend but it's family so I pocketed extra masks and sanitizer and it's been wonderful.

We have a fuckstick that open carries at cars and coffee and he is very confrontational. He heard someone making Mustang Driver jokes so he confronted the dude and when the joke maker refused to back down our resident fuckstick rested his hand on his gun. The entire mood changed immediately.
